Abstract From the mid-1930s, with Raízes do Brasil , to the mid-1960s, with O extremo Oeste , Sérgio Buarque de Holanda undergoes a significant change in his understanding of Brazilian space. Initially, in a close dialogue with Gilberto Freyre, the author conceives the country drawing on the notion of the tropics, a fluid space where Portugal could be recreated through the bond with the ocean. In Monções and Caminhos e fronteiras , the historian develops a deliberately opposed vision, conceiving the country from the notion of frontier, a rough space where a foreigner's adaptability reaches its limit. In this phase, Jaime Cortesão and his thesis of Brazil-island became an invariable target of criticism.

Abstract Purpose: The annual teaching oral-systemic health (TOSH) virtual clinical simulation and case study activity exposes interprofessional teams of nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, dental, medical, and pharmacy students to a virtual clinical simulation experience that uses oral-systemic health as a clinical exemplar for promoting interprofessional core competencies. The present study examines changes in participating students' self-reported interprofessional competencies following participation in virtual TOSH from 2020 to 2022. These findings are also compared to those from in-person TOSH (2019) to examine the equivalence of student outcomes of both the in-person and virtual programs.
Methods: A pre- and post-test evaluation design was used to examine the effectiveness of exposure to the TOSH program on self-reported attainment of interprofessional competencies for participating students using the interprofessional collaborative competency attainment scale.
Results: Analysis of pre- and post-surveys demonstrated statistically significant improvement in students' self-rated interprofessional experience competencies following the virtual TOSH program, which aligns with results from the in-person cohorts. Similar findings between the in-person and virtual cohorts indicated no statistically significant difference between the two formats.
Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the success of TOSH in promoting attainment of interprofessional competencies among future health professionals. We encourage administrators and faculty who lead health professional programs to take advantage of using virtual simulations as an integral component of interprofessional oral health clinical experiences where students from different health professions learn from and about each other in assessing and treating patients across the lifespan.

Abstract News organizations increasingly use the terms “climate emergency” and “climate crisis” to convey the urgency of climate change; yet, little is known about how this terminology affects news audiences. This study experimentally examined how using “climate emergency,” “climate crisis,” or “climate change” in Twitter-based news stories influences public engagement with climate change and news perceptions, as well as whether the effects depend on the focus of the news (i.e., on climate impacts, actions, or both impacts and actions) and on participants’ political ideology. Results showed no effect of terminology on climate change engagement; however, “climate emergency” reduced perceived news credibility and newsworthiness compared to “climate change.” Both climate engagement and news perceptions were more consistently affected by the focus of the stories: news about climate impacts increased fear, decreased efficacy beliefs and hope, and reduced news credibility compared to news about climate actions. No interactions with political ideology were found.

Abstract Enfuvirtide was the first marketed fusion inhibitor that worked by binding to glycoprotein 41 of the HIV envelope, preventing the conformational changes required for HIV fusion with CD4+ T cells. Due to its novel mechanisms of action, it was frequently used in the past as part of regimens for the indication of multi-class-resistant HIV until newer oral agents emerged. Here, we describe the case of a 40-year-old man who used enfuvirtide injections from 2012 to 2017 inclusive for multi-class-resistant HIV until he presented in 2021 with an abscess overlying a right lower quadrant mass requiring drainage via pigtail. Congo red stain of the tissue showed positive apple green birefringence on amorphous material after polarization, enabling the diagnosis of enfuvirtide-induced amyloidosis. The patient experienced significant improvement following surgical excision of the cysts and nodules. This case demonstrates that sequelae of injection site reactions can persist for many years following the cessation of enfuvirtide injections.

Abstract With the closure of most operating rooms (ORs) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the traditional allocation of block OR time needed to be redesigned An important factor permitting the treatment of patients in a prioritized fashion was our pre-existing centralized OR booking (CORB) framework, which already required surgeons to categorize the priority level for each patient The CORB, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary OR oversight committee that was formed during COVID-19 to review and triage the urgent cases, allowed for prioritization of cases among surgical services Centralized OR booking provided opportunities that were essential in OR planning during the pandemic, including the ability to plan surgeries to maximize OR efficiency, minimize the number of admissions on any given day to the wards and the intensive care unit, flatten the number of admissions over the week and provide the flexibility to ramp up or down the number of ORs as the crisis changed
