Abstract An acoustic model, trained on a significant amount of unlabeled data, consists of a self-supervised learned speech representation useful for solving downstream tasks, perhaps after a fine-tuning of the model in the respective downstream task. In this work, we build an acoustic model of Brazilian Portuguese Speech through a Transformer neural network. This model was pretrained on more than $800$ hours of Brazilian Portuguese Speech, using a combination of pretraining techniques. Using a labeled dataset collected for the detection of respiratory insufficiency in Brazilian Portuguese speakers, we fine-tune the pretrained Transformer neural network on the following tasks: respiratory insufficiency detection, gender recognition and age group classification. We compare the performance of pretrained Transformers on these tasks with that of Transformers without previous pretraining, noting a significant improvement. In particular, the performance of respiratory insufficiency detection obtains the best reported results so far, indicating this kind of acoustic model as a promising tool for speech-as-biomarker approach. Moreover, the performance of gender recognition is comparable to the state of the art models in English.

Abstract One of the main reasons to employ a description logic such as EL or EL++ is the fact that it has efficient, polynomial-time algorithmic properties such as deciding consistency and inferring subsumption. However, simply by adding negation of concepts to it, we obtain the expressivity of description logics whose decision procedure is {ExpTime}-complete. Similar complexity explosion occurs if we add probability assignments on concepts. To lower the resulting complexity, we instead concentrate on assigning probabilities to Axioms (GCIs). We show that the consistency detection problem for such a probabilistic description logic is NP-complete, and present a linear algebraic deterministic algorithm to solve it, using the column generation technique. We also examine and provide algorithms for the probabilistic extension problem, which consists of inferring the minimum and maximum probabilities for a new axiom, given a consistent probabilistic knowledge base.

Comment: An earlier version of this work has appeared at Franz Baader's festschrift. Here we detail the column generation method and present a detailed example

Abstract Purpose: Simultaneous membrane-based feeding and monitoring of the oxygen transfer rate shall be introduced to the newly established perforated ring flask, which consists of a cylindrical glass flask with an additional perforated inner glass ring, for rapid bioprocess development.
Methods: A 3D-printed adapter was constructed to enable monitoring of the oxygen transfer rate in the perforated ring flasks. Escherichia coli experiments in batch were performed to validate the adapter. Fed-batch experiments with different diffusion rates and feed solutions were performed.
Results: The adapter and the performed experiments allowed a direct comparison of the perforated ring flasks with Erlenmeyer flasks. In batch cultivations, maximum oxygen transfer capacities of 80 mmol L
Conclusion: The membrane-based feeding, an online monitoring technique, and the perforated ring flask were successfully combined and offer a new and promising tool for screening and process development in biotechnology.

Abstract In this work, we carried out a study about the use of attention-based algorithms to automate the categorization of Brazilian case law documents. We used data from the Kollemata Project to produce two distinct datasets with adequate class systems. Then, we implemented a multi-class and multi-label version of BERT and fine-tuned different BERT models with the produced datasets. We evaluated several metrics, adopting the micro-averaged F1-Score as our main metric for which we obtained a performance value of F1-micro=0.72 corresponding to gains of 30 percent points over the tested statistical baseline. Abstract The alarming fact is that approximately one out of every 10 of us will have a kidney stone during our lifetime. The increasing prevalence and associated costs of kidney stones have resulted in it being one of the most commonly encountered and impactful medical conditions. Contributing factors include, but are not limited to, diet, climate, genetics, medications, activity and underlying medical conditions. Symptoms generally parallel stone size. Treatment varies from supportive to procedural (invasive and non-invasive). Prevention remains the best way to avoid this condition especially given the high recurrence rate. First time stone formers require counselling regarding dietary adjustments. Certain risk factors ultimately require a more in-depth metabolic investigation, especially if stones are recurrent. Ultimately, management is defined by stone composition. Where appropriate, we review both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options. Pivotal to successful prevention is patient education and the encouragement of compliance with the appropriate regimen.

Abstract Cultivating microorganisms on solid agar media is a fundamental technique in microbiology and other related disciplines. For the evaluation, most often, a subjective visual examination is performed. Crucial information, such as metabolic activity, is not assessed. Thus, time-resolved monitoring of the respiration activity in agar cultivations is presented to provide additional insightful data on the metabolism. A modified version of the Respiration Activity MOnitoring System (RAMOS) was used to determine area-specific oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates and the resulting respiratory quotients of agar cultivations. Therewith, information on growth, substrate consumption, and product formation was obtained. The validity of the presented method was tested for different prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms on agar, such as Escherichia coli BL21, Pseudomonas putida KT2440, Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2), Saccharomyces cerevisiae WT, Pichia pastoris WT, and Trichoderma reesei RUT-C30. Furthermore, it is showcased that several potential applications, including the determination of colony forming units, antibiotic diffusion tests, quality control for spore production or for pre-cultures and media optimization, can be quantitatively evaluated by interpretation of the respiration activity.

Abstract We show that recent known advances in Computer Science have allowed us to enter in regions of data "imensity" that we thought were unreachable. Besides, formal and precise models of specific parts of the worls that we are building are increasingly detailed and allow us to simulate more accurately both human and natural phenomena. Paradoxically, we argue that this growth both of size and precision will take us to a Computer Science that is closer to humanization.
