Abstract Rhizophora extracts have several potential biological activities, and their metabolites can be used in the pharmaceutical industry. Extracts of Rhizophora species obtained from mangroves have shown prospective activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to investigate the chemical profile of Rhizophora mangle leaves from fringe, basin, and transition mangrove zones and their bactericidal/bacteriostatic potential against S. aureus. R. mangle leaves were collected monthly in 2018 from litterfall in three different zones of the mangrove of Guaratiba State Reserve: fringe, basin, and transition. Extracts were prepared from the material collected in October and December for LC-HRMS/MS analysis, and dereplication was performed using a molecular library search and the classical molecular networking GNPS platform. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the aqueous extract of R. mangle against S. aureus were determined. No S. aureus growth was observed compared to the control for extracts collected from September to December. Different compounds were annotated in each region, yet a marked presence of phenolic compounds was noted, among them glycosylated flavonoid derivatives of quercetin and kaempferol. The results suggest bactericidal/bacteriostatic activity for extracts of R. mangle leaves collected in 2018 from three mangrove forest zones.

Abstract Large mammals, especially felids such as Mountain Lion, Puma concolor (Linnaeus, 1771), are disappearing from their original habitats, due to the loss of natural areas and hunting, especially in the metropolitan regions. In the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, P. concolor had not been observed for almost a century, despite the city having forest fragments as large as 10,000 ha. Here we present records that confirm the reappearance of this species in the city of Rio de Janeiro, where it has been considered extirpated.

Abstract Phthalates are the most common plasticizer compounds worldwide, providing flexibility to a wide array of plastic products. The inadequate disposal of these chemical residues causes their absorption and accumulation by plant species in contaminated environments. The absorption and accumulation of phthalates in the mangrove species Avicennia schaueriana (Acanthaceae) were monitored over one year. A total of 30 fresh and dried leaf extract samples were collected through the “serapilheira system”, in the Guaratiba Biological Reserve in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in three different regions of the Guaratiba mangrove forest: A (fringe), C (basin), and E (transition). Samples were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Bis-tridecyl phthalate was the main contaminant detected, and bis-isobutyl phthalate and bis-2-ethylhexyl phthalate were the major metabolites of the butanolic fraction obtained from the liquid-liquid partition of the ethanolic leaf extract. The observed chemical profile was rich in secondary metabolites, predominantly lupeol and α-amyrin. Exposure to these contaminants presents several risks to human health. This is the first work to confirm how the mangrove pollution process, through the accumulation of plastic contaminants in sediments and water, can directly affect the plant species and their biosynthesis.Capsule: This study shows how methods used in classical phytochemistry can highlight serious environmental pollution problems that affect plant biosynthesis and human health.

Abstract Objective: This clinical case report addresses the step-by-step of the application of a core-and-post system that uses a single resin composite material to fiber post cementation and core build-up in a maxillary left central incisor.
Clinical considerations: The literature reports several materials and methods for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth with coronal destruction that require an intra-radicular fiber post for the core build-up. The present case report describes a core-and-post or "monoblock" technique. A dual resin composite (Core-X Flow; Dentsply DeTrey) highly filled material and cement was used for luting the fiber post (Blue X-Post) and build-up the core structure in an easy application.
Conclusions: The "core-and-post" technique that uses a single material system protocol minimizes the material interfaces, steps of procedures, and chair-time in comparison to conventional techniques.
Clinical significance: The use of different materials for post cementation and core build-up requires more steps, which increases the chair-time and number of interfaces among the materials. Since the "monoblock" technique uses only one material, it can streamline the clinical procedures, thus, saving time and materials. Moreover, techniques based on core-and-post systems are easily applied, versatile, and esthetics, and can be applicable to posterior and anterior teeth.

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the influence of particle and air-abrasion on the surface characterization and shear bond strength (SBS) of a Y-TZP ceramic with a resin cement.
Materials and methods: Y-TZP specimens were air-abraded with 50 μm alumina particles; 120 μm alumina particles; 30 μm silica-coated alumina particles (Rocatec Soft); 110 μm silica-coated alumina particles (Rocatec Plus). Air-abrasion was performed before (BS); after (AS); before and after (BAS) zirconia sintering. Surface characterization included roughness (n = 10), wettability (n = 10), morphology (n = 2), and elemental composition (n = 2). For SBS (n = 11), composite resin discs were bonded to the air-abraded and silane-treated zirconia surface, with the resin cement RelyX ARC. Failure mode was determined. Roughness, wettability, and SBS data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with pairwise interaction and Tukey's test (α = 0.05).
Results: Air-abrasion performed with coarser particles at BS and BAS moments provided the highest roughness values, while the lowest roughness values were observed with particles combined with AS moment (p < 0.01). Rocatec Plus provided lower contact angle than the 120 μm alumina particles (p = 0.013), and BAS exhibited lower contact angle than BS (p = 0.002). The combinations 120 μm/BS and the silica-coated alumina particles/AS and /BAS showed the highest SBS (p < 0.05). The combination of each particle/BAS was statistically similar to the same particle/AS. Failure mode was 100% adhesive for all groups. The interaction particle size/air-abrasion moment determined the morphological pattern. Silicon was observed only in the Rocatec groups.
Conclusions: Roughness was influenced by the particle size and was higher when the zirconia was air-abraded in its green stage. The particle composition played an important role in the wettability and both studied air-abrasion moments provided similar wettability than the one in which air-abrasion is usually performed. The highest SBS values were observed in the three moments, by using certain particles for each moment.
