Abstract A new pyran derivative, 6-hydroxy-2H-pyran-3-carbaldehyde, has been isolated from the methanolic extract of Crinum yemense along with the known alkaloid haemanthamine, benzoic acid and 1,1'-bis(1,1'-carboxyethyl) ether which is isolated from a natural source for the first time. Structure elucidation of these compounds based on spectroscopicevidences. The pyran derivative was found to be a tyrosinase inhibitor more potent than kojic acid.

Abstract A total of 209 randomly selected Malaysian university students (128 from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 81 from the University of New South Wales) completed a self-filled questionnaire enquiring about their smoking behaviour and psychosocial characteristics. The prevalence of smoking was 26.6 per cent among students in Malaysia and 18.8 per cent among students in Australia (average 23.4%). Both samples have similar patterns in terms of age of starting smoking, time of the day when they smoked, family and peer history of smoking, and whether or not they inhaled deeply during smoking. The smokers tend to be male, studying beyond the first year, staying with peers outside the hostel, having financial sources other than a scholarship, and abnormal mental health score. However, the smokers from the Australian samples were noted to smoke less and made fewer attempts at quitting the habit.

Abstract Dendrosicyos socotrana Balf.f. is a unique species (Cucurbitaceae) native to Socotra island in the horn of Africa. From the chloroform extract of the stems, A new isocucurbitacin (Dendrocyin) with unusual cyclization in the side chain; 24beta-ethoxy-20-25-epoxy-3alpha,16alpha-dihydroxy-9-methyl-19-norlanost-5(6) ene-2,11,22-trione has been isolated alongside isocucurbitacin R. Their structural configuration were established by usual spectroscopic (1H NMR, 13C NMR and DEPT) and two-dimensional NMR techniques (1H-1H Cosy, HMBC and HMQC).

Abstract Quinolizidine and dipiperidyl alkaloids profiles have been determined for various plant organs of Lygos raetam Forssk. L. raetam var. sarcocarpa and L. raetam var. bovei, using TLC, GC, GC-MS and HPLC techniques. Sixteen quinolizidine and dipiperidyl alkaloids were identified including baptofoline alkaloid which have not previously been reported in the genus Lygos. Biological evaluulation including hypoglycemic effect, anti-inflammatory activity, and some pharmacological studies of the different extracts as well as some of the isolated alkaloids were also performed. N-methylcytisine was proved to have a significant hypoglycemic effect on the induced diabetic mice and anti-inflammatory effect against the induced odema as well as a sedation effect on locomotor activity enhanced by methamphetamine.
