    Abstract Quantifying the spatial organization of human settlements is fundamental to understanding the complexity of urban systems. However, the quantitative patterns of the distribution of villages, towns, and cities that lie between random and regular, are still largely unknown. Here, by analyzing the geographic location of settlements in diverse regions, we show that the apparently complex urban systems can be characterized by disordered hyperuniformity (with small density fluctuations), an intriguing pattern that has been identified in many physical and biological systems, but has rarely been documented in socio-economic systems. By introducing the mechanisms of spatial matching and competition, we develop a growth model that shows how settlements evolve towards hyperuniformity. Our model also predicts the heavy-tail population distribution across settlements, in agreement with empirical observations. These results provide insights into the self-organization of cities, and reveal the universality of spatial organization shared by social, physical, and biological systems.

    Abstract Intergenerational integration has given rise to a novel aging paradigm known as all-age communities, which is garnering international attention. In China, the aging population and the implementation of the three-child policy have resulted in increased demand for retirement and childcare services among residents in older neighborhoods. Consequently, there is a pressing need to retrofit these older neighborhoods to accommodate all-age living arrangements given the high demand they generate. Therefore, this study undertakes research interviews with residents and constructs an exploratory theoretical model rooted in established theory. To assess the significance of our model, we employ Smart PLS 3.0 based on 297 empirical data points. Our findings indicate that anxiety has a significant negative effect on payment behavior; objective perception, willingness to pay, and government assistance exert significant positive effects on payment behavior. By comprehensively analyzing the mechanisms underlying residents' payment behavior, this study provides valuable insights for the government for promoting the aging process within communities and formulating effective transformation policies.

    Abstract Background: The vast majority of systemic lupus erythematosus patients develop lupus nephritis (LN) with severe renal manifestations, such as inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. The purpose of this research was to investigate Cordyceps cicadae as a potential therapeutic target for treating inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in LN.
    Methods: The effects of C. cicadae on lupus symptoms in mice with LN were determined. MRL/lpr mice were treated with C. cicadae (4 g/kg/day, i.e., CC group, n = 8) or an equal volume of saline (model group, n = 8), and MRL/MP mice were treated with an equal volume of saline (control group, n = 8). Renal function indices, renal pathology, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress markers, and renal interstitial fibrosis levels were evaluated after C. cicadae treatment. Western blot analysis was performed to investigate the effect of C. cicadae on the expression of fibrosis biomarkers and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-mediated autophagy pathway in the renal tissues of mice.
    Results: C. cicadae ameliorated renal lesions, the inflammatory response, and oxidative stress damage in MRL/lpr mice. C. cicadae treatment inhibited renal fibrosis (16.31 ± 4.16 vs. 31.25 ± 5.61) and downregulated the expression of the fibrosis biomarkers alpha-smooth muscle actin, fibronectin, and collagen I (COL I) in the kidneys of MRL/lpr mice. In addition, further research showed that the PI3K/mTOR-mediated autophagy pathway was involved in C. cicadae-mediated effects on renal fibrosis in MRL/lpr mice. Furthermore, the therapeutic effect of C. cicadae on repairing renal fibrosis and damage in MRL/lpr mice was abolished by the PI3K agonist 740 Y-P.
    Conclusions: The findings of the present research showed that C. cicadae could alleviate inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in the renal tissues of mice with LN by targeting the PI3K/mTOR-mediated autophagy pathway.

    Abstract Purpose: This study aims to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting the risk of bloodstream infections (BSI) in critically ill patients based on their admission status to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
    Patients and methods: Patients' data were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database (training set), the Beijing Friendship Hospital (BFH) database (validation set) and the eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) (validation set). Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the influencing factors, and lasso regression was used to select the predictive factors. Model performance was assessed using area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and Presented as a Nomogram. Various aspects of the established predictive nomogram were evaluated, including discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility.
    Results: The model dataset consisted of 14930 patients (1444 BSI patients) from the MIMIC-IV database, divided into the training and internal validation datasets in a 7:3 ratio. The eICU dataset included 2100 patients (100 with BSI) as the eICU validation dataset, and the BFH dataset included 419 patients (21 with BSI) as the BFH validation dataset. The nomogram was constructed based on Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), sepsis related organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, white blood cell (WBC), red width of distribution (RDW), renal replacement therapy and presence of liver disease on their admission status to the ICU. The AUROCs were 0.83 (CI 95%:0.81-0.84) in the training dataset, 0.88 (CI 95%:0.88-0.96) in the BFH validation dataset, and 0.75 (95%CI 0.70-0.79) in the eICU validation dataset. The clinical effect curve and decision curve showed that most areas of the decision curve of this model were greater than 0, indicating that this model has a certain clinical effectiveness.
    Conclusion: The nomogram developed in this study provides a valuable tool for clinicians and nurses to assess individual risk, enabling them to identify patients at a high risk of bloodstream infections in the ICU.

    Abstract Background and objectives: Chest pain is a relatively long-term symptom that commonly occurs in patients who have contracted COVID-19. The reasons for these symptoms remain unclear, with coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) emerging as a potential factor. This study aimed to assess the presence of CMD in these patients by measuring the angio-derived index of microcirculatory resistance (AMR).
    Methods: In this cross-sectional case-control study, patients who had chest pain and a history of COVID-19 infection within the preceding 30 to 60 days were included. The control subjects were patients without COVID-19. Demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic data were recorded. Angiographic images were collected for AMR analysis through an angioplus quantitative flow ratio measurement system. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to match the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between COVID-19 incidence and the increase in AMR (AMR > 285 mmHg*s/m) after correction for other confounders.
    Results: After PSM, there were 58 patients in each group (the mean age was 66.3 ± 9.04 years, and 55.2% were men). The average time between the onset of COVID-19 infection and patient presentation at the hospital for coronary angiography was 41 ± 9.5 days. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the quantitative flow ratio between the two groups. Patients with COVID-19 had a greater mean AMR (295 vs. 266, p = 0.002). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that COVID-19 (OR = 3.32, 95% CI = 1.50-7.60, p = 0.004) was significantly associated with an increase in AMR.
    Conclusions: Long-term COVID-19 patients who experience chest pain without evidence of myocardial ischemia exhibit an increase in AMR, and CMD may be one of the reasons for this increase. COVID-19 is an independent risk factor for an increase in AMR.

    Abstract The traditional bus bay stops are prone to ponding, with reduced waiting comfort, low traffic efficiency and easily damaged pavement structure. Given the problem, based on the sponge design of the bay stop in northern China, the rainstorm flood management model under the traditional and sponge modes is constructed, and the runoff condition of the bus stop is analyzed. The results show that the combination design of LID facilities, such as permeable pavement and the recessed green belt has a good control effect on rainwater runoff in the stop section. The larger the range of LID measures adopted in the stop section, the more pronounced the runoff control effect. The combined design of sponge facilities can effectively control rainwater runoff. However, with the increase in rainfall intensity, the control effect of sponge measures on rainwater runoff at the bus stop gradually decreases.

    Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) have recently emerged as a new method for engineering the response of open physical systems, that is, systems that interact with the environment. The systems at the EPs exhibit a strong response to a small perturbation. Here, we show a method by which the sensitivity of silicon resonant sensors can be enhanced when operated at EPs. In our experiments, we use a pair of mechanically coupled silicon micromechanical resonators constituting a parity-time (PT)-symmetric dimer. Small perturbations introduced on the mechanically coupled spring cause the frequency to split from the EPs into the PT-symmetric regime without broadening the two spectrum linewidths, and this frequency splitting scales with the square root of the perturbation strength. The overall signal-to-noise ratio is still greatly enhanced, although the measured noise spectral density of the EP sensing scheme has a slight increase comparable to the traditional counterpart. Our results pave the way for resonant sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity.
