Abstract This study examined 184 legionellosis outbreaks in the United States reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System, from 2001 to 2017. Drinking water characteristics examined include source water type, disinfectant type, exposure setting, geographical distribution by U.S. Census Divisions, and the public water system size (population served). This study found that most of the reported drinking water-associated legionellosis outbreaks occurred in eastern United States, including 35% in the South Atlantic, 32% in the Middle Atlantic, and 16% in the East North Central Census Divisions were linked with building water systems in healthcare and hotel settings; and were associated with buildings receiving drinking water from public water systems serving >10,000 people. Targeted evaluations and interventions may be useful to further determine the combination of factors, such as disinfectant residual type and drinking water system size that may lead to legionellosis outbreaks.

Abstract Background: Suicide is a problem worldwide and occupation is an important risk factor. In the last decade, 55 200 deaths in the US were attributed to occupational risk factors.
Objective: To determine if toxic metal exposure was associated with suicide risk among Paducah gaseous diffusion plant (PGDP) workers.
Methods: We assembled a cohort of 6820 nuclear industry workers employed from 1952 to 2003. A job-specific exposure matrix (JEM) was used to determine metal exposure likelihood. Uranium exposure was also assessed by urinalysis. All suicide/self-injury International Classification for Disease (ICD) codes were used to identify suicides. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR), odds ratios (OR), and hazard ratios (HR) were used to estimate suicide risk.
Results: PGDP suicide victims typically were younger white men. Within exposure likelihood categories, several suicide SMRs were typically elevated for several metals. Only beryllium exposure likelihood was associated with an increased HR. Uranium urine concentration was associated with an elevated suicide risk after stratification by urinalysis frequency.
Conclusion: Suicide risk is associated with uranium exposure.

Abstract Managing the growing quantity of used electronic equipment poses challenges for waste management officials. In this paper, we focus on a large component of the electronic waste stream— computer monitors-and the disposal concerns associated with the lead embodied in cathode ray tubes (CRTs) used in most monitors. We develop a policy simulation model of consumers- disposal options based on the costs of these options and their associated environmental impacts. For the stock of monitors disposed of in the United States in 1998, our preliminary findings suggest that bans on some disposal options would increase disposal costs from about $1 per monitor to between $3 and $20 per monitor. Policies to promote a modest amount of recycling of monitor parts, including lead, can be less expensive. In both cases, the costs of the policies exceed the value of the avoided health effects of CRT disposal.
