    Abstract Blood glucose management in intensive care units (ICU) remains a controversial topic. We assessed the association between time-weighted average glucose (TWAG) levels and ICU mortality in critically ill patients in a real-world study. This retrospective study included critically ill patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database. Glycemic distance is the difference between TWAG in the ICU and preadmission usual glycemia assessed with glycated hemoglobin at ICU admission. The TWAG and glycemic distance were divided into 4 groups and 3 groups, and their associations with ICU mortality risk were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the non-linear relationship. A total of 4737 adult patients were included. After adjusting for covariates, compared with TWAG ≤ 110 mg/dL, the odds ratios (ORs) of the TWAG > 110 mg/dL groups were 1.62 (95% CI 0.97-2.84, p = 0.075), 3.41 (95% CI 1.97-6.15, p < 0.05), and 6.62 (95% CI 3.6-12.6, p < 0.05). Compared with glycemic distance at - 15.1-20.1 mg/dL, the ORs of lower or higher groups were 0.78 (95% CI 0.50-1.21, p = 0.3) and 2.84 (95% CI 2.12-3.82, p < 0.05). The effect of hyperglycemia on ICU mortality was more pronounced in non-diabetic and non-septic patients. TWAG showed a U-shaped relationship with ICU mortality risk, and the mortality risk was minimal at 111 mg/dL. Maintaining glycemic distance ≤ 20.1 mg/dL may be beneficial. In different subgroups, the impact of hyperglycemia varied.

    Abstract Presence of pituitary metastases (PMs) is a relatively rare clinical situation, especially when originating from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 73-year-old man presented with headaches, diplopia, and soon impaired vision, as well as gastrointestinal symptoms. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a space-occupying mass in the sellar region. The patient had a history of hepatocellular carcinoma and recent abdominal ultrasound and positron emission tomography (PET) indicated recurrence and metastases. Endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal tumor excision was performed, and postoperative pathological report confirmed the diagnosis of HCC PM. In the literature review, 17 published cases of HCC PMs were summarized. Both the diagnosis and management of HCC PMs are difficult. Patients who had HCC-related history and new-onset headaches or diplopia should be inspected with a suspicion of metastatic lesions. Surgical intervention with transnasal endoscope is only recommended to ameliorate the symptoms and improve the life quality.

    Abstract As corrective feedback (CF) is conducive to students' second language (L2) development, a considerable number of studies have investigated the effects of different types of CF strategies on EFL/ESL learning achievement. However, the role of learner engagement has been largely neglected in the field of CF research. The present study aims to describe the role of learner engagement with CF in EFL/ESL classrooms by reviewing theoretical and empirical evidence. The findings reveal that learner engagement is indispensable for CF to be effective, and providing strategies for working with CF is essential to guide EFL/ESL learners in their learning process. The implications for teacher CF practice and learner engagement training are also discussed.

    Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) necessitates prompt diagnostic scrutiny to enable immediate, targeted interventions. This study unveils an advanced convolutional-neural-network (CNN) algorithm that was meticulously engineered to examine resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for early ASD detection in pediatric cohorts. The CNN architecture amalgamates convolutional, pooling, batch-normalization, dropout, and fully connected layers, optimized for high-dimensional data interpretation. Rigorous preprocessing yielded 22,176 two-dimensional echo planar samples from 126 subjects (56 ASD, 70 controls) who were sourced from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE I) repository. The model, trained on 17,740 samples across 50 epochs, demonstrated unparalleled diagnostic metrics-accuracy of 99.39%, recall of 98.80%, precision of 99.85%, and an F1 score of 99.32%-and thereby eclipsed extant computational methodologies. Feature map analyses substantiated the model's hierarchical feature extraction capabilities. This research elucidates a deep learning framework for computer-assisted ASD screening via fMRI, with transformative implications for early diagnosis and intervention.

    Abstract Introduction: In April 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its intention to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes and cigars. Decades of research support the premise a menthol ban will reduce initiation and disparities in tobacco-related disease among menthol smokers. The tobacco industry opposed such a policy and worked for decades to shape public opposition. Social media discourse can inform our understanding of public opinion about the proposed ban and guide communication strategies and policy implementation.
    Methods: This research employed a mixed-methods design to explore TikTok posts discussing the announced menthol ban. Using a TikTok web scraper to extract all content in the #mentholban hashtag (n=171), we coded for 11 themes, characterized content with descriptive statistics, and created a semantic network of co-occurring hashtags.
    Results: We found primarily negative attitudes towards the US ban announcement and a large volume of menthol "hacks" to circumvent the bans. Our semantic network analysis revealed strong co-occurrences between #mentholban and popularity-seeking hashtags. The metadata associated with each TikTok demonstrated that most posters in #mentholban are not "influencers" in the sense of having many followers, aside from a few niche organizations with multiple posts. We found that perceived political and racial motivations shaped posters' assessments of the menthol ban. Furthermore, we uncovered how individuals and organizational actors shaped menthol ban content on TikTok.
    Conclusion: Our study indicates targeted marketing from alternative menthol product companies and advocacy organizations. The latter of these organizations is more likely to saturate the TikTok landscape with multiple posts and strategic hashtags.
    Implications: This study pursued an exploration of tobacco policy discussion on TikTok, specifically related to the FDA proposed menthol ban. TikTok is newer platform and our study provides early evidence of policy discussion emerging there, including the types of accounts creating the content and their valence toward the policy.

    Abstract While actors in a population can interact with anyone else freely, social relations significantly influence our inclination toward particular individuals. The consequence of such interactions, however, may also form the intensity of our relations established earlier. These dynamical processes are captured via a coevolutionary model staged in multiplex networks with two distinct layers. In a so-called relationship layer, the weights of edges among players may change in time as a consequence of games played in the alternative interaction layer. As an reasonable assumption, bilateral cooperation confirms while mutual defection weakens these weight factors. Importantly, the fitness of a player, which basically determines the success of a strategy imitation, depends not only on the payoff collected from interactions, but also on the individual relationship index calculated from the mentioned weight factors of related edges. Within the framework of weak prisoner's dilemma situation, we explore the potential outcomes of the mentioned coevolutionary process where we assume different topologies for relationship layer. We find that higher average degree of the relationship graph is more beneficial to maintain cooperation in regular graphs, but the randomness of links could be a decisive factor in harsh situations. Surprisingly, a stronger coupling between relationship index and fitness discourage the evolution of cooperation by weakening the direct consequence of a strategy change. To complete our study, we also monitor how the distribution of relationship index vary and detect a strong relation between its polarization and the general cooperation level.

    Abstract The crankshaft manufacturing process primarily comprises machining, single jacket, and double jacket stages. These stages collectively produce substantial carbon emissions, which significantly impact the environment. Low-carbon energy development and humanity's future are closely related. To promote the sustainable development of crankshaft manufacturing enterprises and improve the production efficiency of crankshafts, research on sustainable collaborative scheduling problems in multi-stage mixed flow shop for crankshaft components is conducted. In addition, the transportation process of related workpieces in the crankshaft manufacturing process, which generally have a large mass, also produces substantial carbon emissions. This paper constructs a multi-objective integer optimization model based on the manufacturing process characteristics of crankshaft components, with minimizing the maximum manufacturing time and carbon emissions as optimization objectives. Considering the complexity of the problem, a comprehensive algorithm integrating moth-flame optimization and NSGA-III is used to solve the mathematical model. Through case experiments, the integrated algorithm is compared and analysed with four classic multi-objective optimization algorithms: NSGA-III, NSGA-II, MOEA/D, and MOPSO. The experiments demonstrate that the algorithm presented in this paper offers significantly enhanced optimization efficiency in solving the problem under study compared to other algorithms. Moreover, this paper compares multi-stage collaborative scheduling and non-collaborative scheduling in the crankshaft manufacturing process, ultimately demonstrating that collaborative scheduling is more conducive to the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises. The results indicate that the annual carbon emissions can reduce about 3.6 ton.

    Abstract Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, afflicting over 5 million people in the United States. There remains a lack of effective disease-- modifying treatments for AD beyond a few approved drugs that provide temporary symptomatic relief. Melatonin is an endogenous hormone mainly produced by the pineal gland that regulates circadian rhythms and possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. An expansive body of research over the past few decades has investigated melatonin as a promising therapeutic agent for AD based on its ability to target multiple pathophysiological processes implicated in AD progression. In this comprehensive review, we summarize extensive evidence from cellular and animal models that has uncovered the diverse mechanisms underpinning melatonin's neuroprotective efficacy against AD pathology. We also synthesize clinical studies examining melatonin's effects on AD progression and symptoms. Additionally, we discuss how melatonin's multimodal mechanisms, favorable safety profile, and ability to synergize with conventional therapies heighten its potential as an effective therapeutic strategy for AD. Rigorously designed clinical trials incorporating physiological biomarkers are warranted to definitively establish melatonin's disease-modifying effects. Nevertheless, the considerable preclinical data support further exploration of melatonin as a therapeutic agent for AD.
