Abstract Malaria remains a public health problem and a leading cause of death worldwide. Consequently, the discovery of novel agents, including substances from medicinal plants, is urgently needed. Piper nigrum has long been used by the community in the treatment of the symptoms of malaria. In a previous study, Piper nigrum was demonstrated to exhibit promising antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 and INDO strains. The aim of this study was to further investigate the antimalarial activity (curative and prophylactic) of piperine (a major isolated constituent of Piper nigrum) in Plasmodium berghei ANKA-infected mice. Piperine 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg body weight (bw), artesunate 5 mg/kg bw, and DMSO were administered orally for four days to different groups of Swiss Webster mice. Then, mice were monitored for parasitaemia, body weight, rectal temperature, survival rate, and clinical parameters. Piperine 40 mg/kg bw in curative and prophylactic tests had the maximum parasitaemia chemosuppression of 79.21% and 58.8% (p < 0.05), respectively, with a significant effect on the survival rate compared with control animals. In the curative test, piperine 40 mg/kg bw reduced the mean clinical score compared with the control group. Additionally, piperine showed an ability to protect organs (lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys) from some damage in a dose-dependent manner. This study can be used as a basis for further discovery of novel chemotherapeutic or chemoprophylactic compounds.

Abstract Malaria remains a significant global health problem, but the development of effective antimalarial drugs is challenging due to the parasite’s complex life cycle and lack of knowledge about the critical specific stages. Medicinal plants have been investigated as adjuvant therapy for malaria, so this systematic review summarizes 46 primary articles published until December 2020 that discuss curcumin and piperine as antimalarial agents. The selected articles discussed their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptosis properties, as well as their mechanism of action against Plasmodium species. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant, damages parasite DNA, and may promote an immune response against Plasmodium by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), while piperine is also a potent antioxidant that potentiates the effects of curcumin. Hence, combining these compounds is likely to have the same effect as chloroquine, that is, attenuate and restrict parasite development, thereby reducing parasitemia and increasing host survival. This systematic review presents new information regarding the development of a curcumin-piperine combination for future malaria therapy.

Abstract Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types suffered by women in the world. In 2018, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimated number of cancer cases in Indonesia was 42.1 per 100000 females, while the death rate was 17 per 100000 females. These conditions are worrisome and call for serious handling. For this purpose, the effectiveness of patient treatment and life quality must be improved. Therefore, this study aims to improve the knowledge and skills of breast cancer early detection. The method used is health training through audio-visual devices and demonstration. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was carried out using paired t-test. The s ampling data was acquired by purposive sampling method using a questionnaire. The result showed that first, majority of health cadres (97%) had less knowledge about BSE, before the training was carrying out. Second, lack of knowledge about BSE apparently did not prevent health cadres from doing BSE (28%). Third, BSE training improves the skills of health cadres with an average increase of 31%. Fourth, the training has also increased the knowledge of all cadres about BSE with an average increase of 29%. In addition, all cadres stated that they would disseminate their BSE knowledge and skills to their families and others. Kanker payudara merupakan salah satu jenis kanker yang paling banyak di derita oleh wanita di dunia. International Agency for Reseach on Cancer (IARC) pada tahun 2018 memperkirakan insiden kanker payudara di Indonesia sebesar 42.1 per 100 ribu wanita, sedangkan angka kematiannya sebesar 17 per 100 ribu penduduk. Abstract More than 6,000,000 people have died due to the coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic. This disease spread quickly due to its highly contagious nature. The SARS‐CoV‐2 virus that causes the disease can be transmitted through saliva droplets secreted by infected people at a distance of less than 1 m. As a result, saliva has been accepted as an alternative specimen for COVID‐19 detection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Furthermore, WHO recommended the use of rapid antigen tests based on lateral flow immunoassay when reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) is not available. We developed a saliva‐based rapid antigen test by optimizing the antibody concentration and optimum pH for the conjugation of antibody and gold nanoparticles. We found that the best running buffer formulation consisted of 75 mM sodium phosphate buffer, 1% NaCl, 1% Triton X‐100, 0.5% N‐acetyl‐L‐cysteine, and 0.02% sodium azide. The addition of a mucolytic agent in the buffer can reduce the viscosity of saliva, thus improving sensitivity. The rapid test developed detected the lowest concentration of nucleocapsid protein at 0.1 μg/mL. Our study revealed 100% specificity against negative COVID‐19 saliva and no cross‐reaction with avian influenza virus hemagglutinin.

Abstract Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease among Indonesian women. The etiology of breast cancer is still uncertain, and therefore adequate primary prevention is difficult. Early diagnosis improves cancer prognosis while also reducing medical costs, substantially reducing mortality rates. Knowledge and awareness of breast cancer risk factors and their screening may help women take preventive measures. The community service program aimed to assess the level of understanding of undergraduate medical students on breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE). It was a one-group pretest-postest quasi-experimental study to measure the level of knowledge of 100 medical students in Indonesia from August 20th, 2020, to February 27th, 2021. The participants were asked 36 questions, which was an adaptation of previous questionnaires. A mini-lecture managed the program that focuses on risk factors and early detection. Furthermore, pretest and post-test were conducted to analyze the knowledge level before and after the dissemination. The participants included in this study were mostly 20 years and above (62%). The average recognition of breast cancer and its early detection was not high. The knowledge of breast cancer among medical students was found to be moderate. The efficacy of dissemination among medical students was apparent in knowledge change. However, good cancer awareness, especially breast cancer, needs to be established and integrated through effective cancer educational programs in the medical curricula. Hence, modification of the medical curriculum through extensive training on breast cancer preventive measures and early diagnosis is required.
