    Abstract Maternally Expressed at 31B (Me31B), an evolutionarily conserved ATP-dependent RNA helicase, plays an important role in the development of the germline across diverse animal species. Its cellular functionality has been posited as a translational repressor, participating in various RNA metabolism pathways to intricately regulate the spatiotemporal expression of RNAs. Despite its evident significance, the precise role and mechanistic underpinnings of Me31B remain insufficiently understood. This article endeavors to comprehensively review historic and recent research on Me31B, distill the major findings, discern generalizable patterns in Me31B's functions across different research contexts, and provide insights into its fundamental role and mechanism of action. The primary focus of this article centers on elucidating the role of Drosophila Me31B within the germline, while concurrently delving into pertinent research on its orthologs within other species and cellular systems.

    Abstract The application of polyphenols in dairy products is becoming more widespread due to the rich protein content of dairy products reacting with polyphenols. Many studies have pointed to the positive effects of polyphenol-protein binding on dairy products. This article illustrated the mechanisms of how polyphenols react with proteins. The effects of the combination of the polyphenols and protein were described in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, as well as the effects on food properties. Moreover, specific examples of the use of polyphenols in dairy products will also be proposed. Importantly, based on the reported findings, future processes that exploit and develop this interaction can be considered to enable the targeting of polyphenols and proteins in dairy products to secure a range of industrial benefits.

    Abstract E-waste production is exploding as a result of rising demand for electronics and a faster rate of replacement. A crucial, yet unresolved issue is how to encourage cooperation among primary agents in the recycling of e-waste. To examine a multi-agent collaborative model of e-waste recycling among local governments, producers, and consumers, this research employs the techniques of evolutionary games and system dynamics. Evolutionary games are used to analyze the strategy choice results, while system dynamics are adopted to depict the decision-making processes. Overall, we find that rewards and penalties affect the stability and efficiency of the collaborative model of e-waste recycling and that the greater the correlation between the rewards-and-penalties mechanism and the strategies, the more stable the model is. Specifically, the results show that: (1) static rewards-and-penalties mechanism is likely to breed mutants and thus is not conducive to stable cooperation; (2) dynamic rewards-and-penalties mechanism can inhibit the instability of e-waste recycling model, but only 60% of producers are willing to build an e-waste recycling system; (3) dynamic rewards-and-penalties optimizing mechanism can ensure that producers and consumers wholeheartedly work for e-waste recycling consistently without local governments regulation; (4) according to the sensitivity analysis, increasing the amount of rewards and penalties can facilitate faster evolution of collaboration in the e-waste recycling system. Finally, this study makes implications for promoting efficiency and stability in e-waste recycling among local governments, producers, and consumers.

    Abstract The management of industrial solid waste (ISW) and promoting sustainable circular development of the industrial economy is an urgent priority today. Therefore, this article constructs a sustainable circular model of 'generation-value-technology' of ISW management through the lens of industrial added value (IAV) and technology level. Also, the importance of the role of government is considered in the model. Based on actual data of China, this article simulates the future trend of the model using a system dynamics approach. The chief findings of the study are as follows: (1) under the current policy, China's future industrialization is increasing and the technological level of industrial enterprises is rising, but this is accompanied by a climb in ISW generation. (2) The win-win situation of ISW decrease and IAV increase can be achieved through enhanced information disclosure, technology innovation and government incentives. (3) Government subsidy should be oriented towards supporting technology innovation in industrial enterprises while reducing the proportion of incentives for ISW management results. Based on the results, this study proposes targeted policy implications for government and industrial enterprises.

    Abstract Depression is the most prevalent mental disorder, affecting more than 300 million adults worldwide each year, which can lead to serious economic and social problems. Antidepressants are usually the first-line treatment for depression, however, traditional antidepressants on the market have the disadvantage of low remission rates and may cause side effects to patients, therefore, the current focus in the field of depression is to develop novel therapeutic agents with high remission rates and few side effects. In this context, the antidepressant effects of natural compounds have received attention. Baicalin (baicalein-7-O-glucuronide) and its aglycone baicalein (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone) are flavonoid compounds extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis. Although lacking the support of clinical data, they have been shown to have significantly promising antidepressant activity in many preclinical studies through various rodent models of depression. This paper reviews the antidepressant effects of baicalin and baicalein in experimental animal models, with emphasis on summarizing the molecular mechanisms of their antidepressant effects including regulation of the HPA axis, inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress, reduction of neuronal apoptosis and promotion of neurogenesis, as well as amelioration of mitochondrial dysfunction. Controlled clinical trials should be conducted in the future to examine the effects of baicalin and baicalein on depression in humans.

    Abstract Carbon-neutral growth is a crucial long-term climatic aim in the context of global warming. This paper introduces complex network theory and explores its potential application to achieve this goal. Specifically, we investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of nodes and sources in the ecological network, and examine whether a relationship exists between the topological index of network nodes and the landscape pattern index of ecological source areas. We also determine the contribution of nodes to the carbon stock of the entire network by exploring the correlation between the carbon stock of nodes and sources to develop an optimization strategy based on the synergistic effect of node-source carbon enhancement. Finally, we test the effect of network optimization through robustness. Our results show that: (1) The correlation topological feature index analysis reveals that the degree distribution of the node network's topological characteristics becomes dispersed and modular, exhibiting the characteristics of small-world networks according to a large clustering coefficient. The heterogeneity and extent of ecological source landscapes have increased by modularity index but remain distributed and locally fragmented; (2) According to correlation analysis, by enhancing the eccentricity of the node topology, the patch cohesion index (COHESION) of the ecological source site can maximize the contribution of the node to the enhancement of the carbon stock benefits of the source site; (3) According to the tests on the robustness of nodes and edges and the robustness of network links, network stability is improved and carbon sink capacity is enhanced. Simultaneously, the restoration and rejuvenation of ecological space through national ecological construction projects can effectively improve the carbon sink within the organized region, contributing to the carbon neutrality aim. This research gives scientific and quantifiable references for potential ecological construction projects for sustainable cities and the optimization of urban ecological space structure.

    Abstract Aim: Adolescent suicide is a major public health concern, and modifiable risk factors associated with adolescent suicide remain poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the association between screen time and overweight/obesity and self-perceived overweigh and suicidality in adolescents.
    Methods: Adolescents from the United States Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) between 2013 and 2019 were included in this cross-sectional study. The outcome was suicidality, including considered suicide, made a suicide plan, attempted suicide, and injurious suicide attempt. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to investigate the associations between screen time, overweight/obesity, self-perceived overweight, and suicidality, and expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Mediation analysis was used to explore the role of overweight/obesity and self-perceived overweight on the association between screen time and suicidality.
    Results: A total of 30,731 adolescents were included, of which 6,350 (20.65%) had suicidality, including 5,361 (17.45%) with considered suicide, 4,432 (14.42%) with made a suicide plan, 2,300 (7.45%) with attempted suicide, and 677 (2.21%) with injurious suicide attempt. Adolescents with screen time ≥3h were related to higher odds of suicidality (OR=1.35, 95%CI: 1.23-1.46), overweight/obesity (OR=1.27, 95%CI: 1.19-1.38), and self-perceived overweight (OR=1.38, 95%CI: 1.30-1.48) after adjusting confounders. Adolescents with overweight/obesity (OR=1.30, 95%CI: 1.19-1.43) and self-perceived overweight (OR=1.54, 95%CI: 1.39-1.70) were associated with higher odds of suicidality. The association between screen time and suicidality was 4.67% mediated by overweight/obesity and 9.66% mediated by self-perceived overweight. Moreover, the mediating role of overweight/obesity was observed only in females, whereas there were no sex differences in the mediating effect of self-perceived overweight.
    Conclusion: Both overweight/obesity and self-perceived overweight mediated the association between screen time and suicidality.
