Abstract In SERS analysis, the specificity of molecular fingerprints is combined with potential single-molecule sensitivity so that is an attractive tool to detect molecules in trace amounts. Although several substrates have been widely used from early on, there are still some problems such as the difficulties to bind some molecules to the substrate. With the development of nanotechnology, an increasing interest has been focused on plasmonic metal nanoparticles hybridized with (2D) nanomaterials due to their unique properties. More frequently, the excellent properties of the hybrids compounds have been used to improve the drawbacks of the SERS platforms in order to create a system with outstanding properties. In this review, the physics and working principles of SERS will be provided along with the properties of differently shaped metal nanoparticles. After that, an overview on how the hybrid compounds can be engineered to obtain the SERS platform with unique properties will be given.

Abstract A novel water-soluble uranyl-salophen (salophen=N,N'-disalicylidene-o-phenylenediaminate) complex was obtained. Solubility was achieved in aqueous methyl-β-cyclodextrin solutions, taking advantage of the host-guest interactions established with the adamantyl moieties present on the ligand skeleton. Such an approach facilitates the synthesis of the receptor and the purification processes and, in perspective, can be definitely applicable to other molecular scaffolds. UV/Vis titration experiments demonstrate that the capacity of the uranyl-salophen core to behave as a receptor for anions is retained in water and appears comparable with that previously reported for other water-soluble uranyl-salophen systems. Hence the presence of cyclodextrins does not interfere with molecular recognition processes.

Abstract Aiming to develop a nanoparticle-based optical biosensor using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized using green methods and supported by carbon-based nanomaterials, we studied the role of carbon derivatives in promoting AuNPs localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), as well as their morphology, dispersion, and stability. Carbon derivatives are expected to work as immobilization platforms for AuNPs, improving their analytical performance. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared using an eco-friendly approach in a single step by reduction of HAuCl

Abstract Directive 2000/60/EC requires the achievement of a 'good chemical status' for surface water within pre-established dates. Disinfection is needed to achieve compulsory final microbial limit values (in Italy for wastewater discharges the parameter Escherichia coli - EC - is imposed by law with a maximum limit value of 5,000 cfu/100 mL). Liquid waste and disinfection by-products must be considered when designing appropriate monitoring of dangerous substances; the specific classes of substances must be investigated according to the typology of received wastewaters and liquid wastes (where applicable) and specific analytical techniques, with Limit of Detection (LOD) lower than the limit values, must be applied; the difficulties faced by national and regional environmental control Agencies is that these techniques have to be applied during ordinary activity and not only for research purposes. The study aims to present the control of dangerous substances, as a screening view, in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges in the province of Venice (Northern Italy) for the period 2007-2010 based on available data from institutional controls. In addition, the wastewater disinfection process with ozone applied to a medium size WWTP (45,000 Population Equivalents) is presented as a case study, with a view to assessing the microbiological abatement efficacy and the presence of dangerous substances. Discharge quality of the WWTPs in the province of Venice presented mean values that were higher than the LOD, but only for certain metals. For the Paese plant, zinc and chloroform were the only micro-pollutants detected with a higher level than the LOD. From microbiological data in the period 2006-2011 the disinfection abatement efficiency for Paese was, in most cases above 99% for EC, faecal coliform (FC), faecal streptococci (FS) while efficiency was slightly lower for total coliform (TC); however, the proposed criterion aimed at respecting 99.99% abatement was not completely satisfied. Therefore, despite the high organic and industrial load of the considered plant and the need to find an alternative system for chlorine, as chlorine disinfection has been banned in the Veneto region since December 2012, ozone efficiency is not completely satisfactory and other systems such as peracetic or performic acids and UV systems must be considered.

Abstract Purpose: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and aggressive tumor. ACC male patients under adjuvant mitotane therapy (AMT) frequently develop hypogonadism, however sexual function has never been assessed in this setting. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate in AMT treated ACC patients the changes in Luteinizing hormone (LH), Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), total testosterone (TT) and calculated free testosterone (cFT), the prevalence and type of hypogonadism and sexual function, the latter before and after androgen replacement therapy (ART).
Methods: LH, SHBG, TT and cFT were assessed in ten ACC patients at baseline (T0) and six (T1), twelve (T2), and eighteen (T3) months after AMT. At T3, ART was initiated in eight hypogonadal patients, and LH, SHBG, TT and cFT levels were evaluated after six months (T4). In six patients, sexual function was evaluated before (T3) and after (T4) ART using the International Index of Erectile Function-15 (IIEF-15) questionnaire.
Results: Under AMT we observed higher SHBG and LH and lower cFT levels at T1-T3 compared to T0 (all p<0.05). At T3, hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction (ED) were detected in 80% and 83.3% of cases. At T4, we observed a significant cFT increase in men treated with T gel, and a significant improvement in IIEF-15 total and subdomains scores and ED prevalence (16.7%) in men under ART.
Conclusion: AMT was associated with hypergonatropic hypogonadism and ED, while ART led to a significant improvement of cFT levels and sexual function in the hypogonadal ACC patients. Therefore, we suggest to evaluate LH, SHBG, TT and cFT and sexual function during AMT, and start ART in the hypogonadal ACC patients with sexual dysfunction.

Abstract The ability of Neisseria meningitidis Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMV) to induce protective responses in humans is well established and mainly attributed to Porin A (PorA). However, the contribution of additional protein antigens to protection remains to be elucidated. In this study we dissected the immunogenicity of antigens originating from the OMV component of the 4CMenB vaccine in mice and humans. We collected functional data on a panel of strains for which bactericidal responses to 4CMenB in infants was attributable to the OMV component and evaluated the role of 30 OMV-specific protein antigens in cross-coverage. By using tailor-made protein microarrays, the immunosignature of OMV antigens was determined. Three of these proteins, OpcA, NspA, and PorB, triggered mouse antibodies that were bactericidal against several N. meningitidis strains. Finally, by genetic deletion and/or serum depletion studies, we demonstrated the ability of OpcA and PorB to induce functional immune responses in infant sera after vaccination. In conclusion, while confirming the role of PorA in eliciting protective immunity, we identified two OMV antigens playing a key role in protection of infants vaccinated with the 4CMenB vaccine against different N. meningitidis serogroup B strains.

Abstract In 2020, the Global Cancer Observatory estimated the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) at around 10.7% coupled with a mortality rate of 9.5%. The explanation for these values lies in the tumor microenvironment consisting of the extracellular matrix and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) offers a promising target for cancer therapy since its functions contribute to tumor progression. Immunohistochemistry examination of FAP, fibronectin ED-B, and CXCR4 in primary tumors and their respective synchronous and/or metachronous metastases along with semiquantitative analysis have been carried out on histological samples of 50 patients diagnosed with metastatic CRC. The intensity of FAP, articulated by both "Intensity %" and "Intensity score", is lower in the first metastasis compared to the primary tumor with a statistically significant correlation. No significant correlations have been observed regarding fibronectin ED-B and CXCR4. Tumors that produce FAP have an ambivalent relationship with this protein. At first, they exploit FAP, but later they reduce its expressiveness. Although our study has not directly included FAP-Inhibitor (FAPI) PET/CT, the considerable expression of FAP reveals its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool worthy of further investigation. This dynamic relationship between cancer and FAP has substantial diagnostic and therapeutic implications.
