Abstract A reference list of Turkish bryophytes published between 1829 and 2017 is presented, including a brief history of Turkish bryology. The list comprises 520 publications which focus largely on flora and taxonomy, vegetation and ecology of Turkish bryophytes. Some larger revisional studies are included in cases when they refer to Turkish records or if they include Turkish locality data. A new topic which come along within the last years are experimental studies based on Turkish material. They are included as well, however, may far away from being complete.

Abstract The short-lived thallose liverwort Riccia lamellosa (Ricciaceae) is first recorded for Azerbaijan, hence bridging the distribution gap between the Russian Caucasus, Iran and Iraq. Its site conditions in the semi-desert landscape of Qobustan south of Bakı are reported and illustrated. An updated list of Riccia species of the Caucasus ecoregion is provided.

Abstract In today’s (hyper-)arid northern Arabia subsistence strategies changed or were complemented twice during the Holocene: Mobile herding economy is supposed to have been introduced during an Early Holocene period of increased humidity. The onset of oasis agriculture is assumed for the Mid to Late Holocene, either during moisture conditions or aridification. Our radiocarbon-dated palynological record of Tayma evidence for the first time for a short Early Holocene ‘humid period’, providing favoured pastures (grasslands), facilitating the spread of herders. About 8000 calBP these grasslands retreated, triggered by aridification. During the Mid Holocene, around 6000 calBP, recorded grape and fig pollen document the beginning of plant cultivation at the oasis of Tayma. Plant cultivation as another subsistence strategy thus was applied during long-term aridification. The few so far documented cultivated plants may point to a not yet fully established oasis agriculture.

Abstract : Vegetation is one of the most important natural resources for humans and animals (wild and domestic). Holocene vegetation shifts are documented in a pollen diagram of Tayma in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The palynological results suggest a short ”early Holocene humid period”, followed by arid conditions for nearly 2000 years. Around 6300 cal BP, contemporaneous with the beginning of fruit tree cultivation at the oasis of Tayma, slightly wetter conditions may have prevailed. Although at least since (the end) of the mid-Holocene human impact is recorded, climat seems to be the major driver for the Holocene vegetation shifts – and thus for the changes of the natural, biotic resources in the Tayma region.

Abstract An early-to-mid Holocene lake in the north of the oasis of Tayma, northwestern Saudi Arabia, proved to be an excellent palynological archive. A shallow, probably brackish water body formed at about 9200 cal BP, with the dominance of goosefoot throughout the sequence indicating the persistence of desert vegetation. However, distinct vegetation changes are recorded during the early Holocene. Grasslands spread soon after 9000 cal BP and reached their maximal expansion ca 8600–8000 cal BP. At about 8000 cal BP these grasslands retreated abruptly and were replaced by more drought-resistant dwarf-shrublands, similar to the present-day ecosystems. The recorded early Holocene grassland expansion furnishes for the first time evidence of an additional and more favourable grazing resource, and thereby improved conditions for herders/hunters, during the Early Holocene in northwestern Arabia, which retreated abruptly due to aridification at about 8000 cal BP.

Abstract VIETBIO [Innovative approaches to biodiversity discovery and characterisation in Vietnam] is a bilateral German-Vietnamese research and capacity building project focusing on the development and transfer of new methods and technology towards an integrated biodiversity discovery and monitoring system for Vietnam. Dedicated field training and testing of innovative methodologies were undertaken in Cuc Phuong National Park as part and with support of the project, which led to the new biodiversity data and records made available in this article collection.VIETBIO is a collaboration between the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin – Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science (MfN), the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum, Freie Universität Berlin (BGBM) and the Vietnam National Museum of Nature (VNMN), the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), the Southern Institute of Ecology (SIE), as well as the Institute of Tropical Biology (ITB); all Vietnamese institutions belong to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).The article collection "VIETBIO" (https://doi.org/10.3897/bdj.coll.63) reports original results of recent biodiversity recording and survey work undertaken in Cuc Phuong National Park, northern Vietnam, under the framework of the VIETBIO project. The collection consist of this “main” cover paper – characterising the study area, the general project approaches and activities, while also giving an extensive overview on previous studies from this area – followed by individual papers for higher taxa as studied during the project. The main purpose is to make primary biodiversity records openly available, including several new and interesting findings for this biodiversity-rich conservation area. All individual data papers with their respective primary records are expected to provide useful baselines for further taxonomic, phylogenetic, ecological and conservation-related studies on the respective taxa and, thus, will be maintained as separate datasets, including separate GUIDs also ...
