Abstract The intestines have been considered the "forbidden organ" for years, and intestinal failure became the last organ failure recognized as such in the medical field. The impossibility of providing adequate nutritional support, turned these patients into recipients of just palliative comfort. In the 1960's, parenteral nutrition appeared as the most reasonable replacement therapy, but the initial success obtained with clinical kidney, heart, liver, lung and pancreas transplantation served as background to explore intestinal transplantation. The first clinical report of an isolated intestinal transplant was done by Richard Lillihei in 1967; in 1983, Thomas Starzl, performed the first multi visceral transplant, and in 1990, David Grant performed the first combined liver-intestinal transplant in an adult recipient in Canada. Since then, advances in immunosuppressive therapies and surgical innovations have allowed not only a continuous increase in indications, but also a worldwide application of all procedures, bringing clinical intestinal transplantation to reality. In this historical account, the most important contributions have been summarized, thus describing the steady progress, expansion and novelties developed over the last 56 years, since the first attempt. Clinical intestinal transplantation remains a complex and evolving field; ongoing research and technological advancements will continue shaping its future.

Title translation The formation of a new medical discipline: psychiatry in Austria in the 19th century.
Abstract The first psychiatric chairs and university departments of psychiatry in Austria were founded in Vienna and Graz in 1870: hence they celebrate their 150th anniversary this year 2020. These foundations represent a peak in the development of psychiatry as a scientific medical discipline. It is the aim of this paper to sketch that step by step development in its connection with the development of care institutions of the time and with reference to important personalities in the field. Vienna-as the metropole of the state and the most prominent place in the field-is taken as an example. One can distinguish four developmental periods: (1) The establishment of care institutions (asylums), at first without an own medical staff and unqualified male and female keepers (late 18th century up to early 19th). (2) The growing independance of these institutions-in Vienna the 'Tower of Fools'-and the emergence of 'alienists' who began to reflect on their activities and to share their experiences on academic grounds and the publication of a first Austrian textbook (1st half of 19th century). (3) From the 1850s on several alienists habilitated, partly with special emphasis on forensic psychology or cerebral anatomy and physiology, and developed a systematic academic teaching, again with a new 'modern' textbook, in some connection with a new care institution, and the foundation of a scientific association of psychiatry and forensic psychology in 1868. (4) An early activity of that association was to call for the institution of a chair and a university department of psychiatry within the asylum, both realised in 1870.

Title translation The anticipatory illusion, key to child development.
Abstract The representation that parents have of their child has an impact on their child's future. Similarly, what the therapist understands of his patient has an impact on the therapeutic process. Through the presentation of clinical situations put into perspective with theoretical elements, it is possible to propose a model of understanding of these effects via the concept of anticipatory illusion.

Title translation From vague anguish to the face of the monster, the experience of a sibling group.
Abstract For two years Damien took part in the sibling group at the medico-social action centre in Ivry-sur-Seine where his sister is cared for. A look back at the boy's development through the presentation of some of his drawings and the stories he has told about them. It seems to us essential to welcome the effects of the psychological shock of the families, induced by the handicap, and for this reason the siblings' group offers itself as a support to the narrative processes.

Abstract The management of the coronavirus pandemic required huge worldwide vaccination efforts. In this endeavour, healthcare workers faced the twofold challenge of reaching remote areas, and persuading people to take the vaccine. As it happens, this is nothing new in the history of medicine. Health workers may indeed continue to take inspiration from Francisco Xavier Balmis, a Spanish physician of the 19th century who realised the importance of Jenner's vaccine against smallpox, and led a successful expedition to administer the vaccines in the Spanish colonial possessions of the Western hemisphere and Asia. This article presents a biographical sketch of Balmis, focusing on his expedition.
