Abstract Configurational comparative methods (CCMs) and logic regression methods (LRMs) are two families of exploratory methods that employ very different techniques to analyze data generated by causal structures featuring conjunctural causation and equifinality. Aiming for the same by different means carries a substantive synergy potential, which, however, remains untapped so far because representatives of the two frameworks know little of each other. The purpose of this article is to change that. We first level the field for readers from both backgrounds by providing brief introductions to the basic ideas behind CCMs and LRMs. Then, we carve out the strengths and weaknesses of the two method families by benchmarking their performance when applied to binary data under a variety of different discovery contexts. It turns out that CCMs and LRMs have complementary strengths and weaknesses. This creates various promising avenues for cross-validation.

Title translation Flexiblere Antwortfunktionen für die PROMIS-Itembank zur körperlichen Funktionsfähigkeit durch Anwendung eines monotonen polynomischen Ansatzes
Abstract Purpose: In developing item banks for patient reported outcomes (PROs), nonparametric techniques are often used for investigating empirical item response curves, whereas final banks usually use parsimonious parametric models. A flexible approach based on monotonic polynomials (MP) provides a compromise by modeling items with both complex and simpler response curves. This paper investigates the suitability of MPs to PRO data. Method: Using PROMIS Wave 1 data (N = 15,725) for Physical Function, we fitted an MP model and the graded response model (GRM). We compared both models in terms of overall model fit, latent trait estimates, and item/test information. We quantified possible GRM item misfit using approaches that compute discrepancies with the MP. Through simulations, we investigated the ability of the MP to perform well versus the GRM under identical data collection conditions. Results: A likelihood ratio test (p < 0.001) and AIC (but not BIC) indicated better fit for the MP. Latent trait estimates and expected test scores were comparable between models, but we observed higher information for the MP in the lower range of physical functioning. Many items were flagged as possibly misfitting and simulations supported the performance of the MP. Yet discrepancies between the MP and GRM were small. Conclusion: The MP approach allows inclusion of items with complex response curves into PRO item banks. Information for the physical functioning item bank may be greater than originally thought for low levels of physical functioning. This may translate into small improvements if an MP approach is used.

Abstract The European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT) strives to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across all its activities. We surveyed the transplant community's experiences and perspectives regarding EDI within ESOT as an organization and its educational activities, and research in general. A total of 299 respondents completed the questionnaire. About half agreed that ESOT's Executive Committee, Council, and Sections/Committees are diverse and inclusive (51%) and that ESOT promotes EDI in its live and digital educational activities (54%). Forty percent of respondents agreed that scientific and clinical trials in the field of transplantation are diverse and inclusive. Despite the wide distribution of the survey, most of the respondents self-identified as White and were either physician or surgeon. However, the results contribute a unique insight into the experiences and perspectives of the transplantation community regarding EDI. Whilst ESOT is committed to the principles of EDI, perceptions and the high number of proposals show the apparent need to prioritize efforts to embed EDI across ESOT and transplantation science. These data should constitute a starting point for change and provide guidance for future efforts to promote EDI within the transplantation community.

Abstract Like other uterine sarcomas, low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas (LG-ESS) are a very rare tumor entity. In the past, research studies therefore discussed the various different types of the disease in combination. In addition, the classification of endometrial stromal tumors presented difficulties for quite some time so that in earlier studies it was not always possible to precisely distinguish between LG-ESS, high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, and undifferentiated uterine sarcoma. For LG-ESS, surgery with hysterectomy and adnexectomy is the first-line treatment. The benefits of lymphadenectomy and tumor debulking are unclear. Endocrine therapy with gestagens and aromatase inhibitors is under discussion to provide adjuvant treatment for patients with advanced stages of the disease. As radiotherapy only provides locoregional control, and in view of the usually good prognosis of patients with LG-ESS, its benefits need to be weighed against its side effects. In the case of recurrence, repeat surgery is the first choice. Further research studies viewing LG-ESS as a distinct entity are needed in order to improve treatment options for patients with LG-ESS.
