Abstract A new labrid fish, Terelabrus zonalis sp. nov., the fourth species of the genus, is described on the basis of two specimens collected from the Philippines. The new species is characterized by 44 longitudinal series scale rows, 42 pored lateral-line scales, 11-12 gill rakers (including rudiments), the main supratemporal sensory canal with 8 branches posteriorly, the area bounded by the main supratemporal and postotic sensory canals (dorsal view) with 3 scale rows, the least distance between the orbit anteroventral margin and interopercle 7.0% of standard length and 18 faint silver vertical bands on the body in preserved specimens. An underwater photograph of T. dewapyle is reported as the first record of the species from the Philippines. A key to species of Terelabrus is provided.

Abstract The razorfish Iniistius jacksonensis (Ramsay 1881) is redescribed based on 10 specimens, including adult individuals, from eastern Australia. A second Australian species, Iniistius opalus sp. nov. is described based on 16 specimens from northern waters. Both species can be distinguished from other congeners in having a broad band of small scale rows on the cheek, a single small scale below the eye, first two dorsal-fin spines short, their length similar to those of other spines of dorsal fin, central gill-raker of lower limb of first gill arch with a single branch, greater body depth [33.6–41.5% standard length (SL) in Iniistius jacksonensis, versus 33.5–39.2% SL in I. opalus sp. nov.], and several small blotches on the anal-fin base. The new species can be distinguished from I. jacksonensis by its 10 scale rows below lateral line, four branches on central gill-raker of first upper limb of gill arch (vs. 2 branches in latter), greater head length [32.9–36.0% (mean 34.3%) vs. 29.6–32.1% (31.2%) SL], pre-pectoral-fin length [29.8–32.5% (31.2%) vs. 26.5–29.9% (28.5%) SL], orbit diameter [6.1–7.3% (6.8%) vs. 5.0–6.8% (5.8%) SL] and postorbital length [14.9–18.4% (16.8%) vs. 13.6–16.2% (14.9%) SL], and small blotches on head (vs. no blotches).

Abstract A new labrid fish Terelabrus flavocephalus sp. nov., the third species of the genus, is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the Republic of the Maldives. The new species is characterized by 46 scale rows in longitudinal series; 44 pored lateral-line scales; 13 gill rakers, including rudiments; main supratemporal sensory canal (STC) with 9 branches posteriorly; areas bounded by STC and postotic sensory canals (dorsal view) with embedded scales; least distance between anteroventral margin of orbit and maxilla 0.4 % of standard length; no red blotches superimposed on or extending onto midlateral red stripe; no yellow stripe on dorsal fin when fresh; a vivid yellow stripe extending from below the anterior margin of the orbit to preopercle and a vivid yellow blotch or band on the lower part of the opercle when fresh; a distinct black stripe from the center of the upper lip through the eye to opercular margin in preservation.

    2015  Volume 4040, Issue 5, Page(s) 559–568

Abstract A new labrid fish Terelabrus dewapyle sp. nov. is described as the second species of the genus, on the basis of five specimens collected from southern Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji in depths of 72-92 m. The sole paratype of T. rubrovittatus Randall & Fourmanoir 1998 is herein identified as T. dewapyle and designated as a paratype of the latter. The new species can be distinguished from T. rubrovittatus by the following characters: lower number of scale rows in the longitudinal series (41 or 42 vs. 45-48 in the latter), fewer pored lateral-line scales (39 or 40 vs. 43-45), and fewer gill rakers (12 or 13 vs. 14 or 15); a broader space between the anteroventral margin of the orbit and the maxilla [least distance 1.2-3.7% (mean 2.5%) SL vs. 0.5-2.3% (1.6%)]; no red blotches on the midlateral red stripe in adults and young (vs. 8-10 red blotches superimposed on midlateral red stripe in adults); no yellow band on the dorsal fin (vs. broad vivid yellow band submarginally on the dorsal fin in adults, pale yellow band in young); a vivid yellow (vs. white) space between the upper and midlateral red stripes; and a black blotch superimposed on the midlateral red stripe on the opercle in young, the black blotch fading with growth (vs. black blotch absent or indistinct).

Abstract A new species of labrid fish Oxycheilinus samurai sp. nov. is described on the basis of five specimens from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Panay Island, the Philippines. The new species is most similar to the Indo-West Pacific species Oxycheilinus orientalis in having a slender compressed body, 12 pectoral-fin rays, a blackish blotch around the anterior portion of the lateral-line anterior series, and a dark blotch basally on the membrane between the first and second dorsal-fin spines. However, O. samurai can be distinguished from O. orientalis by the following combination of characters: gill rakers 4 + 7–8; snout rounded with maximum circumference 49.8–63.5 % of standard length (SL); interorbital width 7.7–9.2 % of SL; caudal-peduncle depth 13.8–15.3 % of SL; posterior margin of caudal fin white; black or dark red area just before white posterior margin of caudal fin; poorly defined blackish blotches on inner surface of opercle in preserved specimens.
