    Abstract The generation of superpixels is becoming a critical step in SAR image segmentation. However, most studies on superpixels only focused on clustering methods without considering multi-feature in SAR images. Generating superpixels for complex scenes is a challenging task. It is also time consuming and inconvenient to manually adjust the parameters to regularize the shapes of superpixels. To address these issues, we propose a new superpixel generation method for SAR images based on edge detection and texture region selection (EDTRS), which takes into account the different features of SAR images. Firstly, a Gaussian function is applied in the neighborhood of each pixel in eight directions, and a Sobel operator is used to determine the redefined region. Then, 2D entropy is introduced to adjust the edge map. Secondly, local outlier factor (LOF) detection is used to eliminate speckle-noise interference in SAR images. We judge whether the texture has periodicity and introduce an edge map to select the appropriate region and extract texture features for the target pixel. A gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and principal component analysis (PCA) are combined to extract texture features. Finally, we use a novel approach to combine the features extracted, and the pixels are clustered by the K-means method. Experimental results with different SAR images show that the proposed method outperforms existing superpixel generation methods with an increase of 5–10% in accuracy and produces more regular shapes.

    Abstract Background: Breast cancer is the second largest cancer in the world, the incidence of breast cancer continues to rise worldwide, and women’s health is seriously threatened. Therefore, it is very important to explore the characteristic changes of breast cancer from the gene level, including the screening of differentially expressed genes and the identification of diagnostic markers.Methods: The gene expression profiles of breast cancer were obtained from the TCGA database. The edgeR R software package was used to screen the differentially expressed genes between breast cancer patients and normal samples. The function and pathway enrichment analysis of these genes revealed significant enrichment of functions and pathways. Next, download these pathways from KEGG website, extract the gene interaction relations, construct the KEGG pathway gene interaction network. The potential diagnostic markers of breast cancer were obtained by combining the differentially expressed genes with the key genes in the network. Finally, these markers were used to construct the diagnostic prediction model of breast cancer, and the predictive ability of the model and the diagnostic ability of the markers were verified by internal and external data.Results: 1060 differentially expressed genes were identified between breast cancer patients and normal controls. Enrichment analysis revealed 28 significantly enriched pathways (p < 0.05). They were downloaded from KEGG website, and the gene interaction relations were extracted to construct the gene interaction network of KEGG pathway, which contained 1277 nodes and 7345 edges. The key nodes with a degree greater than 30 were extracted from the network, containing 154 genes. These 154 key genes shared 23 genes with differentially expressed genes, which serve as potential diagnostic markers for breast cancer.     Abstract Abstract To understand the epidemiological and genetic characteristics of B19V, a multiple-province surveillance of patients with febrile rash illnesses (FRIs) were conducted in China during 2009 ~ 2021. The clinical specimens of 3,820 FRI patients were collected and tested for B19V DNA. A total of 99 (2.59%) patients were positive for B19V, and 49 (49.49%) were children under 5 years old. B19V infections occurred throughout the year without obvious seasonal pattern. Ten NS1-VP1u sequences and seven genome sequences were obtained in this study, identified as subgenotype 1a. Combined with the globally representative genome sequences, no temporal and geographic clustering trends of B19V were observed, and there was no significant correlation between B19V sequences and clinical manifestations. The evolutionary rate of the B19V genome was 2.30 × 10–4 substitutions/site/year. The number of negative selection sites was higher than that of positive selection sites. It was the first to comprehensively describe the prevalence patterns and evolutionary characteristics of B19V in FRI patients in China. B19V played the role in FRI patients. Children under 5 years old were the main population of B19V infection. Subgenotype 1a was prevalent in FRI patients in China. B19V showed a high mutation rate, while negative selection acted on the genome.

    Abstract This study presents a stability analysis of an extended berm reinforced by geotextiles, with a steep slope of 1V:1.1H (vertical: horizontal). Finite element (FE) analyses were carried out to explore the failure mechanism and factor of safety (FOS) of the berm, on which the effect of the strength of geotextiles, leachate level, and anti-slide pile arrangement located at the toe of the berm were considered. It was found that: (1) failure surfaces developed along the interface between the new and the existing berms; (2) the FOS decreased as the leachate increased, and an FOS value of 1.42 could be obtained if the leachate level was controlled at a height of 20 m; (3) the tensile force of geotextiles was far lower than the available strength, which suggested that the geotextile had enough of a safety reserve; and (4) one row of longer piles at the toe of the berm performed better than two rows of shorter piles if the total length of piles was the same. The design and analysis of this project can be used as a reference for landfill expansion. Especially for a site condition with limited space, a geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) berm is a safe, reliable and promising alternative.

    Abstract Abstract Background Patients undergoing endocrine therapy for breast cancer often suffer from poor psychosocial adaptation, low compliance with endocrine therapy and poor quality of life. However, the relationship among the three is not completely clear. The aims of this study were to investigate the status of psychosocial adaptation (PSA), medication adherence and quality of life (QOL) in breast cancer women with adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET), and to analyze the influencing factors of QOL and explore the relationship among them. Methods 346 breast cancer women were selected who underwent endocrine therapy after surgery, and data collected by the general information questionnaire, the PSA questionnaire among breast cancer women with AET, Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B). The relationship among the variables was investigated by univariate analysis, multiple stepwise regression analysis and mediating effect analysis. Results The scores of PSA, medication adherence and QOL were slightly above the medium level. Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in QOL among breast cancer women of AET with different types of exercise, medical payment methods, discomfort symptoms (headache, hypomnesis, arthralgia, perturbation), type of discomfort symptoms, medication adherence and PSA; Multi-factor analysis showed that PSA and medication adherence were the influential factors of QOL; mediating effect showed that medication adherence played a partial mediating role in PSA and QOL. Conclusion The QOL of breast cancer women with AET will be directly affected by PSA. Medication compliance has a weak mediating effect in the indirect impact of PSA on the QOL. In the future, clinical nursing work should take targeted measures to improve the PSA level of patients, and effectively improve the compliance of patients with medication, so as to better improve the QOL of breast cancer women.

    Abstract As one of the important techniques to explore unknown places for users, the methods that are proposed for point-of-interest (POI) recommendation have been widely studied in recent years. Compared with traditional recommendation problems, POI recommendations are suffering from more challenges, such as the cold-start and one-class collaborative filtering problems. Many existing studies have focused on how to overcome these challenges by exploiting different types of contexts (e.g., social and geographical information). However, most of these methods only model these contexts as regularization terms, and the deep information hidden in the network structure has not been fully exploited. On the other hand, neural network-based embedding methods have shown its power in many recommendation tasks with its ability to extract high-level representations from raw data. According to the above observations, to well utilize the network information, a neural network-based embedding method (node2vec) is first exploited to learn the user and POI representations from a social network and a predefined location network, respectively. To deal with the implicit feedback, a pair-wise ranking-based method is then introduced. Finally, by regarding the pretrained network representations as the priors of the latent feature factors, an embedding-based POI recommendation method is proposed. As this method consists of an embedding model and a collaborative filtering model, when the training data are absent, the predictions will mainly be generated by the extracted embeddings. In other cases, this method will learn the user and POI factors from these two components. Experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the importance of the network embeddings and the effectiveness of our proposed method.

    Abstract Context-aware recommendation (CR) is the task of recommending relevant items by exploring the context information in online systems to alleviate the data sparsity issue of the user-item data. Prior methods mainly studied CR by document-based modeling approaches, that is, making recommendations by additionally utilizing textual data such as reviews, abstracts, or synopses. However, due to the inherent limitation of the bag-of-words model, they cannot effectively utilize contextual information of the documents, which results in a shallow understanding of the documents. Recent works argued that the understanding of document context can be improved by the convolutional neural network (CNN) and proposed the convolutional matrix factorization (ConvMF) to leverage the contextual information of documents to enhance the rating prediction accuracy. However, ConvMF only models the document content context from an item view and assumes users are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d). But in reality, as we often turn to our friends for recommendations, the social relationship and social reviews are two important factors that can change our mind most. Moreover, users are more inclined to interact (buy or click) with the items that they have bought (or clicked). The relationships among items are also important factors that can impact the user’s final decision. Based on the above observations, in this work, we target CR and propose a joint convolutional matrix factorization (JCMF) method to tackle the encountered challenges, which jointly considers the item’s reviews, item’s relationships, user’s social influence, and user’s reviews in a unified framework. More specifically, to explore items’ relationships, we introduce a predefined item relation network into ConvMF by a shared item latent factor and propose a method called convolutional matrix factorization with item relations (CMF-I).     Abstract Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose has long been considered a major cause of drug-induced liver injury. Ferroptosis is a type of programmed cell death mediated by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a systemic response triggered by the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the ER. Ferroptosis and ER stress have been proven to contribute to the progression of APAP-induced acute liver injury (ALI). It was reported that salidroside protects against APAP-induced ALI, but the potential mechanism remain unknown. In this study, male C57BL/6 J mice were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected APAP (500 mg/kg) to induce an ALI model. Salidroside was i.p. injected at a dose of 100 mg/kg 2 h prior to APAP administration. Mice were sacrificed 12 h after APAP injection and the liver and serum of the mice were obtained for histological and biochemistry analysis. AML12 cells were used in in vitro assays. The results indicated that salidroside mitigated glutathione degradation via inhibiting cation transport regulator homolog 1 (CHAC1) to attenuate ferroptosis, and simultaneously suppressing PERK-eIF2α-ATF4 axis-mediated ER stress, thus alleviating APAP-induced ALI. However, PERK activator CCT020312 and overexpression of ATF4 inhibited the protective function of salidroside on CHAC1-mediated ferroptosis. Besides this, activation of the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway by salidroside was demonstrated to have a protective effect against APAP-induced ALI. Interestingly, selective inhibition of SIRT1 ameliorated the protective effects of salidroside on ER stress and ferroptosis. Overall, salidroside plays a significant part in the mitigation of APAP-induced ALI by activating the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling to inhibit ER stress-mediated ferroptosis in the ATF4-CHAC1 axis.

    Abstract Abstract This rapid response surveillance project was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to collect “perishable” data on egress behaviors and neighborhood conditions surrounding healthcare centers (HCCs) in New York City (NYC) during the initial NYC COVID-19 PAUSE ordinance from March 22nd to May 19th, 2020. Anonymized data on NYC HCC egress behaviors were collected by observational field workers using phone-based mapping applications. Each egress trip record includes the day of week, time of day, destination category type, along with an array of behavioral outcome categories, ambient weather conditions and socio-economic factors. Egress trajectories with precise estimates of distance traveled and the spatial dispersion or “spread” around each HCC were added via post-processing. The data collection and cleaning process resulted in 5,030 individual egress records from 18 facilities over a 9-week period.

    Abstract Many industrial wastewater streams contain heavy metals, posing serious and irreversible damage to humans and living organisms, even at low concentrations due to their high toxicity and persistence in the environment. In this study, high-performance monodispersed chitosan (CS) microspheres were prepared using a simple microfluidic method and evaluated for metal removal from contaminated water. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption characteristics for the removal of copper ions, one representative heavy metal, from aqueous solutions. The inherent advantages of microfluidics enabled a precise control of particle size (CV = 2.3%), while exhibiting outstanding selectivity towards target ions (adsorption capacity 75.52 mg g−1) and fair regeneration (re-adsorption efficiency 74% after 5 cycles). An integrated adsorption mechanism analytic system was developed based on different adsorption kinetics and isotherms models, providing an excellent adsorption prediction model with pseudo-second order kinetics (R2 = 0.999), while the isotherm was fitted best to the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.998). The multi-step adsorption process was revealed via quantitative measurements and schematically described. Selective adsorption performance of CS microspheres in the present of other competitive metal ions with different valence states has been demonstrated and studied by both experimental and density functional theory (DFT) analysis.
