Abstract Inhaled iloprost is a well-established medication to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a serious and potentially fatal disease of the pulmonary resistance vessels. The therapeutic administration of iloprost requires six to nine inhalations per day, due to the short biological half-life of this prostacyclin analogue. The I-Neb

Abstract Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare, but severe and life-threatening disease characterized by vasoconstriction and remodeling of the pulmonary arterioles, leading to progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance and ultimately to right-heart failure. In the last two decades, significant progress in treatment of PAH has been made, with currently 12 drugs approved for targeted therapy. Among these, the stable prostacyclin analogues iloprost and treprostinil have been repurposed for inhalation. The paper highlights the development of the two drugs emphasizing the rationale and advantages of the inhalative approach. Despite substantial advances in the specific, mainly vasodilatory PAH therapy, disease progression is mostly inevitable and mortality remains unacceptably high. Thus, introduction of new drugs targeting the cancer-like remodeling of the diseased pulmonary arteries is urgently needed. Inhalation offers pulmonary selectivity and will hopefully pioneer the repurposing of novel highly potent drugs for effective aerosol therapy of PAH.

Title translation Inhalative pharmacotherapy in the future--nanocarriers for pulmonary drug delivery.
Abstract Nanotechnological approaches promise considerable potential for the treatment of pneumological diseases, especially asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). At present numerous nanotechnological approaches are under examination, which allow a controlled release of encapsulated drugs or diagnostics. These include nanocarriers composed of polymers or anorganic materials, liposomes, micelles, quantum dots, dendrimeres, polymer conjugates and other systems. Polymeric nanocarriers give the opportunity to control the temporal as well as the spatial distribution of drugs within the lung. By varying the composition, structure and dimension nanoparticles could offer a controlled and prolonged duration of effect of the encapsulated drugs as well as a regional and cell-specific drug targeting within the lung.

Abstract Portugal and Spain were among the countries hardest hit by the global financial crisis that led to the eurozone’s near collapse after the revelation of Greek public debt in late 2009. Both countries experienced a massive economic shock, as revealed by objective and subjective indicators (Chapter 3). Faced with a dire economic situation and increasing European pressure, the mainstream left in government – PS in Portugal and PSOE in Spain – announced severe austerity measures throughout 2009 and 2010 (Bremer and Vidal 2018). Consequently, the two countries saw union-organized protests against the measures early in the crisis (Accornero and Ramos Pinto 2015; Della Porta et al. 2017a; Kriesi et al. 2020; Portos 2019). Both countries experienced a turning point in 2011 when further noninstitutional actors entered the scene: Geração à Rasca [Screwed generation] in March 2011 in Portugal and 15M (named after the first large-scale protests on May 15, 2011) in Spain. According to some estimates, almost 5 percent of the Portuguese population took to the streets on March 12, 2011 (Carvalho 2018: 98). 15M and the battle cry of the central organizing network Democracia Real, Ya! [Real democracy now] led, after the first demonstration with about 20,000 participants on Puertas del Sol, to weeks of mass protests across the country.

Abstract We study the role of social media in debates regarding two policy responses to COVID-19 in Switzerland: face-mask rules and contact-tracing apps. We use a dictionary classifier to categorize 612'177 tweets by parties, politicians, and the public as well as 441'458 articles published in 76 newspapers between February and August 2020. We distinguish between "problem" (COVID-19) and "solutions" (face masks and contact-tracing apps) and, using a vector autoregression approach, we analyze the relationship between their salience on social and traditional media, as well as among different groups on social media. We find that overall attention to COVID-19 was not driven by endogenous dynamics between the different actors. By contrast, the debate on face masks was led by the attentive public and by politicians, whereas parties and newspapers followed. The results illustrate how social media challenge the capacity of party and media elites to craft a consensus regarding the appropriateness of different measures as responses to a major crisis.

Abstract How does exposure to refugees influence political behavior? We present evidence from Hungary, a country with widespread anti-immigration attitudes, that short term exposure during the 2015 refugee crisis predicts anti-refugee voting and sentiment. We code exposure to refugees at the settlement level using reports from state media, an independent online news site, and an online social media aggregator. Settlements through which refugees traveled showed significantly higher anti-refugee voting in a national referendum in 2016. The effect decreases sharply with distance. Using a difference-in-differences model, we find that the far-right opposition gained, while the governing right-wing party lost votes in these settlements in subsequent parliamentary elections. This suggests incumbents are punished by voters skeptical of immigration regardless of their policy position. Survey data supports this finding of a competition among right-wing parties, as individuals in exposed settlements are more fearful of immigrants and support restrictive policies only if they identify as right-wing.
