    Abstract Extracellular vesicles (EVs) comprise a broad range of secreted cell-derived membrane vesicles. Beyond their more well-characterized role in cell communication, in recent years, EVs have also been shown to play important roles during infection. Viruses can hijack the biogenesis of exosomes (which are small EVs) to promote viral spreading. Additionally, these exosomes are also important mediators in inflammation and immune responses during both bacterial and viral infections. This review summarizes these mechanisms while also describing the impact of bacterial EVs in regulating immune responses. Finally, the review also focuses on the potential and challenges of using EVs, in particular, to tackle infectious diseases.

    Abstract The long-term effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on sleep remain poorly known. We evaluated the association between probable post-COVID-19 condition and changes in sleep quality and quantity before and after SARS-CoV-2 infection in a consecutive sample of non-hospitalized adults. Individuals were identified with SARS-CoV-2 infection in 2020 at the central laboratory of a tertiary hospital in Porto and followed as outpatients. We included patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection ≥3 months before this evaluation, with no missing data on key variables (n = 2445). Participants completed a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, clinical, and infection-related questions. We computed changes in sleep-related parameters referred to 1 month before diagnosis and 1 week before the questionnaire. Multinomial logistic regression models were fitted to compute crude and adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Compared to the pre-infection period, those with probable post-COVID-19 condition reported a greater decrease in hours of sleep, had a 2.60 (95% CI 2.02-3.34) higher adjusted odds of perceiving their sleep quality as worsened and experienced a significant increase in number of days with sleeping disturbances as defined according to multiple items. The association between post-COVID-19 condition and indicators of poor sleep health requires special attention from healthcare professionals and services. It is essential that appropriate multidisciplinary care is provided to mitigate the physical, psychological, social, and professional impact of sleeping problems in these already burdened patients.

    Abstract Some of the icy moons of the solar system with a subsurface ocean, such as Europa and Enceladus, are the targets of future space missions that search for potential extraterrestrial life forms. While the ice shells that envelop these moons have been studied by several spacecrafts, the oceans beneath them remain unreachable. To better constrain the habitability conditions of these moons, we must understand the interactions between their frozen crusts, liquid layers, and silicate mantles. To that end, astrobiologists rely on planetary field analogues, for which the polar regions of Earth have proven to be great candidates. This review shows how spectroscopy is a powerful tool in space missions to detect potential biosignatures, in particular on the aforementioned moons, and how the polar regions of the Earth are being used as planetary field analogues for these extra-terrestrial environments.

    Abstract In the context of marine litter monitoring, reporting the weight of beached litter can contribute to a better understanding of pollution sources and support clean-up activities. However, the litter scaling task requires considerable effort and specific equipment. This experimental study proposes and evaluates three methods to estimate beached litter weight from aerial images, employing different levels of litter categorization. The most promising approach (accuracy of 80 %) combined the outcomes of manual image screening with a generalized litter mean weight (14 g) derived from studies in the literature. Although the other two methods returned values of the same magnitude as the ground-truth, they were found less feasible for the aim. This study represents the first attempt to assess marine litter weight using remote sensing technology. Considering the exploratory nature of this study, further research is needed to enhance the reliability and robustness of the methods.

    Abstract A wide variety of hard structures protect coastal activities and communities from the action of tides and waves worldwide. It is fundamental to monitor the integrity of coastal structures, as interventions and repairs may be needed in case of damages. This work compares the effectiveness of an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to reproduce the 3D geometry of a rocky groin. The Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry technique applied on drone images generated a 3D point cloud and a Digital Surface Model (DSM) without data gaps. Even though the TLS returned a 3D point cloud four times denser than the drone one, the TLS returned a DSM which was not representing about 16% of the groin (data gaps). This was due to the occlusions encountered by the low-lying scans determined by the displaced rocks composing the groin. Given also that the survey by UAS was about eight time faster than the TLS, the SFM-MV applied on UAS images was the most suitable technique to reconstruct the rocky groin. The UAS remote sensing technique can be considered a valid alternative to monitor all types of coastal structures, to improve the inspection of likely damages, and to support coastal structure management.

    Abstract Control of the pinewood nematode (PWN), the causal agent of pine wilt disease, can be achieved through the trunk injection of nematicides; however, many pesticides have been linked to environmental and human health concerns. Essential oils (EOs) are suitable alternatives due to their biodegradability and low toxicity to mammals. These complex mixtures of plant volatiles often display multiple biological activities and synergistic interactions between their compounds. The present work profiled the toxicity of eight EOs against the PWN in comparison to their 1:1 mixtures, to screen for successful synergistic interactions. Additionally, the main compounds of the most synergistic mixtures were characterized for their predicted environmental fate and toxicity to mammals in comparison to emamectin benzoate, a commercial nematicide used against PWN.     Abstract Monitoring the dynamics of coastal cliffs is fundamental for the safety of communities, buildings, utilities, and infrastructures located near the coastline. Structure-from-Motion and Multi View Stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry based on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is a flexible and cost-effective surveying technique for generating a dense 3D point cloud of the whole cliff face (from bottom to top), with high spatial and temporal resolution. In this paper, in order to generate a reproducible, reliable, precise, accurate, and dense point cloud of the cliff face, a comprehensive analysis of the SfM-MVS processing parameters, image redundancy and acquisition geometry was performed. Using two different UAS, a fixed-wing and a multi-rotor, two flight missions were executed with the aim of reconstructing the geometry of an almost vertical cliff located at the central Portuguese coast. The results indicated that optimizing the processing parameters of Agisoft Metashape can improve the 3D accuracy of the point cloud up to 2 cm. Regarding the image acquisition geometry, the high off-nadir (90°) dataset taken by the multi-rotor generated a denser and more accurate point cloud, with lesser data gaps, than that generated by the low off-nadir dataset (3°) taken by the fixed wing. Yet, it was found that reducing properly the high overlap of the image dataset acquired by the multi-rotor drone permits to get an optimal image dataset, allowing to speed up the processing time without compromising the accuracy and density of the generated point cloud. The analysis and results presented in this paper improve the knowledge required for the 3D reconstruction of coastal cliffs by UAS, providing new insights into the technical aspects needed for optimizing the monitoring surveys.

    Abstract Eucalyptus globulus sawdust is a residue from the pulp and paper industry which has been underutilised and undervalued. The thermochemical liquefaction of sawdust can be considered an alternative for recycling this residue, as it results in the production of a bio-oil that, when extracted in water, allows the obtention of an aqueous solution composed of carbohydrates. The sugars resulting from the aqueous fraction of bio-oil can be valued by and applied in the industry to produce sustainable materials. For the first time, the sugar composition of the aqueous extract of bio-oil was disclosed, identified, and quantified by a high-pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC) coupled to a refractive index (RID) detector containing fructose (36.58%) and glucose (33.33%) as the main components, sucrose (15.14%), trehalose (4.82%) and xylose (10.13%). The presence of these sugars was further confirmed by two-dimensional (2D) 1H-13C heteronuclear single-quantum correlation–nuclear magnetic resonance (HSQC–NMR) spectroscopy. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) and elemental analyses were also used. In addition, the pathway leading to the identified sugars is also suggested.
