Abstract Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum L.) is one of the most popular cut flowers worldwide due to its multi-flowered stems having single, semi-double and double rose-like flowers in a variety of colors. However, its postharvest life can be short if not handled properly. A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various homemade folk floral preservative solutions applied as pulses or vase solutions on cut lisianthus stems. Both experiments were laid out individually in completely randomized design, with five replications of two stems each and evaluated in a vase life evaluation room set at 20±2 °C temperature and 50±10% of relative humidity along with 12 h of light from white fluorescent tubes. Results revealed significant differences among different pulsing treatments as 2% sucrose + 150 mg L⁻¹ citric acid had longest vase life (10.3 days), whereas, 2% sucrose + 3 mL L⁻¹ lime juice, 2% sucrose + 5% aloe vera gel, 2% sucrose + 30 mL L⁻¹ moringa leaf extract (MLE) and 2% sucrose + 15 mL L⁻¹ bleach had best flower quality (8.3) and were statistically similar. Moreover, (50:50) lemon/lime soda and water had highest water uptake (98 mL) and ion leakage (326.8%), whereas, 2% sucrose had highest (735 µs cm⁻¹) change in electric conductivity. Among vase treatments when compared to commercial solutions, Floralife Clear Professional Flower Food, Chrysal Clear Universal Flower Food and 2% sucrose + 4 mL L⁻¹ lime juice had longest vase life (16.6, 15.9 and 15.7 days, respectively) and were statistically similar, whereas, highest microbial colonies (6.14 CFU mL⁻¹) were observed in solution having 5% sucrose only and the lowest with the commercial solutions. In summary, lisianthus stems placed in vase treatments had longest vase life, while those pulsed ones had better visible quality and use of sugar with lemon/lime juice as a vase solution produced a similar vase life as commercial preservatives.

Abstract The situation in Sudan have deteriorated since the ongoing war outbreak in April 2023. This article sheds light on the pharmacological status in Sudan in terms of shortage of supply, rising demands, and regulatory issues. The ongoing civil war has acutely impacted the dilapidated pharmaceutical status of Sudan, patients have suffered from the paucity of medical services forcing an out-of-control rise in underreported morbidity and mortality. To mitigate this uprising issue, an increase in stakeholder communication is crucial to deal with this national threat and establish a system for reporting the shortage.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease that has a potential of causing cardiovascular illness. Cardiac outcomes of COVID-19 mainly include acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction. However, pericardial involvement is very rare. Here, we present a case of pericarditis and pericardial effusion in a known hypertensive COVID-19 patient. Our case was a diagnostic dilemma as the literature review mentioned that cardiovascular manifestations are mostly reported in symptomatic and critically ill patients of COVID-19. However, this patient has no viral respiratory illness, and is otherwise healthy.

Abstract Carotid artery intima media thickness estimation is a well-established way of cardio vascular disease evaluation. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to develop normal carotid intima media thickness percentile values for a Pakistani cohort. Data was collected at the Departments of Radiology and Family Medicine, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from April 2014 to August 2015. High frequency ultrasound of carotid was done in 257 patients [97 male (38%), 160 female (62%)] without any known carotid artery disease. Reference ranges (90% range between 5th and 95th centiles) were constructed for each common carotid and internal carotid artery measurement and displayed in graph form. The mean difference was found in left common carotid artery (0.55 ±0.13) and left internal carotid artery thickness (0.50 ±0.10) significant at p=0.031 and p=0.014, respectively. The IMTpercentile graphs developed in this study for internal and common carotid arteries are exclusive for this population and can be used to assess vascular health from ultrasound measurements.

Abstract Objective: To compare carotid Intima media thickness and atherosclerosis burden amongst healthy, diabetic and hypertensive Pakistani patients.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Department of radiology and family medicine, Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi from April 2014 to July 2015. Bilateral carotid ultrasound was done in 133 healthy adults, 65 hypertensive, 31 type-2 diabetic and 37 hypertensive with type-2 diabetes patients. Normal adults were matched for age and gender. Mean intimal media thickness was measured for common and internal carotid arteries. Presence or absence of atherosclerotic plaque was also identified. Height, weight, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and other risk factors were also assessed. Ultrasound findings were compared between healthy and diseased patients through statistical tests.
Results: A total of 266 patients participated (Controls=133, Hypertensive=65, Diabetic=31, and Diabetes with Hypertension=37). There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the four patients' groups for age (p>0.05) and gender (p>0.05). The mean carotid intima media thickenss of right common carotid artery was significantly higher in patients with diabetes along with hypertension as compared to the control group (p=0.03). For (RICA) Right Internal Carotid Artery, (LCCA) Left Common Carotid Artery and (LICA) Left Internal Carotid Artery, there was a significantly higher thickness among patients with hypertension as compared to the control group with p=0.011, p=0.002, and p=0.039 respectively.
Conclusions: Increased CIMT is most likely associated with underlying chronic diseases. Ultrasound is a non-invasive, easily available and useful modality for early detection and prevention of vascular atherosclerosis.
