Abstract Universal approximation capability, also referred to as universality, is an important property of deep neural networks, endowing them with the potency to accurately represent the underlying target function in learning tasks. In practice, the architecture of deep neural networks largely influences the performance of the models. However, most existing methodologies for designing neural architectures, such as the heuristic manual design or neural architecture search, ignore the universal approximation property, thus losing a potential safeguard about the performance. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to design the architectures of deep neural networks with a universality guarantee based on first-order optimization algorithms, where the forward pass is interpreted as the updates of an optimization algorithm. The (explicit or implicit) network is designed by replacing each gradient term in the algorithm with a learnable module similar to a two-layer network or its derivatives Specifically, we explore the realm of width-bounded neural networks, a common practical scenario, showcasing their universality. Moreover, adding operations of normalization, downsampling, and upsampling does not hurt the universality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that width-bounded networks with universal approximation guarantee can be designed in a principled way. Our framework can inspire a variety of neural architectures including some renowned structures such as ResNet and DenseNet, as well as novel innovations. The experimental results on image classification problems demonstrate that the newly inspired networks are competitive and surpass the baselines of ResNet, DenseNet, as well as the advanced ConvNeXt and ViT, testifying to the effectiveness of our framework.

Abstract Background: Many studies have found an association between mood-disorder-related traits and endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, the cause-effect relationship remains unclear.
Aims: We conducted Mendelian randomisation analyses to evaluate any causal relationship between mood disorders and endometriosis as well as different sites of endometriosis.
Method: Summary-level statistics for mood-disorder-related traits and endometriosis (8288 cases, 68 969 controls) in European populations were derived from large-scale data-sets of genome-wide association studies. A two-sample Mendelian randomisation was performed using the inverse-variance weighted and weight median methods. Further sensitivity analyses, including heterogeneity, pleiotropy and leave-one-out analyses, were conducted to test the consistency of the results.
Results: Genetically determined mood swings (odds ratio = 2.557, 95% CI: 1.192-5.483,
Conclusions: Our results suggest that mood-disorder-related traits increase the risk of endometriosis and adenomyosis. This study provides new insights into the potential pathogenesis of endometriosis and adenomyosis, and highlights the importance of preventing endometriosis and adenomyosis in patients with mood-disorder-related traits.

Abstract To explore an appropriate time interval between oocyte retrieval and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for optimal embryological and clinical outcomes in ICSI cycles over 40 years of maternal age. A retrospective analysis of 1476 ICSI fresh cycles from women aged over 40 years, was performed at the Reproduction Medicine Research Center of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, between December 2013 and August 2020. The fertilization rate and clinical pregnancy rate were the main outcomes. Multivariate linear regression and logistic regression analysis of factors showed that fertilization rate (P = 0.024) and clinical pregnancy rate (P = 0.011) were significantly associated with oocyte pick up (OPU)-ICSI interval. A longer OPU-ICSI interval (no more than 6 h) was associated with a higher fertilization rate but significantly decreased the clinical pregnancy rate when the OPU-ICSI interval was over 4 h (P < 0.05). The optimal OPU-ICSI interval is between 3 and 4 h for excellent embryological and clinical outcomes in ICSI cycles over 40 years of maternal age.

Abstract Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising solution to mitigate environmental degradation caused by transportation. The increased concerns over climate change and air pollution have accelerated the adoption of EVs globally. The use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to charge EVs significantly reduces the emission of harmful gases, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment. The transition to EVs has the potential to create a significant positive impact on the environment, reducing the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. This study will explore the potential benefits of EVs for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and noise pollution. Furthermore, this research will consider the impact of EVs on the energy grid and investigate the feasibility of integrating renewable energy sources to power EVs. The study will also examine the economic and social implications of EV adoption and the potential for job creation in the EV industry. The findings of this research will contribute to a better understanding of the role that EVs play in mitigating the environmental impact of transportation. This research is especially relevant as the world moves towards a more sustainable and decarbonized future. Policymakers, industry leaders, and consumers can use the insights gained from this study to make informed decisions about the future of transportation and its impact on the environment. In conclusion, this study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of EVs and their potential to create a sustainable future for transportation.

Abstract The aim of the study was to compare retrospectively the extent of blastulation timing (Day 5 or later) and expansion grade to predict the ability of blastocysts to give rise to a pregnancy. Blastocysts frozen on day 5 with a lower expansion grade (group D5) or day 6 with a higher expansion grade (group D6) were included. A single embryo was thawed and transferred on day 5 after ovulation or progesterone supplementation. Differences in patient baseline characteristics, endometrial preparation and pregnancy outcomes between groups were stratified by patient age and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels. Logistic regression was used to analyse the results. A total of 617 blastocysts in group D5 and 1134 blastocysts in group D6 were assessed. Stratified analyses showed higher biochemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy and live birth rates for patients aged less than 30 years old, and higher ongoing pregnancy rate for patients with AMH ≥ 1.1 ng/ml. For patients aged less than 30 years old, the biochemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in group D5 were higher than those in group D6.

Abstract This paper considers a multi-environment linear regression model in which data from multiple experimental settings are collected. The joint distribution of the response variable and covariates may vary across different environments, yet the conditional expectations of $y$ given the unknown set of important variables are invariant. Such a statistical model is related to the problem of endogeneity, causal inference, and transfer learning. The motivation behind it is illustrated by how the goals of prediction and attribution are inherent in estimating the true parameter and the important variable set. We construct a novel environment invariant linear least squares (EILLS) objective function, a multi-environment version of linear least-squares regression that leverages the above conditional expectation invariance structure and heterogeneity among different environments to determine the true parameter. Our proposed method is applicable without any additional structural knowledge and can identify the true parameter under a near-minimal identification condition. We establish non-asymptotic $\ell_2$ error bounds on the estimation error for the EILLS estimator in the presence of spurious variables. Moreover, we further show that the $\ell_0$ penalized EILLS estimator can achieve variable selection consistency in high-dimensional regimes. These non-asymptotic results demonstrate the sample efficiency of the EILLS estimator and its capability to circumvent the curse of endogeneity in an algorithmic manner without any prior structural knowledge. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to realize statistically efficient invariance learning in the general linear model.
