Abstract This program presents steps in various emergency surgical thoracic procedures on newborn infants. This objective is achieved with the aid of clinical subjects, diagrams, and x-rays. In each case the clinical signs are described, and the pre- and postoperative x-rays are shown. In this presentation an esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula are repaired in a 2-day-old male infant. A right thoracotomy is performed, the fourth rib is resected, and the azygous vein is ligated. The tracheoesophageal fistula is ligated and the proximal pouch and esophagus are anastomosed end-to-end. In the second male infant a left thoracotomy is performed to repair a diaphragmatic hernia. The seventh rib is resected, herniated bowel is reduced, and the Bochdalek defect in the left diaphragm is repaired with interrupted sutures. In the third case a 17-day-old male infant is shown to have an emphysematous middle lobe of the lung. A right thoracotomy is performed, the fifth rib is resected, the pulmonary arteries and vein to the middle lobe are resected and the middle lobe is removed.
