    Abstract Abstract Background Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement is one of the most frequent neurosurgical procedures and the operation is performed in a highly standardised manner under maintenance of highest infection precautions. Short operation times are important since longer duration of surgery can increase the risk for VPS complications, especially infections. The position of the proximal ventricular catheter influences shunt functioning and survival. With freehand placement, rates of malpositioned VPS are still high. Several navigation techniques for improvement of shunt placement have been developed. Studies comparing these techniques are sparse. The aim of this study is to prospectively compare ultrasound (US) guided to stereotactic navigated shunt placement using optical tracking with the focus on operation time and efficiency. Methods In this prospective randomised, single-centre, partially-blinded study, we will include all patients undergoing VPS placement in our clinic. The patients will be randomised into two groups, one group undergoing US-guided (US-G) and the other group stereotactic navigated VPS placement using optical tracking. The primary outcome will be the surgical intervention time. This time span consists of the surgical preparation time together with the operation time and is given in minutes. Secondary outcomes will be accuracy of catheter positioning, VPS dysfunction and need for revision surgery, total operation and anaesthesia times, and amount of intraoperative ventricular puncture attempts as well as complications, any morbidity and mortality. Discussion To date, there is no prospective data available comparing these two navigation techniques. A randomised controlled study is urgently needed in order to provide class I evidence for the best possible surgical technique of this frequent surgery.     Abstract This study evaluates the accuracy of drill guides fabricated in medical-grade, biocompatible materials for static, computer-aided implant surgery (sCAIS). The virtually planned drill guides of ten completed patient cases were printed ( n = 40) using professional (Material Jetting (MJ)) and consumer-level three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies, namely, Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), and Digital Light Processing (DLP). After printing and post-processing, the drill guides were digitized using an optical scanner. Subsequently, the drill guide’s original (reference) data and the surface scans of the digitized 3D-printed drill guide were superimposed to evaluate their incongruencies. The accuracy of the 3D-printed drill guides was calculated by determining the root mean square (RMS) values. Additionally, cast models of the planned cases were used to check that the drill guides fitted manually. The RMS (mean ± SD) values for the accuracy of 3D-printed drill guides were—MJ (0.09 ± 0.01 mm), SLA (0.12 ± 0.02 mm), FFF (0.18 ± 0.04 mm), and DLP (0.25 ± 0.05 mm). Upon a subjective assessment, all drill guides could be mounted on the cast models without hindrance. The results revealed statistically significant differences ( p < 0.01) in all except the MJ- and SLA-printed drill guides. Although the measured differences in accuracy were statistically significant, the deviations were negligible from a clinical point of view. Within the limits of this study, we conclude that consumer-level 3D printers can produce surgical guides with a similar accuracy to a high-end, professional 3D printer with reduced costs.

    Abstract Objectives Disease-specific, well-defined and validated clinical outcome measures are essential in designing research studies. Poorly defined outcome measures hamper pooling of data and comparisons between studies. We aimed to identify and describe pulmonary outcome measures that could be used for follow-up of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). Methods We conducted a scoping review by systematically searching MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews online databases for studies published from 1996 to 2020 that included ≥10 PCD adult and/or paediatric patients. Results We included 102 studies (7289 patients). 83 studies reported on spirometry, 11 on body plethysmography, 15 on multiple-breath washout, 36 on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), 57 on microbiology and 17 on health-related quality of life. Measurement and reporting of outcomes varied considerably between studies (e.g. different scoring systems for chest HRCT scans). Additionally, definitions of outcome measures varied (e.g. definition of chronic colonisation by respiratory pathogen), impeding direct comparisons of results. Conclusions This review highlights the need for standardisation of measurements and reporting of outcome measures to enable comparisons between studies. Defining a core set of clinical outcome measures is necessary to ensure reproducibility of results and for use in future trials and prospective cohorts.

    Abstract Abstract Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare heterogenous condition that causes progressive suppurative lung disease, chronic rhinosinusitis, chronic otitis media, infertility and abnormal situs. ‘Better Experimental Approaches to Treat Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia’ (BEAT-PCD) is a network of scientists and clinicians coordinating research from basic science through to clinical care with the intention of developing treatments and diagnostics that lead to improved long-term outcomes for patients. BEAT-PCD activities are supported by EU funded COST Action (BM1407). The second BEAT-PCD conference, and third PCD training school were held jointly in April 2017 in Valencia, Spain. Presentations and workshops focussed on advancing the knowledge and skills relating to PCD in: basic science, epidemiology, diagnostic testing, clinical management and clinical trials. The multidisciplinary conference provided an interactive platform for exchanging ideas through a program of lectures, poster presentations, breakout sessions and workshops. Three working groups met to plan consensus statements. Progress with BEAT-PCD projects was shared and new collaborations were fostered. In this report, we summarize the meeting, highlighting developments made during the meeting.
