Abstract At the beginning of July 2020, in Ecuador, as in most of the countries of the region, started loosening emergency lockdown restrictions designed to tackle COVID-19 pandemic. In Ecuador, the governmental discourse drew upon the illustrative figure of colours in the traffic lights: high-risk zones depicted as red; the colour yellow to denote control over the pandemic and green delineating lower risk zones. Initially, Ecuador was one of the countries with the highest incidence of COVID-19 in Latin America but with the progressive expansion of the pandemic in the region, other countries such as Brazil, Peru and Chile overtook Ecuador in terms of incidences of COVID per 100,000 people, whilst United States became the country where the virus spread the most.

Abstract Abstract Understanding the electronic properties modulation in graphene/tungsten disulfide (G-WS2) at different interlayer angles is essential for promising building blocks of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures. G-WS2 heterostructures with four different interlayer angles are studied using periodic first-principles calculations and an unfolding method to decipher the supercell crowded-band structure. Electronic mini-gaps of different sizes, band splittings, and band hybridizations are identified because of the interactions between out-of-plane orbitals from both layers. These electronic changes are modulated depending on the interlayer angle in a given energy window and space region. At the same time, the replicas emerging because of the superperiodic potential associated with moiré patterns also modify such electronic alterations, inducing new electronic repulsions or avoided crossings. Therefore, the number of mini-gaps as well as their energy values and positions are intrinsically related to the interlayer angle. Finally, it is anticipated that these results might be essential for designing the electronic properties of 2D heterostructures.

Abstract RESUMEN Introducción y objetivos: La cardiopatía isquémica y la enfermedad mental coexisten a menudo.

Abstract ABSTRACT Introduction and objectives: Coronary artery disease and mental health disorders are often coexistent. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often used in this context but have been associated with an increased risk of bleeding due to platelet dysfunction. Previous studies have assessed this risk in patients treated with clopidogrel-based dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with contradictory results. However, there is no data regarding the use of SSRIs and potent P2Y12 inhibitors or triple antithrombotic therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of SSRIs on bleeding outcomes after PCI in patients treated with clopidogrel, prasugrel or ticagrelor-based DAPT or triple antithrombotic therapy. Methods: Retrospective study including all patients undergoing PCI at a high-volume center during 2018. Patients on SSRIs were propensity-score-matched on a 1:1 ratio with patients naive to SSRIs adjusting for the baseline differences. The primary endpoint was major bleeding (BARC type 3 or 5 bleeding) at the 1-year follow-up. Secondary endpoints were a composite of major/non-major clinically relevant bleeding (BARC type 2, 3 or 5 bleeding), and a composite of major adverse cardiovascular events. Results: Out of a total of 1063 patients treated with PCI during the study period, 1002 met the selection criteria, and 139 (13.9%) were on SSRIs. The latter had a higher bleeding risk before matching [PRECISE-DAPT, 16 [10-24] vs 13 [9-21]; P = .040]. No differences were reported in major bleeding (2.9% vs 2.9%, P = .991), major/non-major clinically relevant bleeding (2.9% vs 7.2%, P = .120) or in major adverse cardiovascular events (7.9% vs 7.9%, P = .979) in patients treated with SSRIs. Conclusions: The use of SSRIs was frequent in patients treated with PCI, and although it was a marker of a higher bleeding risk at baseline, this was not associated with an additional ...

Abstract This study describes the effects that Cu supplementation of late-gestating and lactating females (hinds) of Iberian red deer fed a balanced diet have on milk production, composition, and somatic cell count (SCC). Experimental hinds ( n = 9) were subcutaneously injected every 42 days with Cu (0.83 mg Cu/kg body weight) from day 202 of gestation until the end of lactation (week 18). Control hinds ( n = 8) were injected with a physiological saline solution with the same volume and at the same frequency as the experimental group. Copper supplementation decreased the SCC from 1.64 to 1.36 log 10/mL ( p = 0.003) and modified the milk mineral profile. In particular, milk from hinds supplemented with Cu had more Ca ( p = 0.02), Mg ( p = 0.06), and K ( p = 0.03) than milk from control hinds. However, Cu supplementation did not influence the Cu content of milk. Therefore, it can be concluded that Cu supplementation of hinds fed a balanced diet from late-gestation to the end of lactation could be a good strategy to reduce SCC and modify the mineral profile of milk increasing its Ca content.

Abstract Abstract Poly-ADP-ribose polymerases (PARPs) are involved in the regulation of important cellular processes, such as DNA repair, aging and apoptosis, among others. They have been considered as promising therapeutic targets, since human cancer cells carrying BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations are highly sensitive to human PARP-1 inhibitors. Although extensive work has been carried out with the latter enzyme, little is known on bacterial PARPs, of which only one has been demonstrated to be active. To extend this limited knowledge, we demonstrate that the Gram-positive bacterium Clostridioides difficile CD160 PARP is a highly active enzyme with a high production yield. Its phylogenetic analysis also pointed to a singular domain organization in contrast to other clostridiales, which could be due to the long-term divergence of C. difficile CD160. Surprisingly, its PARP becomes the first enzyme to be characterized from this strain, which has a genotype never before described based on its sequenced genome. Finally, the inhibition study carried out after a high-throughput in silico screening and an in vitro testing with hPARP1 and bacterial PARPs identified a different inhibitory profile, a new highly inhibitory compound never before described for hPARP1, and a specificity of bacterial PARPs for a compound that mimics NAD+ (EB-47).
