Abstract Coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena are encountered in desiccant coated dehumidifier, and their numerical modeling is becoming indispensable. In this study, three conjugate heat and mass transfer models were compared to clarify the effects of interparticle mass transfer and local kinetic non-equilibrium on modeling accuracy, and the models were validated by experiment results of silica gel and FAM Z01 coated dehumidifiers with single one air channel. Furthermore, a parametric study on the separate mass transfer characteristics of the dehumidifier under isothermal dehumidification was conducted based on one of the improved models. Results demonstrated that the effect of interparticle mass transfer should be involved, while the local kinetic non-equilibrium tends to be considered for desiccants with steep isotherm shape. Parametric study revealed that as air velocity increases, both air- and solid-side mass transfer change significantly, while desiccant layer thickness, interparticle porosity and isotherm shape mainly affect solid-side mass transfer. The average mass transfer Biot numbers Bim of desiccant layer with relative low thickness of 0.1 mm under various parameters are in the same order of magnitude as 1, indicating that the mass transfer resistance on solid side cannot be ignored generally.

Abstract Background: Inguinal lymphadenectomy (iLAD) is effective for penile carcinoma treatment, but usually results in many complications. This study aims to clinically evaluate the feasibility and clinical significance of a laparoscopic radical iLAD approach partly preserving great saphenous vein branches for penile carcinoma patients.
Methods: A total of 48 patients with penile cancer who underwent laparoscopic radical iLAD with retention of the great saphenous vein in Henan Cancer Hospital from 2012 Jan to 2020 Dec were included in this study. Sixteen penile carcinoma patients who underwent laparoscopic radical iLAD preserving parts of superficial branches of the great saphenous vein were identified as the sparing group, and the matched 32 patients who incised those branches were identified as control group. This new procedure was performed by laparoscopy, preserving parts of superficial branches of the great saphenous vein, superficial lateral and medial femoral veins. Clinicopathological features and perioperative variables were recorded. Postoperative complications, including skin flap necrosis, lymphorrhagia, and lower extremity edema were analyzed retrospectively.
Results: We found that the operative time of the sparing group is significantly longer than the control group (p = 0.011). There was no statistical difference in intraoperative blood loss, the lymph node number per side, average time to remove the drainage tube and postoperative hospital stay between the two groups. Compared to the control group, the sparing group showed a significantly decreased incidence of lower extremity edema (p = 0.018). The preservation of parts of superficial branches of the great saphenous vein was mainly decreased the incidence of edema below ankle (p = 0.034).
Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the iLAD with preserving parts of superficial branches of the great saphenous vein, with a decreased incidence of postoperative complications, is a safe and feasible approach for penile cancer.

Abstract Increasing concern about sulfur dioxide (SO2) from diesel vehicle exhausts causing detrimental effects on NOx removal catalysts has resulted in the development of dry desulfurization filters for complete removal of SO2. In this study, a compact MnO2 filter was developed for diesel emission control. The SO2-capture behavior of the compact MnO2 filter was investigated by using a volumetric device in a low temperature range (200–400 °C) and low SO2 pressure conditions. The maximal capacity of the MnO2 filter was 304.1 mgSO2 per gMnO2 at 400 °C. Based on the experimental results, the required volume of the MnO2 filter was estimated as only 0.6 L for a diesel car with 30 000 km distance traveled per year. The thickness of the MnO2 filter had significant influence on its SO2-capture performance. The sulfate reaction mechanism was also discussed by using a grain model under four reaction temperature conditions for improving the efficiency of the design of the desulfurization filter. The sulfate process can be divided into two control stages (the chemical reaction control stage and the solid diffusion control stage) and the prediction models fit the experimental data well for both control stages, indicating that the two-stage grain model is suitable for the sulfate reaction between the MnO2 filter and SO2. The calculated apparent activation energy of 18.8 kJ mol−1 indicates that the MnO2 filter exhibits high activity for SO2 adsorption in a pure SO2 atmosphere.
