Abstract Models that postulate the existence of hidden sectors address contemporary questions, such as the source of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter. Neutron-to-hidden-neutron oscillations are among the possible mixing processes and have been tested with ultracold neutron storage and passing-through-wall experiments to set constraints on the oscillation period τ_{nn^{'}}. These searches probe the oscillations as a function of the mass splitting due to the neutron-hidden-neutron energy degeneracy. In this work, we present a new limit derived from neutron disappearance in ultracold neutron beam experiments. The overall limit, given by τ_{nn^{'}}>1  s  for |δm|∈[2,69]  peV(95.45%  C.L.), covers the yet unexplored intermediate mass-splitting range and contributes to the ongoing research on hidden sectors.

Abstract We present an apparatus for detection of cyclotron radiation yielding a frequency-based β^{±} kinetic energy determination in the 5 keV to 2.1 MeV range, characteristic of nuclear β decays. The cyclotron frequency of the radiating β particles in a magnetic field is used to determine the β energy precisely. Our work establishes the foundation to apply the cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) technique, developed by the Project 8 Collaboration, far beyond the 18-keV tritium endpoint region. We report initial measurements of β^{-}'s from ^{6}He and β^{+}'s from ^{19}Ne decays to demonstrate the broadband response of our detection system and assess potential systematic uncertainties for β spectroscopy over the full (MeV) energy range. To our knowledge, this is the first direct observation of cyclotron radiation from individual highly relativistic β's in a waveguide. This work establishes the application of CRES to a variety of nuclei, opening its reach to searches for new physics beyond the TeV scale via precision β-decay measurements.

Abstract Mesoporous imidazolium functionalized surface functionalized ionosilicas have been investigated as anion exchange materials for the adsorption of oxo-anions in aqueous media. We studied particularly pertechnetate adsorption and could show that solids bearing long chain substituted imidazolium groups are highly efficient anion exchange materials often displaying high distribution coefficients between solid and liquid phases. We observed that the distribution coefficient of pertechnetate is a function of the presence of competing anionic species. As a consequence, our experiments allowed reproducing experimentally Hofmeister's series. However, pertechnetate adsorption on the material can completely be inhibited in the presence of highly fluorinated anions such as bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (NTf2). This behaviour indicates a particularly imidazophilic behaviour of these anions, which have a particular importance due to their use in water immiscible ionic liquids. Finally, the adsorption process has been shown to be reversible. This feature is of importance in view of the regeneration of the anion exchange material.

Abstract The absolute scale of the neutrino mass plays a critical role in physics at every scale, from the subatomic to the cosmological. Measurements of the tritium end-point spectrum have provided the most precise direct limit on the neutrino mass scale. In this Letter, we present advances by Project 8 to the cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) technique culminating in the first frequency-based neutrino mass limit. With only a cm^{3}-scale physical detection volume, a limit of m_{β}<155  eV/c^{2} (152  eV/c^{2}) is extracted from the background-free measurement of the continuous tritium beta spectrum in a Bayesian (frequentist) analysis. Using ^{83m}Kr calibration data, a resolution of 1.66±0.19  eV (FWHM) is measured, the detector response model is validated, and the efficiency is characterized over the multi-keV tritium analysis window. These measurements establish the potential of CRES for a high-sensitivity next-generation direct neutrino mass experiment featuring low background and high resolution.

Abstract Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

Abstract NAOS (Novel Argo Ocean observing System) is one of the 52 projects selected as part of the Equipex call for proposals from the French programme 'Investissements d'avenir?. The overall objective of the project is to consolidate and improve the French and European contribution to the international Argo observing system and to prepare the next decade of Argo. The challenge is to set up an effective monitoring of the world ocean and to strengthen French leadership in ocean and climate research and prediction.
