Abstract Reactive skin decontamination lotion (RSDL) is a Health Canada approved product used by the Canadian Armed Forces for removal and inactivation of toxic chemicals on skin. Although it is considered very safe when used as directed, questions have been raised regarding whether topical RSDL in the medical setting will react exothermically with antiseptic compounds on the casualty's epidermis that could result in thermal burns. Benchtop experiments were conducted to investigate reactivity of RSDL with various antiseptic compounds or hemostatic agents. Temperature changes were closely monitored in three different volume ratios, 1:10, 1:1, and 10:1 over a time course of 16 minutes. Chlorine based bleaches versus RSDL were included as a positive control and were the only combination that exhibited a significant exothermic reaction capable of causing minor thermal burns. RSDL was also evaluated with antiseptic solution applied to swine epidermal tissue without observation of visual irritation; then in lacerated skeletal muscle tissue which resulted in no measured temperature change. The conclusion of this study is that antiseptics and hemostatic agents can be used as required on a patient decontaminated with RSDL as no exothermic reaction will occur.

Abstract To glean accurate information from social networks, people should distinguish evidence from hearsay. For example, when testimony depends on others' beliefs as much as on first-hand information, there is a danger of evidence becoming inflated or ignored as it passes from person to person. We compare human inferences with an idealized rational account that anticipates and adjusts for these dependencies by evaluating peers' communications with respect to the underlying communication pathways. We report on three multi-player experiments examining the dynamics of both mixed human-artificial and all-human social networks. Our analyses suggest that most human inferences are best described by a naïve learning account that is insensitive to known or inferred dependencies between network peers. Consequently, we find that simulated social learners that assume their peers behave rationally make systematic judgment errors when reasoning on the basis of actual human communications. We suggest human groups learn collectively through naïve signaling and aggregation that is computationally efficient and surprisingly robust. Overall, our results challenge the idea that everyday social inference is well captured by idealized rational accounts and provide insight into the conditions under which collective wisdom can emerge from social interactions.

Abstract Weight regain or inadequate weight loss following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass poses a significant clinical challenge. Our objective was to evaluate various revisional techniques for addressing weight regain and insufficient weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass through a systematic review and meta-analysis. We performed a literature search (in PubMed and Embase) on revisional interventions in collaboration with a medical information specialist. Measured outcomes included body mass index at intervention, total weight loss during follow-up, and complications. Random effects models were used to determine pooled effect size and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Thirty-nine studies were included: four studies reported on argon plasma coagulation, four studies on transoral outlet reduction, nine studies on transoral outlet reduction + argon plasma coagulation, four studies on pouch/gastrojejunal anastomosis revision, five on laparoscopic gastric banding, two studies on laparoscopic gastric banding + pouch resizing, 10 on distalization-RYGB, and one on duodenal switch. All techniques resulted in short-term clinically relevant weight loss. Endoscopic procedures had a short follow-up and resulted in modest and temporary weight loss. Surgical revision techniques were successful for weight loss in longer term follow-up, at the expense of high complication rates.

Abstract L-Carnitine is a key metabolite in the energy metabolism of eukaryotic cells, functioning as a shuttling molecule for activated acyl-residues between cellular compartments. In higher eukaryotes this function is essential, and defects in carnitine metabolism has severe effects on fatty acid and carbon metabolism. Carnitine supplementation has been associated with an array of mostly beneficial impacts in higher eukaryotic cells, including stress protection and regulation of redox metabolism in diseased cells. Some of these phenotypes have no obvious link to the carnitine shuttle, and suggest that carnitine has as yet unknown shuttle-independent functions. The existence of shuttle-independent functions has also been suggested in

Abstract This study investigates a hypothesized positive relationship between the number and strength of network ties and the performance of wineries in emerging production regions, which may face different challenges than wineries found in well-established regions. Results corroborate expectations that greater ties to competitors and firms in related tourism food and lodging sectors bolster performance. (JEL Classification: Q130)

Abstract Weight failure after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is frequently observed. Consensus on the most effective treatment is lacking. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess revisional strategies for weight regain (WR) or insufficient weight loss (IWL) following SG. The included studies reported on endoscopic gastroplasty (ESG), re-sleeve gastrectomy (re-SG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass (SADI), and duodenal switch (DS). All techniques resulted in clinically relevant weight loss. Although our data suggest that revisional OAGB was the most effective procedure, the lack of direct comparisons precludes strong conclusions. All procedures were feasible but differed regarding complication rates. Choice of procedure is depending on patient's characteristics and surgeons' expertise.

Abstract Effects of kanamycin on pollen germination and tube growth of pollen from non-transformed plants and from transgenic tomato plants containing a chimaeric kanamycin resistance gene were determined. Germination of pollen was not affected by the addition of kanamycin to the medium in both genotypes. Kanamycin, however, severely affected tube growth of pollen from non-transformed plants, while pollen from plants containing the chimaeric gene were less sensitive and produced significantly longer tubes at kanamycin concentrations between 200-400 mgl-1. Apparently, this resistance for kanamycin correlates with the expression of the chimaeric gene during male gametophytic development.
