Abstract Introduction/Objective. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with increased fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. The study objective was to investigate the correlation of maternal blood biochemical markers routinely determined in the first and second trimester screening and ultrasound fetal surveillance parameters in the prediction of fetal growth and condition in singleton pregnancies. Methods. In the first trimester we measured serum levels of beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (βHCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A). In the second trimester we measured values of chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), alpha fetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated estriol (E3) and inhibin A, also examined ultrasonographic biometric fetal parameters, amniotic fluid index (AFI) and Doppler resistance indexes. FGR was defined as ultrasonographically determined fetal weight and growth parameters below the 10th percentile for the gestational age. Obtained biochemical and ultrasonographic parameters were correlated. Results. Study included 104 singleton pregnancies. βHCG in the first trimester correlated negatively with fetal growth in the second and third trimester, and the second trimester AFI. Increased PAPP-A correlated positively with elevated resistance index in medial cerebral artery, lower biophysical profile scores, and intermediate type of non-stress test. Lower values of E3 were associated with FGR. Elevated serum AFP levels were linked to oligoamnion in the third trimester. There was no correlation of inhibin A levels with fetal condition. Conclusion. First and second trimester biochemical markers of pregnancy (βHCG, PAPP-A, HCG, AFP and E3) in combination with ultrasonographic biophysical parameters of fetus have predictive value for fetal growth and development.

Abstract Introduction. Spontaneous bilateral ectopic pregnancy is a rare condition easily overlooked or misdiagnosed. We present a case of spontaneous bilateral tubal ectopic pregnancy and discuss the difficulties in diagnosing and treating such patients. Case outline. A 39-years-old patient with a history of irregular and abundant menstrual cycles complained of pelvic pain and light bleeding after 55 days of amenorrhea. Ultrasound revealed enlarged uterus with a myoma and a heterogenic formation with echogenic ring sign beside the left ovary. Free fluid with clots was present in the pelvis. As the patient was hemodynamically unstable and ectopic pregnancy was suspected, emergency laparotomy was performed. During the surgery we found that both tubes were significantly edematous, dilated, and livid in their ampullary regions. On the left tube anterior wall rupture 15 × 8 mm was noticeable, while right tube was intact with bleeding from its abdominal ostium. Even though the patient was not informed about the possibility of bilateral salpingectomy, after thorough consideration and due to the extent of tubal damage bilateral salpingectomy was eventually performed. Histopathological analysis confirmed the presence of decidua, partially viable and partially necrotic chorionic villi, and trophoblastic tissue in both right and left tubes. Conclusions. Careful preoperative and intraoperative examination of both Fallopian tubes as well as the whole abdominal and pelvic cavity should be mandatory during every assessment of patients with ectopic pregnancy.

Abstract To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with a high-risk skin melanoma after completion of the primary surgical treatment over time, as well as, to identify factors associated with better HRQoL at the beginning and at the end of follow-up. The study included subjects with histopathologically confirmed high-risk skin melanoma in clinical stages IIC, IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC, in whom clinical and radiographic signs of the disease were not confirmed after primary surgical treatment. The HRQoL was evaluated using Short Form-36 (SF-36) after completion of primary surgical treatment (start of follow-up) and after 6 to 12 months (end of follow-up). A total of 71 people completed SF-36 at both points in time. There were no significant differences between the initial and the follow-up total HRQoL score (t = 1.118; p = 0.267). At the start of follow-up, having fewer depressive symptoms, better functional status and lower vitamin D serum levels were associated with a better total HRQoL score. At the end of follow-up, having lower Breslow depth and being employed at the start of follow-up, having fewer depressive symptoms and lower C-reactive protein (CRP) serum levels at follow-up, and not developing metastases over follow-up were associated with a higher total HRQoL scores. The HRQoL of people with high-risk melanoma did not change in the year following the complete removal of the tumor. However, presence of depressive symptoms and metastases seem to have the strongest impact on poorer quality of life after surgery.

Abstract Objective: The relationship between smoking and onset of glaucoma has been inconsistent. However, there is a gap in understanding whether tobacco smoking is linked to a worse visual impairment in different glaucoma subtypes. The objective of this study was to examine the association between smoking behavior and vision-related disability in people who have different glaucoma subtypes.
Methods: A total of 283 people with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and pseudo-exfoliative (PEX) were included in this cross-sectional study. The recruitment of study participants was organized in one of two tertiary centers for eye diseases in Belgrade, Serbia, during their regular eye checks. Information about the duration and quantity of smoking was self-reported. Vision-related impairment was quantified using a validated Glaucoma Quality of Life-15 (GQL-15) questionnaire.
Results: A series of multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, gender, severity of glaucoma, lifestyle, and mobility, intraocular pressure level, visual parameters, previous and current therapy, and chronic illnesses suggested that a higher quantity of cigarettes smoked per day was associated with poorer vision-related quality of life only among people with NTG subtypes. This association was absent when smoking duration was tested in the adjusted linear regression model.
Conclusion: A higher number of cigarettes smoked daily was associated with poorer vision-related impairment among people who have NTG, but not other glaucoma subtypes. It is recommended that ophthalmologists and other health-care professionals work to improve their patients' understanding of harmful effects of tobacco smoke and quit smoking.

Abstract Evidence about the association of quantity of cigarettes smoked and duration of smoking with quality of life in menopause is sparse. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between smoking patterns and menopause-specific quality of life. This cross-sectional study included 513 consecutive midlife women at two primary health care centers in Belgrade, Serbia. Collection of data was carried out from February 2014 to January 2015, using three questionnaires: socio-epidemiologic questionnaire, Menopause-specific Quality of Life questionnaire (MENQOL) and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI). Women reported their smoking status (smoker, former smoker, non-smoker), the length of time spent smoking and quantity of cigarettes smoked per day. There was no difference in proportions of ever smokers compared to never smokers. However, there were more women who were current nonsmokers than current smokers. A linear regression model, adjusted for residency district, relationship status, educational level, employment, drinking alcohol, having exercise, age and BDI, showed that longer duration of smoking, but not number of cigarettes smoked per day, was associated with worse Physical domain and total MENQOL score. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis showed that menopausal symptoms as measured by total MENQOL score were significantly less bothersome for women who smoked less than 10 years and significantly more intense in women who smoked 21 to 30 years. Midlife women should be encouraged to quit smoking as soon as possible, preferably before menopause. Strategies to prevent and quit smoking should be prioritized at all levels of health care delivery for women.Supplemental data for this article is available online at.

Abstract Populations affected by war may experience food insecurity, which could predispose them to eating disorders. A cross-sectional study was conducted among health sciences students in Northern Kosovo from November 2018 to March 2019. Data were collected using the sociodemographic Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The study sample comprised 534 students. The prevalence of students who had at least mild depression (BDI ≥ 10) was 20.6%. More frequent night eating was consistently associated with a higher EDI score in the total sample as well as in the subgroup of students whose EDI score was ≥ 10. In addition, having poorer sleep quality and having more anxiety symptoms were associated with having stronger depressive symptoms. In a population of health sciences students who live in a post-conflict region, night eating is associated with having stronger depressive symptoms.

Abstract Introduction/Objective. As of recently, an increasing number of premenopausal women is being diagnosed with endometrial carcinomas. The objective of our study was to determine if routinely collected clinical and imaging parameters, implying on tumor characteristics, are different in pre- and postmenopausal endometrial carcinoma patients, enabling their appropriate preoperative evaluation. Methods. The study included all patients (n = 209) operated on due to endometrial carcinoma over a period of three years. The diagnosis was based on histopathological findings of exploratory curettage. Medical history was taken for all the patients and they were divided regarding menopausal status. On preoperative ultrasound scan, the endometrial echo pattern was established. The existence of myomas, adnexal masses, free fluid in the abdomen or uterine cavity was noted. Magnetic resonance imaging detected the presence of pelvic metastases and tumor spreading into the uterine cavity, myometrium, cervix, and lymph nodes. Postoperatively, histopathological findings, the tumor stage and grade were established. Results. The majority of women were postmenopausal and secundiparous. Significantly more patients were obese, especially the postmenopausal ones (p = 0.001). Most tumors were endometrioid adenocarcinomas regardless of menopausal status. Irregular/abnormal bleeding (p = 0.037), presence of ascites (p = 0.010), obesity (p = 0.046), and lower parity (p = 0.016) correlated with postmenopausal status. Large exophytic endometrial carcinomas were predominant in younger patients (p = 0.026). Endometrial carcinomas were significantly more often diagnosed in the II FIGO stage in premenopausal patients. There were no other significant differences (endometrial thickness, uterine homogeneity, echogenicity, tumor infiltration and spreading, histopathological type and grade) between pre- and postmenopausal endometrial carcinoma patients. Conclusions. Few differences between pre- and postmenopausal endometrial carcinoma patients existed and ...

Abstract Background/Aim: Congenital malformations still represent one of the most important causes of prenatal and infant death. The study goal was to analyze occurrence and outcomes of different types of congenital anomalies from the tertiary referral center during a ten-year period. Moreover, study aimed at examining potential predictors of congenital anomalies based on patients’ characteristics and medical history data. Methods: Study included all pregnant women directed to Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Center of Serbia due to prenatally diagnosed congenital fetal anomalies during past ten years. Upon admission to our clinic a detailed general medical and obstetrical history were taken from every patient. All women underwent genetic testing. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance were diagnostic methods for fetal malformations confirmation. Results: Study included 773 pregnant women aged from 18 to 46 years. Out of registered nine different groups of fetal anomalies/malformations, the most common were malformations of the central nervous system, while majority of fetuses had combined multiple anomalies. Genetic cause for congenital anomalies was present in 25.2% of pregnancies. Medical pregnancy abortion was performed in 71.8% of cases. Only 10.2% of pregnancies ended in term. The best outcome for children was obtained in case of gastrointestinal anomalies (52% live-born). Contrary only one child with neck and thorax malformations could be saved. According to logistic regression the most important predictor of having a child with combined multiple anomalies was mother’s age, while predictor of central nervous system anomalies was gestational diabetes. The significant predictor of genetic anomalies was mother’s age. Conclusion: In our sample neurological congenital anomalies were the most common, although abnormalities of all organ systems were registered. Majority of pregnancies had to be discontinued due to combined multiple anomalies caused by genetic disorders. Older mother’s age and diabetes can ...

Abstract The 60-item HEXACO (HEXACO-60) Personality Trait Inventory may be strategically more important for researchers compared to the 100-item HEXACO. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the 60-item HEXACO questionnaire in the Serbian language. This cross-sectional study, conducted at three of five Faculties of Medicine during the summer semester of the 2016/2017 academic year, included 617 students. Relevant data were collected by an anonymous questionnaire. Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω coefficients for the total scale were .71 and .72, respectively. Apart from Agreeableness, all other domains showed an adequate level of internal consistency (both Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω coefficients were >.70). Random data eigenvalues obtained on the parallel analysis had higher values than initial exploratory factor analysis eigenvalues up to the sixth factor. Accordingly, it was concluded that six factors should be extracted from the Serbian HEXACO-60. These factors corresponded in item distribution with the original ones. Based on the confirmatory factor analysis, using both 60 items and 24 facets, overall goodness of fit of the Serbian HEXACO-60 was acceptable. Moreover, there were no domains with completely invalid indices, as there were at least two indices that were acceptable for each domain. The Serbian version of the HEXACO-60 has acceptable psychometric properties. This shorter version with 60 items may be more suitable for brief surveys or when the time allocated to fill in a questionnaire is limited.
