    Abstract (1 → 4)-β-D-Xylans are the second most abundant plant biopolymers on Earth after cellulose. Although their structures have been extensively studied, and industrial applications have been found for them and their derivatives, they are still investigated due to the diversity of their structures and uses. In this work, hemicellulose fractions obtained previously with 1 M KOH from two species of woody bamboos, Phyllostachys aurea and Guadua chacoensis, were purified, and the structures of the glucuronoarabinoxylans (GAX) were studied by chemical and spectroscopic methods. In both cases, major amounts of α-L-arabinofuranose residues were linked to C3 of the xylose units of the backbone, and also α-D-glucuronic acid residues and their 4-O-methyl-derivatives were detected in minor quantities, linked to C2 of some xylose residues. Methylation analysis of the carboxyl-reduced derivative from GAX from P. aurea indicated the presence of terminal and 5-linked arabinofuranose units. NMR spectroscopy showed the presence of disaccharidic side chains of 5-O-α-l-arabinofuranosyl-L-arabinofuranose for the GAX from P. aurea, while for those of G. chacoensis, only single side chains were found. To the best of our knowledge, this disaccharide was not found before as side chain of xylans.

    Abstract Introduction: Adult attachment can be understood as a cognitive and emotional system concerning oneself and others, based on previous attachment experiences throughout life. This system automatically affects relationships with others. Because of its importance in the interpersonal domain, it has been studied on numerous occasions in research on intimate partner violence. The aim of this study was to obtain evidence of validity of the Adult Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ) in a sample of 331 men convicted of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW).
    Methods: The AAQ assesses adult attachment style in four dimensions that, together, yield four attachment categories. A psychometric analysis was performed, including reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analysis of the items, which ratified the factorial structure of the questionnaire. For a correct fit of the model, it was necessary to eliminate 4 of the items from the original scale.
    Results: A latent profile analysis was also carried out, which identified four attachment styles: secure, preoccupied/anxious, avoidant/dismissing and fearful. Reliability indices were adequate. In general, the attachment profiles obtained ranges and means similar to those found in the general population study. The distribution of attachment styles was not equal: 50.57% of the participants presented secure attachment, 4.57% avoidant/dismissing attachment, 36.9% preoccupied/anxious, and 8.57% fearful.
    Discussion: In conclusion, a valid and reliable instrument was determined based on the original AAQ scale to measure attachment in men convicted of IPVAW.

    Abstract Introduction: Men who assault their partners present deficits in the social skills necessary for adequate interpersonal interaction. Not all of them have the same difficulties, thus they do not constitute a homogeneous group. Various studies have proposed different typologies of abusers based on their sociodemographic characteristics, criminal history, intensity and extent of violent or psychopathological traits. The majority of these investigations have been conducted in community samples, prompting the question of their validity in samples of men convicted of gender violence. The aim of this study was to establish a typology of men convicted in Spain for a gender violences crimes.
    Methodology: A total of 365 men participated and were subdivided into three classes of abusers based on their childhood, family experiences with violence, criminal history, sexist attitudes and attitudes toward violence, intensity and type of violence, psychopathological state and attachment style.
    Results: Coinciding with the results found in other research, 30% of the participants were classified as generally violent. They engaged in severe forms of physical, psychological and sexual violence and were more likely to do so than the rest. Additionally, they are more likely to present psychopathological problems and an antisocial character. Twenty-one percent were classified as dysphoric/borderline. They are characterized by minor forms of psychological violence, borderline or depressive symptomatology and an anxious attachment style. The remaining 49% were classified as familial or normalized abusers. This group exhibits moderate attitudes toward violence and sexism, resulting in less psychological and physical aggression. They do not present psychopathological problems and are likely to present a secure attachment style.
    Discussion: It is argued that determining the psychological characteristics of each type of abuser would contribute to improving and adapting intervention protocols in Spain, leading to a significant improvement in the current issue of abuse.

    Abstract Seaweeds biosynthesize sulfated polysaccharides as key components of their cell walls. These polysaccharides are potentially interesting as biologically active compounds. Green macroalgae of the class Ulvophyceae comprise sulfated polysaccharides with great structural differences regarding the monosaccharide constituents, linearity of their backbones, and presence of other acidic substituents in their structure, including uronic acid residues and pyruvic acid. These structures have been thoroughly studied in the Ulvales and Ulotrichales, but only more recently have they been investigated with some detail in ulvophytes with giant multinucleate (coenocytic) cells, including the siphonous Bryopsidales and Dasycladales, and the siphonocladous Cladophorales. An early classification of these structurally heterogeneous polysaccharides was based on the presence of uronic acid residues in these molecules. In agreement with this classification based on chemical structures, sulfated polysaccharides of the orders Bryopsidales and Cladophorales fall in the same group, in which this acidic component is absent, or only present in very low quantities. The cell walls of Dasycladales have been less studied, and it remains unclear if they comprise sulfated polysaccharides of both types. Although in the Bryopsidales and Cladophorales the most important sulfated polysaccharides are arabinans and galactans (or arabinogalactans), their major structures are very different. The Bryopsidales produce sulfated pyruvylated 3-linked β-d-galactans, in most cases, with ramifications on C6. For some species, linear sulfated pyranosic β-l-arabinans have been described. In the Cladophorales, also sulfated pyranosic β-l-arabinans have been found, but 4-linked and highly substituted with side chains. These differences are consistent with recent molecular phylogenetic analyses, which indicate that the Bryopsidales and Cladophorales are distantly related. In addition, some of the Bryopsidales also biosynthesize other sulfated polysaccharides, i.e., sulfated mannans and sulfated rhamnans. The presence of sulfate groups as a distinctive characteristic of these biopolymers has been related to their adaptation to the marine environment. However, it has been shown that some freshwater algae from the Cladophorales also produce sulfated polysaccharides. In this review, structures of sulfated polysaccharides from bryopsidalean, dasycladalean, and cladophoralean green algae studied until now are described and analyzed based on current phylogenetic understanding, with the aim of unveiling the important knowledge gaps that still exist.

    Abstract Background: The deficits observed in the memory area are usually characteristic in patients with cognitive impairment and when we speak of Acquired Brain Damage. The study of memory disorders has been improving thanks to advances in the knowledge of the human memory system and taking into account biological and psychological considerations. Neuropsychology has focused, in recent years, on including the use of portable cameras, such as SenseCam, in the rehabilitation of memory by favoring, among other things, autobiographical memory. The main objective of the present study was to verify the benefits of using SenseCam in patients with memory disorders.
    Methods: To achieve this goal, a range of articles from PubMed, Medline, Mendeley, Web of Science and Science Direct were searched. Inclusion criteria were studied including people with memory issues using SenseCam technology. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded from analyses.
    Results: The total number of articles obtained from the different databases and consultation platforms was 207 studies. In the present work, a number of 7 studies were included for this systematic review meting the inclusion criteria.
    Conclusions: Patients with a memory issue using SenseCam showed several improvements when compare to a group a people using an alternative method.

    Abstract Edible films based on fruit and vegetable purees combined with different food-grade biopolymeric binding agents (e.g., pectin, gelatin, starch, sodium alginate) are recognized as interesting packaging materials that benefit from the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of biopolymers as well as the sensory and nutritional properties of purees. In the current contribution, edible antioxidant films based on pear juice and pregelatinized cassava starch were developed. In particular, the suitability of using pregelatinized cassava starch for the non-thermal production of these novel edible films was evaluated. In addition, the effects on the films' properties derived from the use of pear juice instead of the complete puree, from the content of juice used, and from the carbohydrate composition associated with the ripening of pears were all studied. The produced films were characterized in terms of their total polyphenol content, water sensitivity, and water barrier, optical, mechanical and antioxidant properties. Results showed that the use of pear juice leads to films with enhanced transparency compared with puree-based films, and that juice concentration and carbohydrate composition associated with the degree of fruit ripeness strongly govern the films' properties. Furthermore, the addition of pregelatinized cassava starch at room temperature discloses a significant and favorable impact on the cohesiveness, lightness, water resistance, and adhesiveness of the pear-juice-based films, which is mainly attributed to the effective interactions established between the starch macromolecules and the juice components.

    Abstract Guadua is a genus of woody bamboos, native to the American continent, which comprises economically important species. Cell wall polysaccharides from young shoots of Guadua chacoensis showed glucuronoarabinoxylans (GAX) as the major hemicellulosic components (65%, of the recovered carbohydrates by extraction with aqueous solutions), which were obtained in major quantities with 1 M KOH (molar ratio Xyl:Ara:GlcA, 100:28:8). AGP and pectin polymers, as well as mixed linkage glucans and xyloglucans were present in smaller amounts (16% and 15%, respectively). Alternative extraction of GAX with solutions of DMSO allowed the characterization of alkali labile substituents, in particular, acetyl groups, which were linked mainly to C3 or, to a lesser extent, to C2 of some of the xylose residues. Besides, small amounts of phenolic compounds, released by saponification, were detected, linked to C5 of some α-L-arabinofuranose units. These results could be relevant for their use as a new resource for the food industry.
