Abstract Generating scientific and technological knowledge and converting them into innovations which are of added value to society are key instruments for a society economic growth and development. As outstanding as these capabilities are for other regions in the world, Africa science, innovation, education and research infrastructure, particularly in fundamental and applied physics, have over the years been under valued and under resourced. To efficiently address the scientific and technological gaps with the rest of the world, Africa stance needs radical overhaul. With the big ambition to drive a community wide effort in Africa, the African Strategy for Fundamental and Applied Physics (ASFAP) was founded. The aspiration is to demonstrate the physics potential benefits for African society and how physics can contribute to the technological infrastructure development and to provide trained personnel needed to take advantage of scientific advances. The vision consists in fostering scientific literacy driven by physics based technologies and their impact for economic growth, including other sciences that draw heavily on advances in physics. In addition to developing and enhancing collaborations and partnerships among Africans in national, regional, and Pan African organizations. This should assist to tackle the challenges that Africans struggle and prioritize educational and research resources, innovation and development. The ASFAP initiative could present a unique opportunity of overcoming the complexity of the African social and economic challenges, if Africa needs to have and maintain its position as a coleader in the global scientific process and reap the consequent socioeconomic benefits. ASFAP will take a few years with a final report to notify the African policymakers and broader communities.

Abstract This paper focuses on managing the Cultural Heritage maintenance process through web platforms, exploring a data-driven new approach that relies on the framework of Master Data Management (MDM). The MDM framework is based on data quality, revisioning and auditing of information, and the Microsoft SQL Server Master Data Services (MDS) was used. It is a highly customizable commercial tool that proved to be effective and able to manage extended and articulated databases and provide stability and long-term software support. MDS provides powerful tools to avoid duplicates, ensure data quality, and record all the modifications that occurred on the dataset over time. These are key features to build a reliable platform for information management of complex CH assets. The paper presents some first tests applied for the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy case of study. It is a UNESCO wide religious architectural complex site in northern Italy’s mountainous part. The paper compares approaches and previous experiences of Sacri Monti management using web platform information systems, such as the BIM3DSG, Chimera, and Main10ance, to support Sacri Monti management activity.

Abstract In the field of geomatics, the development of 3D surveying techniques that can produce dense point clouds and high-resolution three-dimensional models has opened the possibility of using these techniques to generate digital replicas of a given asset to be used in contexts of cultural promotion or entertainment. These non-traditional applications have been made easier by the spreading of low-cost but fast surveying techniques, allowing them to be used in contexts or projects with fewer resources. Close-range photogrammetry is nowadays the cheapest, most flexible, and fastest technique that can be used to produce high-resolution and high-quality digital copies of reality. In this paper, we present an application of the Ant3D multi-camera system, a novel photogrammetric device designed for the rapid 3D surveying of sites characterized by poor accessibility and narrow spaces. The paper describes the three-dimensional acquisition of underground tunnels in a hazardous abandoned mining site. The digitalisation work aims to create 3D models to be experienced safely in a virtual- or augmented- reality immersive navigation of the site for cultural promotion. A workflow is proposed to turn raw reality-based 3D models into refined and efficient 3D assets that can be exploited in a game engine. Applications for mobile devices, desktop, and VR headsets, using the produced 3D assets are described.

Abstract The popularity of automatic photogrammetric techniques has promoted many experiments in underwater scenarios leading to quite impressive visual results, even by non-experts. Despite these achievements, a deep understanding of camera and lens behaviors as well as optical phenomena involved in underwater operations is fundamental to better plan field campaigns and anticipate the achievable results. The paper presents a geometric investigation of a consumer grade underwater camera housing, manufactured by NiMAR and equipped with a 7'' dome port. After a review of flat and dome ports, the work analyzes, using simulations and real experiments, the main optical phenomena involved when operating a camera underwater. Specific aspects which deal with photogrammetric acquisitions are considered with some tests in laboratory and in a swimming pool. Results and considerations are shown and commented.

Abstract Accurate 3D city models represent an important source of geospatial information to support various “smart city” applications, such as space management, energy assessment, 3D cartography, noise and pollution mapping as well as disaster management. Even though remarkable progress has been made in recent years, there are still many open issues, especially when it comes to the 3D modelling of complex urban scenarios like historical and densely-built city centres featuring narrow streets and non-conventional building shapes. Most approaches introduce strong building priors/constraints on symmetry and roof typology that penalize urban environments having high variations of roof shapes. Furthermore, although oblique photogrammetry is rapidly maturing, the use of slanted views for façade reconstruction is not completely included in the reconstruction pipeline of state-of-the-art software. This paper aims to investigate state-of-the-art methods for 3D building modelling in complex urban scenarios with the support of oblique airborne images. A reconstruction approach based on roof primitives fitting is tested. Oblique imagery is then exploited to support the manual editing of the generated building models. At the same time, mobile mapping data are collected at cm resolution and then integrated with the aerial ones. All approaches are tested on the historical city centre of Bergamo (Italy).

Abstract This paper examines the survey of tall buildings in an emergency context like in the case of post-seismic events. The after-earthquake survey has to guarantee time-savings, high precision and security during the operational stages. The main goal is to optimize the application of methodologies based on acquisition and automatic elaborations of photogrammetric data even with the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems in order to provide fast and low cost operations. The suggested methods integrate new technologies with commonly used technologies like TLS and topographic acquisition. The value of the photogrammetric application is demonstrated by a test case, based on the comparison of acquisition, calibration and 3D modeling results in case of use of a laser scanner, metric camera and amateur reflex camera. The test would help us to demonstrate the efficiency of image based methods in the acquisition of complex architecture. The case study is Santa Barbara Bell tower in Mantua. The applied survey solution allows a complete 3D database of the complex architectural structure to be obtained for the extraction of all the information needed for significant intervention. This demonstrates the applicability of the photogrammetry using UAV for the survey of vertical structures, complex buildings and difficult accessible architectural parts, providing high precision results.

Abstract To evaluate the synergistic activity of erythromycin and human polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) on the binomial erythromycin-resistant (ERY(R)) Streptococcus pyogenes/host, the phagocytic and bactericidal activities of PMNs against ERY(R) streptococcal strains (cMLS(B), M, and iMLS(B) A, B and C phenotypes) were assessed in the presence of the macrolide. The results showed that when erythromycin, PMNs and streptococci [both erythromycin-sensitive (ERY(S)) and ERY(R)] were simultaneously present in the culture medium, PMN phagocytic activity was similar to that of drug-free controls. In contrast, the results emphasised a significant high increase in intracellular killing by PMNs in the presence of erythromycin not only for ERY(S) streptococci but also for ERY(R)S. pyogenes with high (cMLS(B), iMLS(B) A and iMLS(B) B phenotypes) and moderate (M and iMLS(B) C phenotypes) erythromycin resistance compared with controls without drug. From literature data it emerged that, even if intracellularly concentrated, erythromycin is relatively inactive because of its instability. The results indicate that the enhanced intra-PMN streptococcal killing detected is mainly attributable to PMN bactericidal systems that synergise with intracellular erythromycin in eradicating ERY(R)S. pyogenes strains (both with high and moderate resistance). These data confirm that the antibiotic resistance detected in vitro does not always imply a failure of antimicrobial treatment.

Title translation Treatment of uretero-intestinal and uretero-vesical stenoses with the Acucise balloon catheter.
Abstract Objective: Acucise balloon catheter has been proposed as an alternative to open surgery for the treatment of strictures of the ureteropelvic junction because of its low morbidity and the short hospital stay following the endoscopic procedure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of this technique applied to patients developing strictures after surgical reimplantation of the ureterovesical (UV) or uretero-intestinal (UI) junction.
Material and methods: Between March 1997 and January 2000, 12 strictures (11 patients) were treated by Acucise balloon catheter via an antegrade and/or retrograde approach with double J stenting for an average of 6 weeks (range: 4 to 12 weeks): 6 uretero-ileal strictures (3 Bricker, 1 uretero-ileoplasty, 1 enterocystoplasty and 1 Kock pouch) and 6 ureterovesical strictures (Lich-Grégoir or Faquin UV reimplantations after gynaecological, vascular or endoscopic surgery). The median postoperative follow-up was 16 months (range: 10 months-36 months). A good result was defined by the absence of recurrence of the stricture evaluated both clinically and radiologically (regression of stasis measured by IVU and/or ultrasonography).
Results: The mean operating time was 70 min and the mean hospital stay was 4.8 days (range: 3 and 14 days). Only one intraoperative complication was observed (migration of the double J stent to the kidney). The operation was successful in 8 patients (75%). The success rate was 83% for ureterovesical strictures and 50% for uretero-ileal strictures. A history of previous irradiation appeared to be a factor of failure.
Conclusion: The Acucise procedure is a minimally invasive and effective (75% success rate) treatment option for the treatment of postoperative stricture after ureteric reimplantations. In our department, this option is considered to be first-line treatment, as surgical reimplantation is reserved for failures of the endoscopic technique.

Abstract One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with
