Abstract This study aimed to explore how metaphors were used to interpret the pandemic and to address its challenges in primary and secondary schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. A questionnaire was administered to educators and teachers to understand how languages, images, and metaphors were used by themselves and their students to talk about the pandemic and their experiences of living with it. The goal of the questionnaire was to guide critical reflection and encourage more informed language choices. While the existing literature points out the alleged overuse of war metaphors and military frames in public discourse, our findings show that war metaphors are relatively frequent, with other metaphorical frames widely used by teachers and educators to foster resilient attitudes in students. Moreover, in their professional contexts, teachers and educators mostly use metaphorical frames involving resilient attitudes. Our interpretation of the results supports the hypothesis that the purposeful use and deliberate production of metaphors support the choice of metaphors with positive, constructive implications. Finally, some implications of these findings on the theory of metaphor and the methodology of the research are discussed.

Abstract The integration of physical and biological science styles is the key for facing the deluge of molecular level information that is becoming a real threat for knowledge advancement. In this work, I will indicate a possible integration path based on the network formalization of molecular knowledge by two different (here named flux and dynamical) perspectives. Some theoretical and applicative cases are presented, focusing on the different physical models implicit in the two network analysis approaches.

Abstract The present book deals with an historical Castilian legal institution (tanteo comunal) that, in the modern age, allowed villages -by means of lawsuits brought to the royal council of Castile- to repurchase the offices related to their local government (regidores), previously privatized by the crown. In this regard, a survey has been carried on not only through the judicial practice of the time but also through the coeval legal doctrines (doctrina). "Derecho dominical y tanteo comunal" aims also to outline a comparison with more archaic actions (actiones populares) which were used, until then, by local communities against the usurpers of their own properties (bienes comunales), in order to obtain their restitution. To this regard, the results of this research highlight the strong relationship between the acciones populares and the tanteo comunal. However the institutional reforms, later undertaken by the crown, deeply affected local government and eventually eclipsed this particular legal institution

Abstract Reduced agrobiodiversity can leave communities highly vulnerable to changing climatic, economic and political pressures. This book, based on cutting edge research in Syria by Bioversity International (IPGRI), presents practical proposals for establishing markets and securing livelihoods in difficult dryland areas. One of a new series of Earthscan Research Editions – high level research monographs in a wide range of disciplines within sustainable development.Four crops - maize, potatoes, rice and wheat - provide more than 90 per cent of the world's food. Increasingly, old varieties of even these crops are disappearing as farmers and consumers strive for more uniformity in food products. This narrowing of the diversity of agricultural systems' main components has a knock-on effect on less obvious elements, such as insects that play a role in pollinating plants or controlling pests, and the soil organisms that help plants extract nutrients from the soil. Also, farmers need a broad base of agrobiodiversity to be able to respond and adapt to environmental changes and to improve their production. This is especially important in the face of climate change and changing economic and political pressures. This book from Bioversity International describes a study, conducted in Syria, of how communities are developing markets for local products derived from neglected and underutilized plants. Based on concrete case studies, the data and processes documented in the book show the potential of biodiversity to make a significant contribution to livelihood security in communities that inhabit difficult environments with unique resources. The study also highlights the importance of local cultural knowledge and institutions in sustainable development of biodiversity markets. Available on sale at £54.00 from Earthscan.co.uk

Abstract Emmer (Triticum dicoccon) has been cultivated in the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East for 10 000 years. It is one of a family of three ancient crops, known as hulled wheats, whose once-popular cultivation has dwindled in recent years. The other two are einkorn (Triticum monococcum) and spelt (Triticum spelta). Emmer spread to Europe from the Near East in the Neolithic period. During Roman times, it was the main food grain in much of Europe. From the beginning of the 20th century, however, farmers began to turn away from emmer in favour of common and durum wheat (naked wheats), which are easier to clean and process and have higher yields. As a consequence, emmer almost disappeared from Europe and the Near East in the second half of the 20th century.Turkey was no exception to this trend. Emmer cultivation decreased radically from the beginning of the last century. The only remaining pockets of emmer today are grown by resource-poor farmers in marginal areas at 1000-2000 metres above sea level. These farmers use emmer mainly as animal feed. The main areas of emmer production in Turkey today are in Kastamonu and Sinop provinces, in the central northern part of the country. No other crop can be grown as successfully in these areas. Nevertheless, its survival may also be at risk here too because of changes in taste, the increased impact of global and regional markets, difficulties in processing and limited marketing. On the positive side, new market opportunities may be on the horizon thanks to emmer's nutritional and health properties. Already there is evidence of a growing appreciation of emmer among niche consumers in towns, creating new market opportunities.

During the current health emergency caused by Covid-19, both legal operators and companies have focused their attention on smart working again, as a privileged instrument for countering the spread of the pandemic and allowing the production activities recovery. The essay, taking into account the most recent regulatory changes, outlines the peculiarities of the “emergency” smart working, on labour law, safety at work and hr management paths.
