Abstract Studying the origin of life is one of man's greatest achievements over the last sixty years. The fields of interest encompassed by this quest are multiple and interdisciplinary: chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, mathematics, geology but also statistics, atmospheric science, meteorology, oceanography, and astrophysics. Recent scientific discoveries, such as water on Mars and the existence of super-Earths with atmospheres similar to primordial Earth, have pushed researchers to simulate prebiotic conditions in explaining the abiotic formation of molecules essential to life. This collection of articles offers an overview of recent discoveries in the field of prebiotic chemistry of biomolecules, their formation and selection, and the evolution of complex chemical systems

Abstract The 2030 Agenda has among its key objectives the poverty eradication through increasing the level of education. A good level of education and investment in culture of a country is in fact necessary to guarantee a sustainable economy, in which coexists satisfactory levels of quality of life and an equitable distribution of income. There is a lack of studies in particular on the relations between some significant dimensions, such as education, culture and poverty, considering time lags for the measurement of impacts. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by focusing on the relationship between education, culture and poverty based on a panel of data from 34 European countries, over a 5-year period, 2015-2019. For this purpose, after applying principal component analysis to avoid multicollinearity problems, the authors applied three different approaches: pooled-ordinary least squares model, fixed effect model and random effect model. Fixed-effects estimator was selected as the optimal and most appropriate model. The results highlight that increasing education and culture levels in these countries reduce poverty. This opens space to new research paths and policy strategies that can start from this connection to implement concrete actions aimed at widening and improving educational and cultural offer.

Abstract This paper studies normalisation by evaluation for typed lambda calculus from a categorical and algebraic viewpoint. The first part of the paper analyses the lambda definability result of Jung and Tiuryn via Kripke logical relations and shows how it can be adapted to unify definability and normalisation, yielding an extensional normalisation result. In the second part of the paper the analysis is refined further by considering intensional Kripke relations (in the form of Artin glueing) and shown to provide a function for normalising terms, casting normalisation by evaluation in the context of categorical glueing. The technical development includes an algebraic treatment of the syntax and semantics of the typed lambda calculus that allows the definition of the normalisation function to be given within a simply typed metatheory. A normalisation-by-evaluation program in a dependently-typed functional programming language is synthesised.

Comment: This is a slight revision, with an implementation, of the full version, with proofs, of February 2003 for the extended abstract with the same title published in the Proceedings of the 4th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Principles and Practice of Declarative Programming (PPDP) in October 2002

Abstract Climate change, now the foremost global health hazard, poses multifaceted challenges to human health. This editorial elucidates the extensive impact of climate change on health, emphasising the increasing burden of diseases and the exacerbation of health disparities. It highlights the critical role of the healthcare sector, particularly anaesthesia, in both contributing to and mitigating climate change. It is a call to action for the medical community to recognise and respond to the health challenges posed by climate change.

Abstract Nucleic acids, phospholipids and other organic phosphates play central roles in biological pathways. n-Alkyl phosphates and their derivatives have been recognized as amphiphilic molecules for nearly two centuries. In the last 50 years, n-alkyl phosphate derivatives such as di-alkyl phosphates, mono-alkyl phosphatidyl ethanol amines and mono-alkyl phosphocholines have become predominant compounds with applications in different areas, from food chemistry to life science. The aim of this review is to summarize the most relevant progress made in the field of the synthesis of these molecules and to provide a concise perspective on the use of these amphiphiles as possible prebiotic membrane constituents. The first part of the review is dedicated to the analysis of the most relevant syntheses carried out in recent years with respect to those reported from the second half of the nineteenth century. The second part is dedicated to a description of the latest reports on prebiotic synthesis of mono-alkyl phosphates. In this part, the authors did not report the phosphorylation of other relevant biomolecules, such as nucleosides, which have been excellently reviewed elsewere.
