    Abstract In recent years, manufacturing companies have been continuously engaging in research for the full implementation of smart factories, with many studies on methods to prevent facility failures that directly affect the productivity of the manufacturing sites. However, most studies have only analyzed sensor signals rather than text manually typed by operators. In addition, existing studies have not proposed an actual application system considering the manufacturing site environment but only presented a model that predicts the status or failure of the facility. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a real-world failure prevention framework that alerts the operator by providing a list of possible failure categories based on a failure pattern database before the operator starts work. The failure pattern database is constructed by analyzing and categorizing manually entered text to provide more detailed information. The performance of the proposed framework was evaluated utilizing actual manufacturing data based on scenarios that can occur in a real-world manufacturing site. The performance evaluation experiments demonstrated that the proposed framework could prevent facility failures and enhance the productivity and efficiency of the shop floor.

    Abstract In 2016, the safety issues of humidifier disinfectants and some other safety incidents in personal cares caused chemical phobia syndrome in the Korean society. This series of events has created a trend for cosmetic consumers to undermine brand confidence and to self-check the safety of commercial cosmetic formulations through mobile apps. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of trust in domain specific information on the safety rating of cosmetic ingredients on the perceived value and the purchase intention of the cosmetics. The results of structural equation modeling showed that involvement of skin safety (ISS) had a positive effect on trust in domain specific information on safety (TDSI) and brand loyalty (BL). TDSI showed a positive effect on the perceived safety value (PFV) and the perceived social value (PSV), and BL had a positive effect on the PSV. ISS, TDSI, and PSV had a positive effect on the purchase intention (PI) of green-grade cosmetics (GGC). As hypothesized, BL had an adverse effect on PI of GGC. Given the results, utilizing the signal of the domain specific information may be recommended to new entrants to the cosmetic business or manufacturers with relatively weak brand power.

    Abstract Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) realized on commercial materials provides various functionalities, such as corrosion resistance, condensation heat transfer, anti-fouling, de/anti-icing, and self-cleaning. In particular, perfluorinated lubricants infused in fluorocarbon-coated porous structures have showed exceptional performances with durability; however, they caused several issues in safety, due to their difficulty in degradation and bio-accumulation. Here, we introduce a new approach to create the multifunctional lubricant-impregnated surface with edible oils and fatty acid, which are also safe to human body and degradable in nature. The edible oil-impregnated anodized nanoporous stainless steel surface shows a significantly low contact angle hysteresis and sliding angle, which is similar with general surface of fluorocarbon lubricant-infused systems. The edible oil impregnated in the hydrophobic nanoporous oxide surface also inhibits the direct contact of external aqueous solution to a solid surface structure. Due to such de-wetting property caused by a lubricating effect of edible oils, the edible oil-impregnated stainless steel surface shows enhanced corrosion resistance, anti-biofouling and condensation heat transfer with reduced ice adhesion.

    Abstract Summary: Background: Socioeconomic inequality in access to and use of health services and social care provided near the end of life, or end-of-life care (EOLC), is not well understood in many countries. We examined wealth inequality in EOLC—hospital, nursing home, and hospice use and receipt of formal and informal caregiving—in 22 countries in Europe, Asia (South Korea), and North America (United States, Mexico). Methods: We used harmonized data from nationally representative studies of people aged 50 and older that collected information on healthcare utilisation and caregiving receipt in the time preceding death. We categorized countries according to their level of public long-term care (LTC) spending and examined EOLC prevalence across countries. We used logistic regression models to estimate wealth inequality in each type of EOLC. Findings: In the USA the least wealthy had more hospital (OR 1.30, p = 0.008) and nursing home/care use (OR 1.88, p < 0.001). In South Korea the least wealthy had more nursing home/care use (OR 2.24, p = 0.003). The least wealthy in high LTC Europe had less hospice use (OR 0.56, p = 0.003). The least wealthy were also less likely to be hospitalized in European countries with low LTC spending (OR 0.81, p = 0.04), but more likely to receive informal caregiving (OR 1.25, p = 0.033). Formal care was more common among the least wealthy in high LTC Europe (OR 1.57, p = 0.002), the USA (OR 1.42, p < 0.001) and South Korea (OR 1.69, p = 0.028), but less common among the least wealthy in Mexico (OR 0.17, p < 0.001). Interpretation: Wealth inequality in EOLC exists across countries and reflects differences in the organization, financing, and delivery of care in different countries. The findings highlight the need to consider equity in current and future plans to improve EOLC access. Funding: United States National Institute on Aging Grant R01AG030153.

    Abstract Abstract Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and requires proactive management. This study aimed to investigate the association between care continuity and the outcomes of patients with dyslipidemia. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients with dyslipidemia by employing the Korea National Health Insurance claims database during the period 2007–2018. The Continuity of Care Index (COCI) was used to measure continuity of care. We considered incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a primary outcome. A Cox's proportional hazards regression model was used to quantify risks of primary outcome. There were 236,486 patients newly diagnosed with dyslipidemia in 2008 who were categorized into the high and low COC groups depending on their COCI. The adjusted hazard ratio for the primary outcome was 1.09 times higher (95% confidence interval: 1.06–1.12) in the low COC group than in the high COC group. The study shows that improved continuity of care for newly-diagnosed dyslipidemic patients might reduce the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

    Abstract Summary: Droplet-based single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data are plagued by ambient contaminations caused by nucleic acid material released by dead and dying cells. This material is mixed into the buffer and is co-encapsulated with cells, leading to a lower signal-to-noise ratio. Although there exist computational methods to remove ambient contaminations post-hoc, the reliability of algorithms in generating high-quality data from low-quality sources remains uncertain. Here, we assess data quality before data filtering by a set of quantitative, contamination-based metrics that assess data quality more effectively than standard metrics. Through a series of controlled experiments, we report improvements that can minimize ambient contamination outside of tissue dissociation, via cell fixation, improved cell loading, microfluidic dilution, and nuclei versus cell preparation; many of these parameters are inaccessible on commercial platforms. We provide end-users with insights on factors that can guide their decision-making regarding optimizations that minimize ambient contamination, and metrics to assess data quality.

    Abstract Abstract Greater stability of low-dimensional halide perovskites as opposed to their three-dimensional counterparts, alongside their high extinction coefficient and thus excellent emission properties, have made them popular candidates for optoelectronic applications. Topological edges are found in two-dimensional perovskites that show distinct electronic properties. In this work, using Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, performed on butylammonium lead bromide (BA2PbBr4) single crystals with optical bandgap of ~413 nm, we elucidate the electronic response of the edges and their potential impact on photodetector devices. We show that the charge-carriers are accumulated at the edges, increasing with the edge height. Wavelength-dependent surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements reveal that multiple sub-bandgap states exist in BA2PbBr4. As the edge height increases, the SPV amplitude at the edges reduces slightly more as compared to the adjacent regions, known as terraces, indicating relatively less reduction in band-bending at the surface due possibly to increased de-population of electrons from sub-bandgap states in the upper bandgap half. The existence of sub-bandgap states is further confirmed by the observation of below-bandgap emission (absorption) peaks characterised by spectral photoluminescence and photothermal deflection spectroscopy measurements. Finally, we fabricated a photodetector using a millimetre size BA2PbBr4 single crystal. Noticeable broadband photodetection response was observed in the sub-bandgap regions under green and red illumination, which is attributed to the existence of sub-bandgap states. Our observations suggest edge-height dependence of charge-carrier behaviour in BA2PbBr4 single crystals, a potential pathway that can be exploited for efficient broadband photodetector fabrication.

    Abstract Regulated proteolysis mediated by the ubiquitin proteasome system is a fundamental and essential feature of the eukaryotic cell division cycle. Most proteins with cell cycle-regulated stability are targeted for degradation by one of two related ubiquitin ligases, the Skp1-cullin-F box protein (SCF) complex or the anaphase-promoting complex (APC). Here we describe an unconventional cell cycle-regulated proteolytic mechanism that acts on the Acm1 protein, an inhibitor of the APC activator Cdh1 in budding yeast. Although Acm1 can be recognized as a substrate by the Cdc20-activated APC (APCCdc20) in anaphase, APCCdc20 is neither necessary nor sufficient for complete Acm1 degradation at the end of mitosis. An APC-independent, but 26S proteasome-dependent, mechanism is sufficient for complete Acm1 clearance from late mitotic and G1 cells. Surprisingly, this mechanism appears distinct from the canonical ubiquitin targeting pathway, exhibiting several features of ubiquitin-independent proteasomal degradation. For example, Acm1 degradation in G1 requires neither lysine residues in Acm1 nor assembly of polyubiquitin chains. Acm1 was stabilized though by conditional inactivation of the ubiquitin activating enzyme Uba1, implying some requirement for the ubiquitin pathway, either direct or indirect. We identified an amino terminal predicted disordered region in Acm1 that contributes to its proteolysis in G1. Although ubiquitin-independent proteasome substrates have been described, Acm1 appears unique in that its sensitivity to this mechanism is strictly cell cycle-regulated via cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) phosphorylation. As a result, Acm1 expression is limited to the cell cycle window in which Cdk is active. We provide evidence that failure to eliminate Acm1 impairs activation of APCCdh1 at mitotic exit, justifying its strict regulation by cell cycle-dependent transcription and proteolytic mechanisms.
