    Abstract Here, we show how a membrane can be designed and operated to achieve ‘uphill’ permeation of carbon dioxide against its own chemical potential difference by employing the transport of carbonate ions with coupled ‘downhill’ permeation of oxygen. Absolute values of the carbon dioxide permeability of the order of 106 Barrers are achieved experimentally over more than 200h of operation. These permeabilities are some four orders of magnitude greater than polymeric gas separation membranes. We believe that these high permeabilities are due to the effective use of the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane as a driving force for carbonate transport.

    Abstract Despite the growing interest in understanding haze formation in Chinese megacities, air pollution has been largely overlooked for the Harbin–Changchun (HC) metropolitan area, located in the severe cold climate region in northeast China. In this study, we unfolded significant variations of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in HC's central city (Harbin) during two sequential heating seasons of 2018–2019 and 2019–2020, and we explored major drivers for the observed variations. The two campaigns showed comparable organic carbon (OC) levels but quite different OC sources. The biomass burning (BB) to OC contribution decreased substantially for 2019–2020, which was attributed primarily to the transition of local policies on agricultural fires, i.e., from the “legitimate burning” policy released in 2018 to the “strict prohibition” policy in 2019. Meanwhile, the contribution of secondary OC (OC sec ) increased significantly, associated with the much more frequent occurrences of high relative humidity (RH) conditions during the 2019–2020 measurement period. Similar to OC sec , the major secondary inorganic ions, i.e., sulfate, nitrate and ammonium (SNA), also exhibited RH-dependent increases. Given the considerable aerosol water contents predicted for the high-RH conditions, heterogeneous reactions were likely at play in secondary aerosol formation even in the frigid atmosphere in Harbin (e.g., with daily average temperatures down to below − 20 ∘ C). In brief, compared to 2018–2019, the 2019–2020 measurement period was characterized by a policy-driven decrease of biomass burning OC, a RH-related increase of OC sec and a RH-related increase of SNA, with the first two factors generally offsetting each other. In addition, we found that open burning activities were actually not eliminated by the strict prohibition policy released in 2019, based on a synthesis of air quality data and fire count results.     Abstract Cucumber is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world. The aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is one of the main pests, which often causes significant damage on cucumber and reduction in yield. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content and activity of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) change in plants as a response to stress. In order to analyze the defensive role of MDA and protective enzymes against aphid in cucumber, cucumber lines EP6392 (resistant) and JY30 (susceptible) were measured for their MDA content and protective enzymes activities. Five apterous adult aphids were transferred to the back of the first true leaf of each cucumber seedling plant as treatment and the seedling plant without aphids was used as control. The results indicated that MDA content and POD, PAL activities in seedlings infected by aphid were always higher than in control plants of both lines. MDA content increased initially after aphid infestation and then declined in both two lines. However, the MDA content of JY30 was higher than in EP6392. POD activity of the resistant line was increased more rapidly than that in the susceptible line. PAL activities also increased after aphid infestation and then declined, and that in the resistant line was higher than that in the susceptible line after aphid infection. Therefore, these results indicated that the MDA content, POD and PPO activities are likely to be involved in aphid-resistance in cucumber.

    Abstract Background: The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for treating lung metastases from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Patients and Methods: From December 2012 to November 2014, 17 patients (15 males, and two females, averaged 45.7 years old) with lung metastases from NPC accepted computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous MWA. The average number of lung metastases was 1.7 (range: 1–4), and the biggest tumor diameter was 4.2 cm (range: 0.8–4.2 cm). Nineteen nodules located in the right lung and 10 nodules located in the left lung. A total of 29 ablation sites were performed to 29 lung metastases in 22 MWA sessions. Postoperative assessments of complete tumor necrosis rate, safety, local tumor progression, and survival period were carried out. Results: Of the 29 lesions, complete response was achieved for 27 lesions; residual tumor was found in one lesion 3 months postoperatively; and another lesion was found enlarged 3-month postoperatively with obvious enhancement. Four patients had a small amount of postoperative parenchyma bleeding and two patients had a small amount of pneumothorax. Six months after MWA treatment, new metastatic lesions appeared in six patients, five patients had new metastatic lesions inside the lung, and the other patient had metastatic lesions in the thoracic vertebra. The time for the appearance of new pulmonary metastases for the five patients was 4–20 months, averaged 7.2 months. Conclusion: CT-guided MWA is a promising treatment alternative for local tumor control in selected patients with lung metastases from NPC.

    Abstract AIM: To assess the mechanism for conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production in Lactobacillus plantarum ZS2058. METHODS AND RESULTS: CLA has attracted great interests for decades due to its health‐associated benefits including anticancer, anti‐atherogenic, anti‐obesity and modulation of the immune system. A number of microbial CLA producers were widely reported including lactic acid bacteria. Lactobacillus plantarum ZS2058, an isolate from Chinese traditional fermented food, could convert LA to CLA with various intermediates. To characterize the genetic determinants for generating CLA, a cre‐lox‐based system was utilized to delete the genes encoding myosin cross‐reactive antigen (MCRA), short‐chain dehydrogenase/oxidoreductase (DH) and acetoacetate decarboxylase (DC) in Lact. plantarum ZS2058, respectively. Neither intermediate was detected in the corresponding gene deletion mutant. Meanwhile all those mutants could recover the ability to convert linoleic acid to CLA when the corresponding gene was completed. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that CLA production was a multiple‐step reaction catalysed by triple‐component linoleate isomerase system encoded by mcra, dh and dc. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Multicomponent linoleic acid isomerase provided important results for illustration unique mechanism for CLA production in Lact. plantarum ZS2058. Lactobacilli with CLA production ability offer novel opportunities for functional food development.

    Abstract A model with two channels of electrical transport (TCET) for perovskite manganites is proposed, and it is described by an equivalent device with two current-carrier channels. In one channel, there is a spin-independent resistor (R3) with an equivalent resistivity of ρ3. In the other channel, there are two spin-dependent resistors in series (R1 and R2) with an equivalent resistivity of ρ1 + ρ2. The component ρ1 includes residual resistivity and the resistivity contributed by crystal-lattice scattering. The other component of the equivalent resistivity, ρ2, originates from the spin orientations of the itinerant electrons and the local electrons of the outer O 2p and Mn 3d orbits that deviate from the orientation of their ground states when the test temperature is close to the Curie temperature. Using this model, we fitted the experimental curves of the resistivity versus test temperature for single-crystalline La1−xSrxMnO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.40) and polycrystalline La0.6Sr0.4Mn1−xFexO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.30). In addition, we investigated the effects of the fraction of the antiferromagnetic phase, scattering at the crystallite interfaces, and the crystal-cell constants on the samples' resistivity. The physical mechanism of the TCET model was explained using an O 2p itinerant-electron model, which has been used in other studies to explain the magnetic ordering of several series of spinel ferrites and perovskite manganites.

    Abstract China is the top kiwifruit-producing country worldwide, with ∼10,000 ha of commercial production (Li et al. 2016; Wang et al. 2017). About 10% of the kiwifruits harvested from several Chinese cultivars including Jinyan, Hongyang, and Qinmei in several fruit markets from Shaanxi (Xi’an city) and Sichuan (Dujiangyan city) provinces of China had postharvest rot in 2015 and 2016. All fruits were collected from the fruit markets, and the symptoms were observed. Symptoms appeared as soft, light to dark brown, sunken lesions that gradually became round or oval. The lesions often started from the pericarp and then extended to the whole fruit. To isolate the pathogen, small pieces (5-mm length) of the lesion margin collected from 10 diseased fruits were surface-sterilized in 0.1% HgCl2 for 1 min and in 75% ethanol for 30 s, rinsed twice with sterile distilled water, placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated for 4 days at 25°C. Then, eight pure cultures were obtained by single-spore culturing (Fs-c-1 to Fs-c-8). All eight isolates produced white and fluffy aerial mycelium on PDA plates, and light purple pigmentation was observed in the center of old cultures. The falciform macroconidia (n = 30) were hyaline, 3 to 5 celled, curved, with well-developed foot cells and blunt apical cells, and measured 29.5 to 48.3 × 2.8 to 7.5 μm. The microconidia (n = 50) were hyaline, 1 to 2 celled, oval or reniform, 8.9 to 14.8 × 1.9 to 4.3 μm, and borne in false heads. Spherical chlamydospores (n = 30) were produced singly or in chains and measured 9.3 × 7.5 μm. Based on morphological characters, the isolates were preliminarily identified as Fusarium solani (Leslie et al. 2006). The isolate Fs-c-1 was further confirmed by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and elongation factor (EF1-α) genes. Analysis of the ITS (accession no. KY933401) and EF1-α (MF040644) sequence shared 97.06 to 100% identities with ITS (FD_01866) and EF-1α (FD_01559) of F. solani in the FUSARIUM-ID database, respectively. Thus, both morphological and molecular data supported that the strain we isolated from diseased kiwifruits belonged to F. solani. Each of the eight isolates was inoculated on surface disinfected (70% ethanol, 5 min) mature kiwifruits. Five kiwifruits were wounded with a sterilized needle, inoculated with 20 μl of conidial suspension (107 conidia/ml), and then incubated in a sterilized bottle with moist paper to maintain humidity. Three fruits mock-inoculated with sterile water served as negative controls. Each inoculated site was covered with a piece of wet cotton to preserve water evaporation. Inoculated fruits enclosed in the sterilized bottle were maintained in a growth chamber at 25°C with 90% relative humidity (day/night). After 9 days, disease symptoms including soft dark brown skin and sunken lesions ∼20 mm in diameter were observed. Finally, lesions covered the whole fruits, whereas controls remained asymptomatic. The experiment was performed three times. The pathogen was successfully reisolated from inoculated fruits. The reisolated culture had identical aerial mycelium, microconidia, and macroconidia identical to F. solani, thus fulfilling Koch’s postulates. These fungi were placed in the Herbarium of Mycology of Jilin Agricultural University. Although F. solani has been previously reported causing fruit rot on kiwifruit in California (French et al. 1987), and F. acuminatum caused fruit rot on kiwifruit in China (Wang et al. 2015), this is the first report of F. solani causing postharvest fruit rot on kiwifruit in China. Fusarium mycotoxin contamination to kiwifruit could pose a health risk to humans, so more research is needed to help growers and packing houses manage this disease.

    Abstract Powder samples of the spinel ferrites MxNi0.7−xFe2.3O4 (M = Cr, Co and 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) and CrxNi0.7Fe2.3−xO4 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) were synthesized using the chemical co-precipitation method. The XRD spectra confirmed that the samples had a single-phase cubic spinel structure. Magnetic measurements showed that the magnetic moments (μexp) per formula both at 10 K and 300 K increased with Co substitution, while the values of μexp decreased with Cr substitution. Applying the assumption that the magnetic moments of Cr2+ and Cr3+ lie antiparallel to those of the divalent and trivalent Fe, Co, and Ni cations in the same sublattice of spinel ferrites, these interesting behaviors could be easily interpreted. The cation distributions of the three series of samples were estimated successfully by fitting the dependences of μexp, measured at 10 K, on the doping level x, using a quantum-mechanical potential barrier model earlier proposed by our group. The results obtained for the Cr cation distributions at the (A) and [B] sites are very close to those obtained elsewhere using neutron diffraction.

    Abstract Six parental lines and fifteen F1 hybrid cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.), produced under two different growing environments, were used for an analysis of five major aromatic substances using genetic models, including additive and dominance effects, as well as the effects of their interaction with the environment. The 2E-nonenal, octanol, and 2E, 6Z-nondienal contents of cucumbers were controlled mainly by both additive and dominant effects, while the nonanal and 6Z-nonenal contents were controlled mainly by an additive effect. Both the broad-sense and narrow-sense heritability of these five aromatic substances were low, indicating that selective breeding to improve the levels of these five aromatic substances might be less effective in the early generations. High levels of correlation among the five aromatic substances were found in cucumber.

    Abstract We evaluated changes in levels by comparing serum proteins in senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 (SAMP8) mice at 2, 6, 12, and 15 months of age (SAMP8-2 m, -6 m, -12 m, -15 m) to age-matched SAM-resistant 1 (SAMR1) mice. Mice were sacrificed, and blood was analyzed by 2-dimensional electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry. Five protein spots were present in all SAMP8 serum samples, but only appeared in SAMR1 samples at 15 months of age except for spot 3, which also showed a slight expression in SAMR1-12 m sera. Two proteins decreased in the sera from SAMP8-2 m, -6 m, and -12 m mice, and divided into 2 spots each in SAMP8-15 m sera. Thus, the total number of altered spots in SAMP8 sera was 7; of these, 4 were identified as Ig kappa chain V region (M-T413), chain A of an activity suppressing Fab fragment to cytochrome P450 aromatase (32C2_A), alpha-fetoprotein, and apolipoprotein A-II. M-T413 is a monoclonal CD4 antibody, which inhibits T cell proliferation. We found that M-T413 RNA level was significantly enhanced in splenocytes from SAMP8-2 m mice. This agreed with serum M-T413 protein alterations and a strikingly lower blood CD4+ T cell count in SAMP8 mice when compared to the age-matched SAMR1 mice, with the latter negatively correlating with serum M-T413 protein volume. Age-related changes in serum proteins favored an increase in autoantibodies and alpha-fetoprotein and a decrease of apolipoprotein A-II, which occurred in SAMP8 mice at 2 months of age and onwards. These proteins may serve as candidate biomarkers for early aging.
