Abstract By introducing compulsory antiseptic measures in 1881, the Austrian Empire became a trendsetter in European midwifery legislation. Starting with the focus on puerperal infection in the 1870s, this article investigates the process from the first proposal of antiseptic regimes within a clinical setting to the dissemination of antiseptic knowledge among the midwifery profession. Competition between the leading medical men throughout the Austrian territories played a major role and influenced the way in which antiseptic measures were propagated. The article identifies the antiseptic collectives active at the leading universities of Prague and Vienna. As practical instruction during midwifery education was not regarded as sufficient, the late 1870s and 1880s saw the emergence of several instruction textbooks. Changing birth attendance routines and the innovative materials that entered midwifery practice are explored and discussed, based on these manuals, alongside evidence of midwives' reactions as published in the Austrian Midwifery Newspaper.

Title translation Women's complaint leadership in the Causa Kleinwächter. A contribution to patient history of the Innsbruck maternity hospital.
Abstract On the basis of the Innsbruck Maternity Clinic this paper deals with the individual and collective worlds of experience of obstetric patients. However, not only the patient's view on the proceedings in this specific medical space is being reconstructed, also the prevailing conventions surrounding the treatment of pregnant, parturient and puerperal patients serving as clinical material in obstetric research and education are critically scrutinised. At the centre of this paper stands Dr. Ludwig Kleinwächter's period of duty, who acted as professor for obstetrics and gynaecology in Innsbruck between 1877 and 1881. During this period numerous conflicts regarding the treatment of patients are documented. Concerned about the good reputation of the Maternity Clinic, the Tyrolean State Committee, as the Clinic's provider, tried to solve the crisis. The existing letters of complaint and protocols do not only give a voice to the women concerned, but also to the medical professions as well as the local political representatives involved.

Title translation Countryside obstetrics--Dr. Franz von Ottenthal and the South Tyrolean Medical Market (1860-1869).
Abstract The paper focuses on the structure of the obstetric market in a rural region of alpine South Tyrol (today: Italy) throughout the 1860s. Besides midwives and parturient women, also male obstetricians are traceable in the actual research area of the Tauferer Ahrntal. Among them was the general practitioner Dr. Franz von Ottenthal, whose medical records (Historiae Morborum, 1847-1899) are used to reconstruct the participation of physicians in the obstetric market. Special emphasis lies on the evaluation of the predominant hierarchies (midwives/surgeons/physicians) and the position of Franz von Ottenthal in this specialized medical sub-segment. Therefore, the quantitative extent of obstetric intervention as well as the qualitative dimension of treatments (medication, surgeries) is investigated. So far, the relevance of Ottenthals obstetric practice as to the gender ratio has been measured as rather high, considering that he generally treated more female than male patients. An attempt will be made to estimate the significance of the obstetric segment within his practice in order to find an explanatory approach for the higher female medical demand.
