Abstract Summary: Adversarial attack transferability is well recognized in deep learning. Previous work has partially explained transferability by recognizing common adversarial subspaces and correlations between decision boundaries, but little is known beyond that. We propose that transferability between seemingly different models is due to a high linear correlation between the feature sets that different networks extract. In other words, two models trained on the same task that are distant in the parameter space likely extract features in the same fashion, linked by trivial affine transformations between the latent spaces. Furthermore, we show how applying a feature correlation loss, which decorrelates the extracted features in corresponding latent spaces, can reduce the transferability of adversarial attacks between models, suggesting that the models complete tasks in semantically different ways. Finally, we propose a dual-neck autoencoder (DNA), which leverages this feature correlation loss to create two meaningfully different encodings of input information with reduced transferability. The bigger picture: Recently, data-driven methods (especially deep learning) have impacted many fields, but these methods suffer from adversarial instability: models that perform well on test samples are easily fooled by adding small but specific noise patterns to these same samples. Furthermore, different models trained for the same task will often be fooled by the same noise patterns (attack transferability). Thus, even ensembles can be easily attacked. Our findings suggest that attack transferability is due to a high correlation in the way information is extracted by different models. We also show that breaking this correlation reduces the transferability of attacks. Robustness against attackers is necessary for entrusting AI with life-sensitive tasks, such as medical diagnosis. By exploring transferability, our work helps explain the nature of adversarial attacks and offers a defense direction via decorrelated ensembles of models.

Abstract Nowadays, sustainability has become an important and widely accepted concept. Energy conservation and emission reduction are closely related to sustainable economic development. Therefore, a 3E efficiency approach, based on the “Energy–Environmental–Economic” (3E) system, can assess the coordination relationships among these three factors from the perspective of energy conservation and emission reduction. The digital economy is a new driving force for economic growth, but few studies have dealt with the question on whether it affects 3E efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the digital economy and 3E efficiency in EU countries. The empirical results indicate that: (1) overall 3E efficiency of EU countries showed an upward trend from 2011 to 2019; (2) in terms of the relationship between the digital economy and 3E efficiency, the digital economy has direct and indirect (through economic growth) impacts on 3E efficiency; when GDP per capita exceeds EUR 15,580, the influence coefficient of the digital economy on 3E efficiency changes from negative to positive. This suggests that EU countries with different levels of economic development should adopt different strategies to ensure the simultaneous development of their digital economy and 3E efficiency.

Abstract Abstract Over recent years, the importance of the patent literature has become increasingly more recognized in the academic setting. In the context of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and data sciences, patents are relevant to not only industry but also academe and other communities. In this article, we focus on deep tomographic imaging and perform a preliminary landscape analysis of the related patent literature. Our search tool is PatSeer. Our patent bibliometric data is summarized in various figures and tables. In particular, we qualitatively analyze key deep tomographic patent literature.

Abstract “Guiding Opinions on Relying on the Golden Waterway to Promote the Development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB)”, the “YREB Development Policy”, is a national Chinese policy aiming to promote industrial structure upgrading and high-quality development in the YREB. To test the effects of this policy, we used 2009–2019 data from 283 cities to examine whether its implementation promoted regional industrial structure upgrading. The YREB Development Policy positively impacted industrial structure advancement but scarcely benefited industrial structure rationalization. Moreover, the impacts indicated a temporary, unsustainable influence on industrial structure advancement, presenting a clear U-shaped development trend. The YREB Development Policy can more significantly improve industrial structure upgrading in cities with large populations. The effects of this policy on industrial structure upgrading in the middle and lower reaches of the YREB are almost five times that in the upper reaches. In addition, the policy more greatly impacts the tertiary industry than the primary and secondary industries, especially in the lower reaches. These findings have policy-making implications, enrich the research regarding the YREB Development Policy impacts on industrial structure upgrading, and provide an empirical reference to improve subsequent policies.

Abstract In arid and semi-arid regions, vegetation restoration will have a significant impact on ecosystem services (ESs). Accurate assessment of the relationship and driving mechanism between ESs will play an important role in the implementation of subsequent vegetation restoration projects and ecosystem management. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and identify the relationship between ESs, and explore the impact and driving mechanism of ecological restoration on the relationship between ESs. Taking the middle reaches of the Yellow River as the study area, this study analyzed three ESs including: Net Primary Productivity (NPP), soil conservation (SC), and water yield (WY), in the vegetation restoration area (VRA) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River for 20 years (2000–2010 and 2010–2020 years(a)). Taking the ecological restoration unit (ERU) as the evaluation unit, we evaluated the impact of three vegetation restoration models on ESs. Using geo-detectors to identify the economic, social and natural drivers that affect the relationship between ESS. The results showed the following: (1) Different vegetation restoration models will lead to significant differences in the restoration rate for ESs. They will lead to an increase in the recovery rate of NPP and SC. The first vegetation restoration mode and the third planting restoration mode will reduce the restoration rate for the WY. (2) The three vegetation restoration models will enhance the synergistic relationship between NPP and SC. They will weaken the trade-off relationship between NPP and WY, SC and WY. (3) Temperature, precipitation, and NDVI will affect the changes in ESs in VRAs. The ESs trade-off-synergy relationship will be affected by precipitation, NDVI, and GDP. This study showed that, with the implementation of vegetation restoration projects, ESs in time and space and the complex heterogeneity of ESs will affect ecosystem management. The results of this study will be helpful for the implementation of subsequent vegetation restoration projects ...

Abstract The exploitation of groundwater in a riverside water source area is a complex process of conversion of surface water and groundwater. At present, the numerical model for simulating the exploitation of riverside water sources often generalizes rivers to the specified head boundary (CHD) or the river boundary (RIV). The CHD generalizes the river into an infinite supply of water, which is obviously unrealistic for seasonal rivers, and the RIV does not have the function of the river confluence. The above two methods directly affect the calculation accuracy of river water and groundwater conversion amount due to inherent loopholes, so the simulation of the riverside exploitation amount has some errors. This study uses the Streamflow-Routing (SFR) model to generalize the Baima-Jili River. By calculating the stream flow, the upstream, and downstream water levels of the rainy, normal, and dry seasons through the permeability parameter between river water and groundwater (parameters such as riverbed permeability coefficient, riverbed thickness, water depth, and cross-sectional shape), a coupling model of surface water and groundwater is established. In order to verify the accuracy of the SFR model simulation, the CHD and RIV conditions are used to generalize the river, and the simulation results of the three models are compared. The results show that the available groundwater exploitation simulated by the SFR model, the CHD, and the RIV boundary conditions are 27.798 × 106, 35.11 × 106, and 25.76 ×106 m3/a, respectively. The known available groundwater exploitation in the study area is 2,870 × 104 m3/a. Therefore, the SFR simulation results are more realistic, indicating that the SFR model is more suitable for coupling simulation of the surface water and groundwater interaction in riverside water sources of a seasonal river. HIGHLIGHTS The SFR model is used to profit the river, which is more in line with the actual situation than other profications.; For river characteristics, better proficiency simulations improve the ...
