Title translation From the first kidney transplants to the current pediatric kidney transplant.
Abstract Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal failure in children but remains a rare procedure with only 100 to 120 pediatric kidney transplants per year in France. Although the main principles of kidney transplantation are the same in children and adults, some specificities regarding underlying kidney diseases, surgical technique, immunosuppressive drugs metabolism and the risk of infectious complications require a specific expertise to care for these patients. Similarly, the major morbidity of dialysis in children and the need for repeated transplants during the patient's life justify pediatric specificities in the choice of donors and the allocation of grafts in most kidney allocation systems worldwide. The objectives of this review are to present the history and specificities of pediatric kidney transplantation, to describe the current activity in France and to discuss future developments while emphasizing the need for basic and clinical research focused on the pediatric population.

Abstract Nationally, many adolescents remain at risk for unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. School nurses can be leaders and change agents in their schools. This article shares the journey of a school nurse in Maine, who used evidence-based data to develop support from administration and key stakeholders to successfully advocate for a needed policy change. That support and advocacy led to a new "Safer Sex" policy.

Abstract Robotic reconstructions of large diaphragmatic defects with mesh reconstructions are rare in the literature. We present a case of a complicated diaphragmatic defect, in an adult with trisomy 21, which was successfully repaired robotically with double mesh reinforcement. The meshes were sutured together via a separate suture in the middle to avoid fluid accumulation between them. The patient recovered quickly and uneventfully. On follow-up, he reported no pain, and his performance score improved dramatically. We present this complicated reconstruction in this specific patient, who we think benefitted from avoiding a thoraco-abdominal incision, demonstrating the merits of persevering with a robotic approach.

Abstract Thoracic endometriosis syndrome is an under-recognised manifestation of endometriosis and includes catamenial pneumothorax, catamenial haemothorax, catamenial haemoptysis and pulmonary nodules. Catamenial pneumothorax presents as recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax with a temporal relationship to the onset of menses, affecting mostly the right lung. A 48-year-old woman presented with an eight-year history of right-sided catamenial pneumothorax, during which time she had three episodes of pneumothorax. Serial chest imaging revealed an enlarging mass overlying the right hemi-diaphragm. She was referred to our trust where she underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for right pleurectomy. Intraoperatively, defects were found in the right hemidiaphragm, through which parts of the liver had herniated. We describe the presenting features and management of catamenial pneumothorax.

Abstract The Middle East Asia Minor 1 biotype of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a greenhouse and field crop pest of global significance. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of the generalist predatory thrips, Franklinothrips vespiformis Crawford (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae), as a biological control agent for B. tabaci. This was achieved by determining the functional responses of F. vespiformis larvae and adults to the egg and nymphal stages of B. tabaci under laboratory conditions. Analyses consisted of 10 replicates of each predator and prey stage combination on bean leaf discs for a 24-h period. Following logistic regression analyses to determine the functional response type exhibited, response parameters were estimated with nonlinear least squares regression using Roger's equation. Results showed that F. vespiformis larvae and adults exhibited a Type II functional response when feeding on immature B. tabaci. The handling times (Th) of F. vespiformis larvae and adults were magnitudes higher for B. tabaci nymphs than they were for eggs, which were in part driven by the higher attack rates (a) observed on eggs. The maximum attack rate (T/Th) for B. tabaci eggs and nymphs exhibited by first-stage larvae, second-stage larvae, and adult F. vespiformis increased with increasing predator age. Results from this study suggest that F. vespiformis larvae and particularly adults are promising biological control agents for B. tabaci and are efficient predators at both low and high prey densities.
