Abstract Agriculture is a very important sector of the economy that has a great influence on rural areas. Almost sixty years of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the European Union (EU) may impose a question on the impact of this policy on job creation and economic growth in rural areas. By analyzing key indicators, one should note that although there are still many problems to tackle, the CAP has been successful to some extend in increasing employment rate and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita as well as decreasing poverty rate in the EU rural areas. There are also more and more households connected to the next-generation broadband network and there is still a significant number of bed places in the EU rural areas. Although, the situation in specific EU Member States and their rural regions may be different, the overall performance of the EU is satisfactory and shows positive prognostics for the current EU financial perspective of 2021-2027. This paper also provides an empirical approach which checks whether there is a connection between the employment rate and the rural development measured in GDP per capita based on the data from the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the period of 2000-2020. This research confirms that when increasing the level of rural employment, the economic growth rises in rural areas.

Abstract Advanced heart failure (HF) is a complex entity with a clinical course difficult to predict. However, most patients have a poor prognosis. This document addresses the modification of cardiovascular drugs in patients with advanced HF that are not candidates to heart transplantation or ventricular assist device and are in need of palliative care. The adjustment of cardiovascular drugs is frequently needed in these patients. The shift in emphasis from life-prolonging to symptomatic treatments should be a progressive one. We establish a series of recommendations with the aim of adjusting drugs in these patients, in order to adapt treatment to the needs and wishes of each patient. This is frequently a difficult process for patients and professionals, as drug discontinuing needs to balance treatment benefit with the psychological adaption to having a terminal illness. We encourage the use of validated assessment tools to assess prognosis and to use this information to take clinical decisions regarding drug withdrawal and therapeutic changes. The golden rule is to stop drugs that are harmful or non-essential and to continue the ones that provide symptomatic improvement.

Abstract The ongoing process of globalization significantly affects the level of socio-economic development of countries and the progressing economic convergence. Along with the economic development of countries, changes in the level and structure of household consumption occur as a result of getting richer. The aim of the study is to analyze the unification of demand for food in households of the EU Member States and selected OECD countries in 1995–2019, with particular emphasis on spatial relationships. The study also addresses the issue of the relationship between changes in the level and structure of consumption of households with their ecological situation. This relationship is very important due to the assumptions about the idea of sustainable consumption. In the study of the equalization of the level of expenditure on food, the approach of β-absolute convergence and β-conditional convergence were applied. In the second approach, spatio-temporal convergence models were also estimated, taking into account the similarity of food expenditure, conditioned by the geographical location of territorial units. Moreover, the similarity of the ecological situation between analyzed countries was determined, which is the basis for the creation of an additional connection matrix, used in the estimation of spatio-temporal convergence models. The spatio-temporal analysis was based on spatial autoregressive model (SAR) and spatial error model (SE). This study confirms that in the analyzed countries in period of 1995–2019, there was an equalization of the level and share of household expenditure on food, related to the unification of consumption possibilities, determined by the convergence of disposable income.

Abstract Background: A reliable reference of population-based parameters for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and overactive bladder (OAB) is lacking for the elderly. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence, bother, effect on quality of life, and treatment-related behavior for LUTS and OAB in a large population-level cohort of Polish adults aged ≥ 65 years.
Methods: We used data from the telephone LUTS POLAND survey. Respondents were categorized by sex, age, and residence. All LUTS and OAB were assessed with validated questionnaires and a standard protocol based on the International Continence Society definitions.
Results: The mean (standard deviation) age of 2402 participants (60.4% women) was 72.5 (6.7) years. The prevalence of LUTS was 79.5% (men: 76.6%; women: 81.4%), and the prevalence of OAB was 51.4% (men: 49.4%; women: 52.8%). The prevalence of both conditions increased with age. The most prevalent symptom was nocturia. LUTS and OAB were often bothersome, and almost half of participants who reported LUTS or OAB had decreased quality of life related to their urinary functioning. Nevertheless, only one third of participants sought treatment for their bladder problems, and most of these participants received treatment. We did not observe differences between urban and rural areas in all analyzed population-level parameters.
Conclusions: LUTS and OAB were prevalent conditions with significant bother and negative effects on quality of life among Polish adults aged ≥ 65 years. Nevertheless, most affected respondents had not sought treatment. Thus, for older persons, there is a need to increase public awareness about LUTS and OAB, and the negative effects of LUTS and OAB on healthy aging. In addition, greater government and healthcare system resources are needed to better manage LUTS and OAB in older patients.

Abstract The aim of this cross-sectional study is to examine if neglect is associated with self-rated health (SRH) and if neglect mediates the association between selected factors and self-rated health, among older men and women. The analyses were based on face-to-face computer-assisted personal interviews conducted with 1632 randomly selected community-dwelling individuals aged 65 years and more from among the general population of Lesser Poland. The regression models' analysis revealed that elder neglect was associated with self-rated health, and the mediation analysis demonstrated that neglect mediates the association between frequency of church attendance and SRH, as well as between marital status (being a widower vs being married) and SRH, among men. These observations can be helpful in better under- standing of the broad context of elder neglect in order to develop instruments for an efficient improvement of older adults' health and quality of life. In addition to this, the study underlines the role of social networks and social engagement as factors which might protect against neglect, and thus improve self- rated health of older people.

Abstract Frailty and cardiovascular disease share some of the pathophysiologic features. Our objective was to review and metaanalyse the available published evidence on the topic. We performed a comprehensive literature search for studies where pulse wave velocity (PWV) or carotid-ankle vascular index (CAVI) has been linked with frailty in older persons. Of the initial 362 abstracts, after the application of the PRISMA approach, 5 were analysed in detail. We calculated within-study and pooled standardised mean differences of aortic stiffness measures between frail and non-frail (0.62 [0.31-0.92], p < 0.0001, I
