Abstract Stealth solutions of scalar-tensor gravity and less-known de Sitter spaces that generalize them are analyzed regarding their possible role as thermal equilibria at non-zero temperature in the new first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity. No stable equilibria are found, further validating the special role of general relativity as an equilibrium state in the landscape of gravity theories, seen through the lens of first-order thermodynamics.

Abstract We revisit the analogy between a minimally coupled scalar field in general relativity and a perfect fluid, correcting previous identifications of effective temperature and chemical potential. This provides a useful complementary picture for the first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity, paving the way for the Einstein frame formulation (which eluded previous attempts) and raises interesting questions to further develop the analogy.

Abstract We refine and slightly enlarge the recently proposed first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity to include gravitational scalar fields with timelike and past-directed gradients. The implications and subtleties arising in this situation are discussed and an exact cosmological solution of scalar-tensor theory in first-order thermodynamics is revisited in light of these results.

Abstract A reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) study of toluene oxidation at high temperatures under externally applied electrostatic fields has been performed. The impact of the modeling of local charge distribution has been investigated by comparing the widely used Charge Equilibration (QEq) method with the Charge Transfer with Polarization Current Equalization (QTPIE) method, which shields charge transfers up to atomic orbitals and introduces molecular polarization. Using the latter method, it is possible to improve the computation of the atomic charges, which are a critical aspect for the numerical study of electric fields, and to capture important effects of the electric field on rotational and vibrational energies of the toluene molecule. Results show that a more comprehensive treatment of inter- and intramolecular charge distribution achieved through the QTPIE method leads to substantially different applied forces and oxidation rates of toluene compared to the QEq method. Using the QTPIE method, no significant effects of the electrostatic field on the toluene oxidation rate were observed for the range of temperatures and pressures studied here, which is in disagreement with the results obtained with the QEq method where a clear impact of the electrostatic field on the average oxidation rate was found. Therefore, when studying electric field effects with MD simulations, the choice of the method used for the charge equilibration is a key modeling assumption whose impact should be carefully evaluated.

Abstract Geometric pattern formation is an important emergent behavior in many applications involving large-scale multi-agent systems, such as sensor networks deployment and collective transportation. Attraction/repulsion virtual forces are the most common control approach to achieve such behavior in a distributed and scalable manner. Nevertheless, for most existing solutions only numerical and/or experimental evidence of their convergence is available. Here, we revisit the problem of achieving pattern formation giving sufficient conditions to prove analytically that under the influence of appropriate virtual forces, a large-scale multi-agent swarming system locally converges towards a stable and robust triangular lattice configuration. Specifically, the proof is carried out using LaSalle's invariance principle and geometry-based arguments. Our theoretical results are complemented by exhaustive numerical simulations confirming their effectiveness and estimating the region of asymptotic stability of the triangular configuration.

Abstract A stochastic model based on a combination of the cellular automata approach for forest fires and a random walk for firebrands and hot gases has been further developed and used to simulate the Marshall fire, Colorado, December 2021. Typical heat release profiles for burning wooden houses from the literature were used to distill information on the burning duration and ignition delay time needed to model the hours-long firebrand emission from wooden buildings in the Marshall area during this fire. In addition to information on vegetation and housing structures from in-person inspection, satellite images were used to estimate various model parameters. The results give reasonable predictions for the extent of the fire and its time evolution. A parametric analysis further highlighted the sensitivity of predictions to the parameters used in the model and suggested areas for improvement. The very low computational cost of the model, ease of operation, and acceptable accuracy suggest that the proposed framework can be used for operational decision-making and damage assessment.

Abstract Bisphosphonates are potent inhibitors of bone resorption, widely used for the management of osteoporosis and fracture prevention. Recent evidence suggests that bisphosphonates may have beneficial effects in the treatment of thalassemia-associated osteoporosis, a complex and multifactorial condition. Here we summarise available data about the efficacy and tolerability of bisphosphonates in beta--thalassemic patients. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of bisphosphonates in beta-thalassemia were identified searching PubMed. Studies were reviewed to retrieve relevant clinical information. The following variables were considered to assess the safety and efficacy of bisphosphonates-bone mineral density (BMD), markers of bone turnover, incidence of fragility fracture, bone pain, back pain, and clinical adverse events. Five RCTs were identified, investigating alendronate, clodronate, zoledronic acid and neridronate. All bisphosphonates produced a significant decrease of the markers of bone turnover. Alendronate, neridronate, and zoledronic acid significantly improved BMD at the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip. Zoledronic acid and neridronate were also shown to reduce bone and back pain. Probably due to the small sample sizes and to the short duration of the trials, it was not possible to establish the anti-fracture efficacy of bisphosphonates; however, they were well tolerated and adverse events were rare but expected on the basis of previous studies. Sufficient evidence exists to support the use of bisphosphonates in the management of thalassemia-associated osteoporosis (to prevent bone loss and improve the BMD). Further research is warranted to establish their anti-fracture efficacy and long-term safety.

Abstract Since, in Einstein gravity, a massless scalar field with lightlike gradient behaves as a null dust, one could expect that it can act as the matter source of Vaidya geometries. We show that this is impossible because the Klein-Gordon equation forces the null geodesic congruence tangent to the scalar field gradient to have zero expansion, contradicting a basic property of Vaidya solutions. By contrast, exact plane waves travelling at light speed and sourced by a scalar field acting as a null dust are possible.
