    Abstract S.19-41

Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies have by now become established in numerous engineering areas of application. Also in the cultural and media fields interactive three-dimensional content is being increasingly made available for information purposes, and used in scientific research. On the one hand, this development is accelerated by current advances in smartphones, tablets and head-mounted displays. These support complex 3D applications in mobile application scenarios, and enable us to capture our real physical environment using multimodal sensors in order to correlate it with the digital 3D world. On the other hand, new automated digitization technologies such as CultLab3D of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD allow the production of the necessary digital replicas of real objects, quickly, economically and of high quality.

Abstract In the field of physically based simulation, high quality of the simulation model is crucial for the correctness of the simulation results and the performance of the simulation algorithm. When working with spline or subdivision models in the context of isogeometric analysis, the quality of the parameterization has to be considered in addition to the geometric quality of the control mesh. Following Cohen et al.'s concept of model quality in addition to mesh quality, we present a parameterization quality metric tailored for Catmull-Clark (CC) solids. It measures the quality of the limit volume based on a quality measure for conformal mappings, revealing local distortions and singularities. We present topological operations that resolve these singularities by splitting certain types of boundary cells that typically occur in interactively designed CC-solid models. The improved models provide higher parameterization quality that positively affects the simulation results without additional computational costs for the solver.

Abstract The rising quantity and complexity of data creates a need to design and optimize data processing pipelines-the set of data processing steps, parameters and algorithms that perform operations on the data. Visualization can support this process but, although there are many examples of systems for visual parameter analysis, there remains a need to systematically assess users' requirements and match those requirements to exemplar visualization methods. This article presents a new characterization of the requirements for pipeline design and optimization. This characterization is based on both a review of the literature and first-hand assessment of eight application case studies. We also match these requirements with exemplar functionality provided by existing visualization tools. Thus, we provide end-users and visualization developers with a way of identifying functionality that addresses data processing problems in an application. We also identify seven future challenges for visualization research that are not met by the capabilities of today's systems.

    Abstract S.13-27

The paper reports on the 40 years of development of Computer Graphics and, more recently, Visual computing (VC) at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany, from its beginning in 1975 to the leading "Computer Graphics and Visual Computing Hub" in Europe as of 2014. This development is described along three axes. First, the institutional development and its rational to establish Computer Graphics as a discipline of Computer Science and as an enabling technology for developing our Knowledge Society, are described. Second, the scientific and technological impact based on the teaching activities and the large number of theses submitted in Darmstadt for the area during these 40 years are addressed. Finally, the research roadmaps of the Computer Graphics and Visual Computing Hub in Darmstadt are presented relatively to the different stages of CG and VC research, relatively to a scientific view to the large number of projects implemented over these 40 years and, finally, also relatively to the project results as seen from the media. In order to manage the quantity as well as the complexity of the information available, the description of these roadmaps is divided in four time periods: 1975-1984, 1985-1994, 1995-2004 and 2004-2015. The paper also gives the view of the authors on how they see the future of Computer Graphics and Visual Computing. At the end, the paper includes an extensive list of references for the reported content.

Abstract This tutorial presents probability theory techniques for boosting linear algorithms. The approach is based on statistics and uses educated guesses instead of comprehensive calculations. Because estimates can be calculated in sublinear time, many algorithms can benefit from statistical estimation.
