Abstract Since its entry into force in February 2005, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has had many significant achievements. It is one of the most widely ratified treaties within the United Nations; its Conference of the Parties has adopted many high-quality implementation guidelines, and implementation of the policy guidance in the treaty and its guidelines have decreased tobacco consumption and prevalence. Despite the effectiveness of these measures, however, FCTC implementation has been highly uneven across countries. A medium-term strategic plan was launched to clearly articulate a small number of priority areas for action in order to accelerate the pace of progress-the

Abstract This study used an online survey distributed between January and March 2019 to adults residing in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) to investigate cat and dog owner practices. Of the 2385 respondents, 885 (37%) owned both cat/s and dog/s, while 652 (28%) and 609 (26%) owned cat/s only or dog/s only, respectively. Nine percent of respondents (n = 212) did not own a cat or dog when the survey was administered. Gaps were identified in the practices of NZ pet owners with regard to regular grooming, immunizations, and deworming treatments. It was also found that many pets, especially cats, were allowed to wander freely both inside and outside the house. Collectively, these gaps in practice raise parasitology and infection concerns which may impact negatively on animal welfare and may increase the prevalence of zoonotic diseases. This study also revealed the need to improve desexing practices, particularly in dogs. Respondents in the survey expressed the wish to have pets regardless of the financial strain they may impose, indicating that future research should focus on reducing the financial burden of pet ownership along with promoting positive pet ownership practices. Our findings suggest the need for better education resources about pet ownership which are easily accessible and target diverse populations. The findings of this study will aid in developing appropriate educational resources to promote animal welfare and increase pet-related knowledge among the NZ populace.

Abstract The dynamics of excited electronic states in self-assembled structures formed between silver(I) ions and cytosine-containing DNA strands or monomeric cytosine derivatives were investigated by time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy and quantum mechanical calculations. The steady-state and time-resolved spectra depend sensitively on the underlying structures, which change with pH and the nucleobase and silver ion concentrations. At pH ∼ 4 and low dC

Abstract We present a spatial testbed of simulated boundary data based on a set of very high-resolution census-based areal units surrounding Guadalajara, Mexico. From these input areal units, we simulated 10 levels of spatial resolutions, ranging from levels with 5,515-52,388 units and 100 simulated zonal configurations for each level - totalling 1,000 simulated sets of areal units. These data facilitate interrogating various realizations of the data and the effects of the spatial coarseness and zonal configurations, the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), on applications such as model training, model prediction, disaggregation, and aggregation processes. Further, these data can facilitate the production of spatially explicit, non-parametric estimates of confidence intervals via bootstrapping. We provide a pre-processed version of these 1,000 simulated sets of areal units, meta- and summary data to assist in their use, and a code notebook with the means to alter and/or reproduce these data.

Abstract Background: No standardized summative tools exist to assess competency in bedside procedures or provide residents and programs with summative feedback.
Objective: To provide competency-based procedure training and feedback to residents, we created a procedure competency committee (PCC). Here, we describe the PCC process, its impact on procedure training, and examine residents' attainment of competency in bedside procedures.
Design, setting, and participants: The PCC consisted of hospitalists and met twice annually to review resident procedure portfolios for three academic years 2019-2022 at a university-based internal medicine residency program. Residents were designated to one of the five competency levels; being able to participate, perform under supervision with assistance, perform under direct supervision (DS) without assistance, perform independently with indirect supervision (IS), and perform independently with IS and supervise others. We analyzed the probability of advancing competency levels with each additional procedure using multinomial logistic regression models.
Results: Of the 97 residents, 48 (49.5%) were women and 60 (62%) subsequently matched in procedure-oriented fields. More residents achieved IS level for paracentesis than for lumbar puncture (LP) or central venous catheterization (CVC) (62 vs. 25 and 37, respectively; p < .001). Each incremental procedure performed was associated with a higher chance of being advanced to IS group from the DS group; 1.31 times for paracentesis (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07, 1.60; p < .008), 1.83 times for LP (95% CI = 1.35, 2.47; p = .0001), and two times for CVC (95% CI = 1.32, 3.05; p = .001).
Conclusion: The PCC provided competency-based assessment of a resident's procedural skills and may be used to assess the impact of curriculum changes.

Abstract Eumelanin is a ubiquitous biological pigment that rapidly and efficiently deactivates excited states created by UV or visible radiation. Paradoxically, photoirradiation of eumelanin also generates radicals and harmful reactive oxygen species, but the relationship between these pathways and excited-state deactivation is uncertain. Here, greatly expanding the excitation tuning range (225-620 nm) and probing window (400-1500 nm) in femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of the synthetic eumelanin, DOPA melanin, enables the detection of photogenerated radials with ultrafast time resolution for the first time. Despite its heterogeneous nature, the transient absorption signals can be modeled by two spectral components assigned to solvated electrons and photogenerated radicals. Radical absorbance measured several nanoseconds after excitation increases exponentially with increasing photon energy, matching the trend in radical yields measured in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments. Spectral modeling of the transient signals reveals two radical generation mechanisms: (1) photoionization by UV light; and (2) photoinduced charge transfer among eumelanin chromophores by UVA and visible wavelengths capable of reaching the pigment in skin. Concurrent ultrafast relaxation and radical generation underlie the ability of eumelanin to be both photoprotective and photodamaging, and the branching between these pathways likely depends on the wavelength of the absorbed light.
