Abstract BACKGROUND: One quarter of the global disease burden could be avoided with management strategies for environmental risk factors such as air and water pollution, food contamination, injuries and poor road safety. Many decisions influencing health are made outside the health sector; thus, the joint consideration and implementation of health and environmental factors in the relevant policies are becoming increasingly important. MATERIALS AND METHODS: By means of a selective literature search, we identified important policy documents and selected research articles as a basis for the introduction and current discussion of the Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach. Parallels with the Environment in All Policies (EIAP) approach are debated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The consideration and reinforcement of environmental topics in HiAP and the link with health in the EiAP approach increase the chances of policies with mutually positive effects, especially with regard to the significance of social factors for health and the environment. The UN Sustainable Development Goals provide a good starting point for a joint strategy for reinforcing health and environmental aspects. Health and Environmental Impact Assessments are accepted procedures in many countries. The HiAP strategy implemented in South Australia provides a well-documented institutional approach to the integration and linkage of health and environmental issues. These examples can be used as well-established starting points for a definition of HiAP incorporating the equitable involvement of environmental issues. Barriers to this goal relate, for example, to the particular interests of the various participating sectors.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Nudges are used to alter lifestyles and thus curb the rise of non-communicable diseases. Physical activity is a core prevention strategy to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases. This paper aims to (1) give an overview of the scope of interventions using choice architecture techniques to promote physical activity at the population levels and (2) identify research gaps by analysing the different approaches in terms of class and type of intervention used. METHODS: A systematic electronic database search was combined with snowball citation sampling of a starter set of publications to search for studies published through October 2018 reporting interventions to promote physical activity at the population level using choice architecture techniques. The methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute for Scoping Reviews was applied. RESULTS: In all, 35 publications were included. Most of the interventions used point-of-choice prompts tested at railway stations, shopping malls and airports (N = 27). Eight studies were online studies. While all studies were aimed at the general population, details, if reported at all, were vague and basic. All studies focused on individual-level lifestyle behaviour. None of the studies attempted to alter population-based lifestyle behaviour. Online and “real-world” approaches were rarely combined. Neither, interventions targeting meso- and macro-level structures nor combinations of individual-level and specific meso- or macro-level interventions were found. CONCLUSION: Nudging is in principle an effective approach to promote physical activity within the general population. However, there are large gaps in research. Available opportunities have not yet been exhausted. Further research is needed that is explicitly based on behavioural insights and covering the full range of nudging approaches, particularly focussing on theoretical developments, practical feasibility tests and scale-up activities.

Abstract This paper reports on the European Graduate School in Addiction Research (ESADD), which contributes to the scientific education of PhD/MD addiction research students and promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and academic networking in Europe. ESADD is a two-year course, built first from a conceptual analysis of knowledge needs, then iteratively refined based on practical experiences. Its major components are six seminar weeks, homework assignments and an internship in a foreign research group. As part of an internal quality management system, comprehensive evaluations of the programme took into account goals and objectives of the seminar weeks, workloads, study materials, relevance and usefulness of acquired skills, and organisational issues. Assessments of lecturers evaluated their teaching performance and the relevance of their topics. Forty-two out of 45 participants from all over Europe completed one of the three courses carried out between 2008 and 2015. All reported that ESADD provided them with a broad overview of knowledge in the field, and 41 participants were satisfied with the quality of the seminar weeks. ESADD thus seems to be an effective way to educate PhD students from different research disciplines and to provide a comprehensive body of scientific knowledge and competencies on addiction-related research topics. Further ESADD enriches the higher education landscape in addiction education.

Institution Leibniz-Institut für Präventionsforschung und Epidemiologie
Abstract Regular physical activity (PA) is central to healthy ageing. However, only a minority of older adults currently meet the WHO-recommended PA levels. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the effectiveness of eHealth interventions promoting PA in older adults aged 55 years and above with either no intervention or a non-eHealth intervention (review registration: PROSPERO CRD42015023875). Eight electronic databases were searched to identify experimental and quasi-experimental studies examining the effectiveness of eHealth interventions for PA promotion in adults aged 55 years and above. Two authors independently selected and reviewed references, extracted data, and assessed study quality. In the search, 5771 records were retrieved, 20 studies met all inclusion criteria. Studies varied greatly in intervention mode, content, duration and assessed outcomes. Study quality ranged from poor to moderate. All interventions comprised tailored PA advice and the majority of interventions included goal setting and feedback, as well as PA tracking. Participation in eHealth interventions to promote PA led to increased levels of PA in adults aged 55 years and above when compared to no intervention control groups, at least in the short term. However, the results were inconclusive regarding the question of whether eHealth interventions have a greater impact on PA behavior among older adults than non-eHealth interventions (e.g., print interventions). eHealth interventions can effectively promote PA in older adults aged 55 years and above in the short-term, while evidence regarding long-term effects and the added benefit of eHealth compared to non-eHealth intervention components is still lacking.

Abstract Introduction: Brain-based explanations of addiction have become a prominent explanatory model in recent decades. Although opposing views have been published, there is no large-scale study of researchers' opinions, unlike for treatment staff, the public and affected individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to examine international addiction researchers' perspectives on: (i) brain-based explanations of addiction; (ii) the perceived dominance of the concept in science, society, treatment and among those affected; and (iii) researchers' general conception of addiction in terms of ontologies and causes.
Methods: A sample of 1440 international addiction researchers was compiled. Views were assessed online via LimeSurvey using a 'mixed methods light' approach (Likert-type scales, free-text fields). Qualitative content analyses of free-text comments complemented descriptive statistics.
Results: One hundred and ninety researchers participated (13.19% response). The classification of substance use disorders as brain diseases/disorders was shared by about 60% of the respondents. Approximately 80% considered it the dominant view in science, but fewer in treatment, society and affected persons. Approximately 75% found it an oversimplification, but regarded it as helpful for understanding substance use disorders. Altogether, various biological, psychological and social factors were considered causal. Comments indicated that an over-simplistic nature of brain-based explanations of addiction was viewed as particularly problematic.
Discussion and conclusions: A rejection of a simplistic view of addiction in favour of a multi-causal concept in which the brain plays a role seems to be the majority view of participating researchers. Therefore, the orientation of future research, treatment and support for addicted persons need to be reconsidered accordingly.

Abstract Tobacco use during and around pregnancy can significantly increase the risk of stillbirth, congenital disabilities, premature birth, and low-weight birth. To establish maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks for primary care and dental providers and to facilitate cross-national learning, this scoping review aims: 1) to analyze the body of literature on maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, and strategies at the international and national level; 2) to identify common core elements; and 3) to identify gaps in the literature, and propose future initiatives and policy development directions. A systematic database search based on the JBI methodology and corresponding PRISMA-ScR guidelines will be conducted from January 2015 to August 2023. Searches in different databases will be combined with an expert survey among the members of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) - Oral Health, Tobacco Control, and the Women, Adolescent, and Children's Working Groups to evaluate the search outcomes and add maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, or strategies. Using a systematic review tool to support the screening, two independent reviewers will screen the titles and abstracts of all articles, in order to include the relevant ones for full-text screening, and an independent third author will resolve conflicts, if there is any discrepancy between the two independent reviewers' search. After a full-text review, data extraction will be conducted for analysis. Descriptive analyses include the publication year, country, legal quality, and target group addressed. A narrative synthesis will describe the scope and content of the frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, and strategies. The scoping review will serve as a stepping-stone to creating a WFPHA policy resolution on tobacco prevention and cessation framework for women of childbearing age led by the WFPHA Oral Health, Tobacco Control and the Women, Adolescent, and Children's Working Group members. This WFPHA policy resolution 'Maternal Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Recommendations for Primary Care Providers and Dental Providers' will be forwarded to the WFPHA General Council and the General Assembly for approval and will be disseminated to the WFPHA public health association members. Ultimately, this recommendation will be used by each national public health association to consider integrating it into their maternal health strategy.
