Abstract This study investigated the effects of nitrogen form on root activity and nitrogen uptake kinetics of Camellia oleifera Abel. seedlings, providing a scientific basis for improving nitrogen use efficiency and scientific fertilization in C. oleifera production. Taking one-year-old C. oleifera cultivar ‘Xianglin 27’ seedlings as subjects, 8 mmol·L⁻¹ of nitrogen in varied forms (NO3−:NH4+ = 0:0, 10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 0:10) was applied in this study as the treatment conditions to investigate the effects of different nitrogen forms on root activity and nitrogen uptake kinetics in C. oleifera seedlings. Comparing the performance of nutrient solutions with different NO3−:NH4+ ratios, the results showed that a mixed nitrogen source improved the root activity of C. oleifera seedlings based on total absorption area, active absorption area, active absorption area ratio, specific surface area, and active specific surface area. When NO3−:NH4+ = 5:5, the total absorption area and active absorption area of the seedling roots reached the maximum. The results of uptake kinetic parameters showed that Vmax NH4+ > Vmax NO3− and Km NO3− > Km NH4+, indicating that the uptake potential of ammonium–nitrogen by C. oleifera seedlings is greater than that of nitrate–nitrogen. The conclusion was that compared to either ammonium– or nitrate–nitrogen, the mixed nitrogen source was better for promoting the root activity of C. oleifera seedlings, and the best nitrate/ammonium ratio was 5:5.

Abstract In many actual discontinuous control systems, the state might undergo some abrupt changes when the impulsive effects appear and the impulsive effect will stay active for a period of time which cannot be ignored. Obviously, the traditional instantaneous impulsive system models cannot describe the above process. Then in this paper, considering the actuator saturation and non-instantaneous impulse existing in the real environment, we formulate the new models to describe the nonlinear intermittent control system subject to actuator saturation with non-instantaneous impulsive effects occurring at the moments of system switching. Some exponential stability criteria of this considered intermittent control systems in the form of matrix inequalities are first put forward. Meanwhile, some LMI optimization problems are also proposed to design the control gain for estimating the attraction domain with a fixed decay rate. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the obtained theoretical results.

Abstract China accounts for around 50 % of the global vegetable harvested area which is expected to increase continuously. Large cropland areas, including rice paddy, have been converted into vegetable cultivation to feed an increasingly affluent population and increase farmers' incomes. However, little information is available on the balance between economic benefits and environmental impacts upon rice paddy conversion into vegetable fields, especially during the initial conversion period. Herein, the life cycle assessment approach was applied to compare the differences in agricultural input costs, yield incomes, net economic benefits (NEB), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) footprints and net ecosystem economic benefits (NEEB) between the double rice paddy (Rice) and newly vegetable field (Veg) converted from Rice based on a four-year field experiment. Results showed that yield incomes from Veg increased by 96-135 %, outweighing the increased agricultural input costs due to higher inputs of labor and pesticide, thus significantly increasing NEB by 80-137 %, as compared to Rice. Rice conversion into Veg largely increased C footprints by 2.3-10 folds and N footprints by 1.1-2.6 folds, consequently increasing the environmental damage costs (EDC) by 2.2 folds on average. The magnitudes of increases in C and N footprints and EDC due to conversion strongly declined over time. The NEEB, the trade-offs between NEB and EDC, decreased by 18 % in the first year, while increasing by 63 % in the second year and further to 135 % in the fourth year upon conversion. These results suggested that rice paddy conversion into vegetable cultivation could increase the NEB at the expense of enhanced EDC, particular during the initial conversion years. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of introducing interventions to mitigate C and N footprints from newly converted vegetable field, so as to maximize NEEB and realize the green and sustainable vegetable production.

Abstract This paper investigates the issue of cluster synchronization (CS) for the coupled neural networks (CNNs) with time-varying delays via the delay-dependent distributed impulsive control. A new Halanay-like inequality, where delayed impulses are taken into consideration, is proposed. Based on the Lyapunov theory and the new differential inequality, sufficient conditions of CS for delayed CNNs with fixed and switching coupling topology are obtained, respectively. Moreover, delay-dependent distributed impulsive controllers with fixed or switching topology are designed thereby. Finally, we present a numerical example of CNNs with fixed or switching coupling to verify the effectiveness of our results, respectively.

Abstract CDK8 is an important member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family associated with transcription and acts as a key "molecular switch" in the Mediator complex. CDK8 regulates gene expression by phosphorylating transcription factors and can control the transcription process through Mediator complex. Previous studies confirmed that CDK8 is an important oncogenic factor, making it a potential tumor biomarker and a promising target for tumor therapy. However, CDK8 has also been confirmed to be a tumor suppressor, indicating that it not only promotes the development of tumors but may also be involved in tumor suppression. Therefore, the dual role of CDK8 in the process of tumor development is worth further exploration and summary. This comprehensive review delves into the intricate involvement of CDK8 in transcription-related processes, as well as its role in signaling pathways related to tumorigenesis, with a focus on its critical part in driving cancer progression.

Abstract Precise design of high efficacious catalysts and the insight into the mechanism for photo-electrocoupling catalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) are two major issues for the development and practical application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, a novel self-standing three-dimensional nanosheet assembly PdAu nanoflower with local surface plasmon resonance effect is fabricated to acquire excellent catalytic performance and explore the photo-electrocatalytic mechanism for MOR. Interestingly, the Pd₁Au₁ nanoflower electrocatalyst exhibits superior mass activity than pure Pd and Pd/C catalysts thanks to the abundant active sites and efficacious charge transfer. Further on, with the assistance of LSPR effect, the catalytic activity for MOR of Pd₁Au₁ catalyst (4179.04 mA mg⁻¹Pd) under visible light illumination achieved 2.41-fold than dark conditions (1731.42 mA mg⁻¹Pd). Moreover, the long-term durability of Pd₁Au₁ catalysts with visible light is also improved compare to dark condition and other mentioned Pd catalyst. More significantly, a photo-electrocoupling CO-free dominant mechanism is proposed to in-depth understand the promotion of catalytic activity and durability for MOR. This contribution provides the rational design of plasma-enhanced high-effective photo-electrocatalyst and reveals a CO-free dominant MOR mechanism for the progress of future liquid direct fuel cells.

Abstract In an adiabatic compressed air energy storage system, the significance of ambient temperature variation to determine the components’ off-design operation and system performance was not clear yet. In this paper, a dynamic model of the concerned system considering off-design operation of components and real fluid behavior was established. Design and off-design performance of components and system, as well as the relationship between each component, were investigated under various ambient temperatures. The link between ambient temperature variation and system capacity was elucidated. Results showed that as ambient temperature declined, the total compression ratio of compressor unit increased, whereas the storage pressure of air chamber first increased, then reached a plateau. Compared to design condition, 4.83% higher turbine power and 7.53% higher round trip efficiency were obtained at higher ambient temperatures. At lower ambient temperatures, system efficiency was reduced by up to 4.85%, but output work remained practically unchanged. To improve the off-design performance at lower ambient temperatures, a control strategy of thermal energy storage was proposed. The round trip efficiency and output work were improved by 7.7%–11.3% and 5.3%–7.2% with the proposed operation strategy, which were 5.9%–7.0% and 4.5%–4.8% higher than those under design condition.
