    Abstract This contribution records the reproductive periods of ten dominant freshwater fish species from the Patos Lagoon and Guaíba Lake (Astyanax fasciatus, Cyphocharax voga, Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus jenynsii, Oligosarcus robustus, Hoplosternum littorale, Loricariichthys anus, Parapimelodus nigribarbis, Trachelyopterus lucenai, Pachyurus bonariensis). Data were derived from monthly samples in Casamento Lake (northern Patos Lagoon; Nov. 2002 to Apr. 2004) and Guaíba Lake (Jun. 2005 to May 2006). The reproductive period was determined according to the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI). Fish reproduction was identified during all months of the year. Oligosarcus jenynsii started reproduction in winter, but extended spawning to spring (early warming-water reproduction). Three species also presented reproduction during warming water months, but beginning in spring and finishing in summer (late warm-water reproduction): P. nigribarbis, T. lucenai and P. bonariensis. Three species presented relatively short reproduction periods on summer (spotted warm-water reproduction): H. malabaricus, H. littorale and L. anus, and only one species reproduces almost continuously during warmer waters (long-season warm-water reproduction): A. fasciatus. Finally, two other species presented a very distinct reproductive pattern, starting reproduction on late summer but increasing GSI values along autumn and winter (long-season cooling-water reproducers): C. voga and O. robustus.(AU)

    Abstract To describe a food-web structure is a main goal in any attempt to understand ecosystem functioning. In the present study, we analysed the isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) of primary producers and consumers in the large subtropical Mangueira Lake in southern Brazil. On the basis of the δ13C and δ15N values and analysis of stomach contents of several fish species, we provide a description of the food-web structure and trophic positions of the dominant fish species. Analysis of nitrogen isotope ratios indicated the existence of two consumer trophic levels. Isotopic signatures of primary consumers were compatible with those of producers, indicating a food web sustained by autochthonous carbon. Nevertheless, when food items were classified in larger groups by relative size and source, the combined analysis of isotopic signature and feeding preferences revealed a phylogenetically structured arrangement for the fish species of Mangueira Lake. This indicates that the main feeding niches are shared by taxonomically related species.

    Abstract Menticirrhus littoralis is an important sport and commercial fish species in southern Brazil. This paper aims to analyze the reproductive biology of the species in Rio Grande do Sul coastal waters. Captures were carried out at Cidreira's fishing pier (30º 08' S; 50º 11' W) located on the Northern Coast of Rio Grande do Sul, where sport-fishing takes place throughout the year. Sport fishermen using hook-and-line with different hook sizes and varied baits exclusively made the captures. A total of 807 individuals were obtained from June 1997 to May 1998. Sexual proportion was 0.67 female for each male (323 females and 484 males; chi2c = 32.120; DF=1; P<0.001). The smallest individual (total length) for captured animals was a male of 13 cm whereas the largest was a female of 46 cm. The minimum size (total length) for a mature female was 19.8 cm. The size at first maturation (L50) was 23 cm and females larger than 27 cm spawned at least once (L100). The reproductive period for M. littoralis is from September to March. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed a clear seasonal pattern. Mean ovarian weight was highest in November when it reached 5% of total body weight. Apparently, there is a size gradient for M. littoralis in the area. Larger individuals inhabit deeper water, and they move to the coast mainly for spawning.

    Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large‐scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

    Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

    Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.     Abstract O presente trabalho objetiva diagnosticar a pesca artesanal da comunidade de pescadores de Palmares do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, a qual exerce pressão de pesca sobre a porção nordeste da laguna dos Patos, especialmente na lagoa do Casamento. Para tal foi efetuado o acompanhamento diário do desembarque pesqueiro em Palmares do Sul entre março de 2002 e fevereiro de 2004. Efetuaram-se também amostragens mensais com redes de espera com malhas 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120 e 140 mm entre nós opostos com o objetivo de determinar-se a capturabilidade por malha de rede. As amostragens iniciaram em novembro de 2002 e se estenderam até abril de 2004. O acompanhamento do desembarque pesqueiro apresentou no primeiro ano avaliado (03/2002 a 02/2003) captura de 171,3 toneladas de pescado, enquanto no segundo ano (03/2003 a 02/2004) ocorreu um incremento significativo para 320,2 toneladas. Constatou-se a atividade pesqueira é voltada para 18 espécies; destas, cinco são as mais exploradas: Viola (Loricariichthys anus), Traíra (Hoplias malabaricus), Jundiá (Rhamdia quelen), Tainha (Mugil platanus) e Bagre-marinho (Genidens planifrons, G. barbus, G. genidens). Diagnosticou-se que a atividade da pesca artesanal é exercida, em média, por 89 pessoas, embora se tenha identificado que o segmento efetivamente profissional não deva ultrapassar 37 pescadores. Observa-se que há uma oscilação do número mensal de pescadores em atividade, o que sugere que nem todos os recenseados sobrevivem essencialmente desta atividade. O maior número de pescadores apresenta apenas um desembarque mensal registrado. O acompanhamento de desembarque apontou que o conjunto de pescadores, em sua maioria, comercializa um volume mensal de pescado entre 110 e 500 kg. Analisando a receita gerada pelo comércio de pescado, percebe-se que há uma pequena fração que consegue sobreviver essencialmente da pesca. O número de profissionais com rendimento superior a um salário mínimo é inferior ao valor total de pescadores mensalmente observados. As amostragens com rede de emalhe permitiram a captura de 22 espécies. Através das curvas de capturabilidade e tamanho da primeira maturação, identificou-se que a malha 70 mm entre nós opostos é adequada para preservar a ictiofauna local, seja ela acompanhante ou de interesse comercial. Um conjunto de sugestões adicionais para a gestão pesqueira regional é apresentado.

    Abstract Estimativas precisas do tamanho de primeira maturação (L50) são necessárias para políticas de preservação de recursos pesqueiros, sendo que diferentes abordagens têm sido propostas neste sentido. Neste trabalho aplicamos uma equação logística para estimativa do tamanho de primeira maturação a partir de dados de IGS. Para tal foram realizadas coletas mensais ao longo de dezoito meses (nov/2002 a abr/2004) na Lagoa do Casamento, braço nordeste da Laguna dos Patos, e doze meses (jun/2005 a mai/2006) no Lago Guaíba, em porção denominada Saco das Mulatas, empregando-se redes de espera de malhas diversificadas (30 metros de comprimento, malhas 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60 e 70 mm entre nós adjacentes, esforço de 36 horas/mês). O tamanho de primeira maturação (LMAT) de cada espécie analisada foi estimado através do ajuste de uma função logística modificada aos dados de comprimento total médio (LTOT) e IGS médio (IGSMED) através do algoritmo de Levenberg-Marquardt (SPSS 11. 5): IGSMED=IGSMIN+(IGSMAX-IGSMIN)/(1+exp(-Tax*(LTOT-LMAT))); onde IGSMED é o IGS médio para fêmeas em cada intervalo de classe de comprimento; IGSMIN é o IGS médio de fêmeas jovens; IGSMAX é o IGS médio de fêmeas adultas; Tax é a velocidade com que as fêmeas passam do estágio jovem para o estágio adulto; LTOT é o comprimento total médio de cada classe de comprimento e LMAT é o tamanho de primeira maturação. Para espécies com insuficiência amostral para ajuste da função acima, o tamanho de primeira maturação (LMIN) foi determinado como o comprimento total do menor indivíduo capturado com IGS igual ou superior a 30% do maior valor de IGS registrado para as fêmeas de cada espécie. O tamanho de primeira maturação estimado para Oligosarcus jenynsii foi de 16,2 cm (LMAT; EP=0,167). As fêmeas de Oligosarcus robustus iniciam a atividade reprodutiva aos 21,4 cm de comprimento total (LMAT; SE=0,463). Para Hoplias malabaricus a primeira maturação foi estimada em 13,9 cm (LMIN). Para as fêmeas de Cyphocharax voga o tamanho de primeira maturação foi determinado em 18,5 cm (LMAT; EP=0,738). Para Astyanax fasciatus a atividade reprodutiva inicia-se aos 12,2 cm de comprimento total (LMAT; EP=0,661). Para as fêmeas de Pimelodus maculatus a reprodução inicia-se aos 18,0 cm (LMIN) de comprimento total. Em Parapimelodus nigribarbis o tamanho de primeira maturação ocorre aos 8,0 cm de comprimento total (LMIN). Para as fêmeas de Hoplosternum littorale a reprodução inicia-se aos 14,1 cm de comprimento total (LMAT; EP=0,199). O tamanho de primeira maturação para Loricariichthys anus foi estimado em 27,0 cm (LMAT; EP=1,151). Para Pachyurus bonariensis a atividade reprodutiva tem início aos 17,2 cm de comprimento total (LMAT; EP=2,024). Finalmente, para as fêmeas de Trachelyopterus lucenai a primeira maturação foi estimada em 13,7 cm (LMAT; EP=0,537).

    Abstract To describe a food-web structure is a main goal in any attempt to understand ecosystem functioning. In the present study, we analysed the isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) of primary producers and consumers in the large subtropical Mangueira Lake in southern Brazil. On the basis of the δ13C and δ15N values and analysis of stomach contents of several fish species, we provide a description of the food-web structure and trophic positions of the dominant fish species. Analysis of nitrogen isotope ratios indicated the existence of two consumer trophic levels. Isotopic signatures of primary consumers were compatible with those of producers, indicating a food web sustained by autochthonous carbon. Nevertheless, when food items were classified in larger groups by relative size and source, the combined analysis of isotopic signature and feeding preferences revealed a phylogenetically structured arrangement for the fish species of Mangueira Lake. This indicates that the main feeding niches are shared by taxonomically related species.
