Abstract Objectives: The objective of the present narrative review was to evaluate the evidence of a possible association between periodontitis and COVID-19, and its biological plausibility, using as models the potential associations with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and some respiratory diseases.
Methods: A recent systematic review was used as main reference to explore the associations of periodontitis with different respiratory diseases, including COVID-19, following two focussed questions: a PECOS question, aimed to explore epidemiological evidence, and a PICOS question, designed to explore the evidence derived from intervention studies. In addition to that evidence, other relevant scientific documents, including consensus papers, were carefully selected and appraised.
Findings: Convincing evidence was found to support the association of periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and some respiratory diseases. The biological plausibility behind those associations is based on four factors: (1) bacteraemia of oral bacteria and periodontal pathogens, (2) increased systemic inflammation, (3) common genetic factors, and (4) common environmental risk factors. Limited initial evidence is available to support an association between periodontitis and COVID-19 complications. Among the proposed factors to explain the suggested association, a combination of the previously mentioned factors, plus additional factors related with SARS-CoV-2 characteristics and pathogenicity, has been suggested.
Conclusions: Initial evidence suggests that periodontitis may be associated with a more severe COVID-19 and with a higher risk of death due to COVID-19.
Clinical relevance: Due to the possible association between periodontitis and an increased severity for COVID-19, additional efforts should be made to improve oral and periodontal health, including the promotion of oral healthy habits, such as oral hygiene.

Abstract Background: The objective was to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the subgingival cultivable bacteria in Albanian subjects and to compare it with a similar Spanish population.
Materials and methods: Consecutive patients, diagnosed as periodontitis in stages I-II or III-IV, and as periodontally healthy or with gingivitis, were studied clinically and microbiologically by means of microbiological culture, including total anaerobic counts, proportions, and frequency of detection of target species. Outcome variables were analysed by Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA, ANCOVA and Chi-square tests.
Results: In this cross-sectional study, 83 (Albania) and 90 (Spain) subjects were included. No statistically significant differences were observed between test and control populations regarding demographic variables or smoking habit. Significantly higher total anaerobic counts in the Albanian population (p = 0.022) were observed, especially in the periodontal health/gingivitis group (p = 0.001). In the test population, the proportions of the cultivable bacteria of Fusobacterium nucleatum were significantly lower in both the healthy/gingivitis (p = 0.022) and stages I-II periodontitis (p = 0.034) groups.
Conclusions: The subgingival cultivable bacteria in both periodontitis and non-periodontitis subjects from Albania showed significantly higher total anaerobic counts and lower proportions of the cultivable bacteria of F. nucleatum than a similar population of subjects from Spain.

Abstract The Right to be informed and to inform has undergone a real revolution in what refers to the current vast range of possibilities. The liberation of the information services underwent a decisive step with the opening of the informative offer, but the arrival of the Internet, and its immeasurable immensity of information sources, has ended up forging Galeano’s thesis in which he assured that more and more people have the right to listen and look, but fewer and fewer people have the privilege to report, think and create. This type of law sui generis seems to have ended up transforming in recent years the fundamental right of access to information and to inform, into a dictatorship of the word and the unique image that Galeano considered even more devastating than that arising from a single-party system. Not only because of the risks involved in spreading falsehood; also for imposing a way of life that states as an exemplary citizen a docile consumer and a passive spectator who seems to have been molded at the whim of the commercial information society model.A good example of this is the media management of the health crisis around COVID-19. An epidemic with remote origins but which has ended up spreading infinitely more quickly than the media had intended in order to reassure citizens and try to ensure the continuity of the markets. All this has generated the disaster and the dramatic consequences that we are all suffering.Received: 02.04.2020Accepted: 12.06.2020Published online: 03.07.2020

Abstract Introduction: Engineered bone graft substitutes are a promising alternative and supplement to autologous bone grafts as treatments for bone healing impairment. Advances in human medicine extend an invitation to pursue these biomimetic strategies in animal patients, substantiated by the theory that specialized scaffolds, multipotent cells, and biological cues may be combined into a bioactive implant intended for the enhancement of tissue regeneration.
Methods: This proof-of-concept study was designed to evaluate and validate the feasibility of beta-tricalcium phosphate foam scaffolds seeded with canine mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue. Cell-inoculated samples and sham controls were cultured statically for 72 hours in complete growth medium to evaluate seeding capacity, while a subset of loaded scaffolds was further induced with osteogenic culture medium for 21 days. Produced implants were characterized and validated with a combination of immunofluorescence and reflection confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction to confirm osteogenic differentiation in tridimensional-induced samples.
Results: After 72 hours of culture, all inoculated scaffolds presented widespread yet heterogeneous surface seeding, distinctively congregating stem cells around pore openings. Furthermore, at 21 days of osteogenic culture conditions, robust osteoblastic differentiation of the seeded cells was confirmed by the change of cell morphology and evident deposition of extra-cellular matrix, accompanied by mineralization and scaffold remodeling; furthermore, all induced cell-loaded implants lost specific stemness immunophenotype expression and simultaneously upregulated genomic expression of osteogenic genes Osterix and Ostecalcin.
Conclusions: β-TCP bio-ceramic foam scaffolds proved to be suitable carriers and hosts of canine adipose-derived MSCs, promoting not only surface attachment and proliferation, but also demonstrating strong

Title translation Systolic blood pressure reduction in patients with intracranial hemorrhage and functional prognosis.
Abstract Background: Acute intracerebral hemorrhage affects annually more than 1 million people worldwide. Chronic systemic arterial hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.
Objective: To determine the relationship between the decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP) in patients with intracranial hemorrhage and their short-term functional prognosis.
Material and methods: Observational, longitudinal, prospective study in patients with intraparenchymal hemorrhage secondary to hypertensive dyscontrol, older than 18 years, of both sexes. Blood pressure was recorded at admission, every hour during the first 6 hours and every two hours from 8 to 24 hours after admission. Functionality was assessed using the modified Rankin scale at admission, at 6 and 24 hours after admission.
Results: 58 patients were included, in whom the reduction of systolic blood pressure at admission was 17.04% and at 24 hours was 31.3 mm Hg; the mean systolic blood pressure was 183.62 mm Hg as opposed to 152.3 mm Hg at discharge (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: In the first 6 hours, reduction in ASR is significantly associated with hospital outcome in patients with intracranial hemorrhage. A linear association was observed with improvement and favorable functional prognosis as measured by the modified Rankin scale.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a supportive peri-implant care (SPIC) protocol after surgical therapy of peri-implantitis, combining ultrasonic mechanical debridement and glycine powder air polishing.
Materials and methods: Thirty subjects diagnosed with peri-implantitis and treated by means of access flap were randomized 6 months later into two different SPIC groups: the test group combined a piezoelectric ultrasonic instrumentation with a specific implant PEEK tip and glycine powder air polishing, while control group received the same ultrasonic instrumentation together with a rubber cup and a polishing paste. Patients were followed for 12 months, with intermediate SPIC visits every 3 months. Clinical, radiological, microbiological and biochemical outcome variables were registered and calculated.
Results: After 12 months of SPIC, probing depths (PD) showed a mean reduction of 0.33 ± 0.11 mm, with significant differences (p < .001) between the test (-0.84 ± 0.43 mm) and the control group (+0.18 ± 0.73 mm). Healthy peri-implant tissues defined by PD <5 mm, absence of BoP (or in only one site around the implant), and no additional bone loss (<0.5 mm), were observed at the final visit in 83% of the implants (87% in the test group and 80% in the control group, p = .255). No adverse events were reported by the subjects participating in the study.
Conclusions: The SPIC protocol including mechanical ultrasonic debridement and glycine powder air-polishing demonstrated significantly better efficacy in terms of PD reductions. A strict SPIC protocol can maintain for 1 year, or even improve, the results obtained after surgical treatment of peri-implantitis.
