Abstract Accurately measuring systemic risk in the banking industry and identifying systemically important banks are significant parts of macro-prudential supervision. However, there is a lack of research on measuring systemic risk and identifying important banks under the same framework. And there are relatively few studies comparing different indicators of systemically important banks in the context of China's banking industry. Therefore, this paper first constructs a new Merton model to measure the dynamically evolving systemic risk of China's banking system. Then combine the Merton model with the Shapley value to construct the Merton-Shapley framework, and propose a new indicator MShv to identify systemically important banks. At last, use the data of China's banking industry from 2006 to 2019 to conduct an empirical study. The research results show that the systemic risk in China peaked in 2008 and 2015 near the stock market crash, after 2008 the risk appeared a fluctuating decline. And it is found that MShv can accurately identify important banks and simultaneously is conducive to policy implementation. By a comparison between MShv and other systemic risk contribution indicators such as ΔCoVaR, MES, and SRISK, we find that there are many differences for different indicators in the applicability of identifying systemically important banks, the information reflected, and so on. Regulators can consider using several indicators synthetically to supervise banks during different risk periods, in order to maintain the stability of the financial system.

Abstract The research of financial systemic risk is an important issue, however the research on the financial systemic risk in ASEAN region lacks. This paper uses the minimum density method to calculate the interbank network of ASEAN countries and uses the node centrality to judge the systemically important banks of various countries. Then the DebtRank algorithm is constructed to calculate the systemic risk value based on the interbank network. By comparing the systemic risk values obtained through the initial impact on the system important banks and non-important banks, we find that the systemic risk tends to reach the peak in the case of the initial impact on the system important banks. Furthermore, it is found that countries with high intermediary centrality and closeness centrality have higher systemic risk. It suggests that the regulatory authorities should implement legal supervision, strict supervision, and comprehensive supervision for key risk areas and weak links.

Abstract In this paper, we consider the estimation method for the partially linear single-index model with endogenous regressors in the linear part. The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) using instrumental variables is applied to cope with the problem that the parameter estimators may be inconsistent due to endogeneity. The GMM estimation is based on an iterative procedure, which has generalized the well known Minimum Average conditional Variance Estimation (MAVE) method, in the sense that in each iteration the estimates of the nonparametric components and the parameter vectors are obtained from the generalized moments equation instead of the least squares optimization. A specific algorithm to implement the estimation procedure concerning the choice of the instruments is provided. Asymptotic properties of the estimators are also established. Simulated experiments show that the proposed estimation method performs well in finite samples. Application to the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Men data illustrates the proposed model and method in analyzing the returns to schooling.

Abstract Aberrant expression of critical components of the trans-acting super-enhancers (SE) complex contributes to the continuous and robust transcription of oncogenes in human cancers. Small-molecule inhibitors targeting core-transcriptional components such as transcriptional bromodomain protein 4 (BRD4) and cyclin-dependent kinase 7 (CDK7) have been developed and are currently undergoing preclinical and clinical testing in several malignant cancers. By analysis of TCGA data and clinical specimens, we demonstrated that BRD4 and CDK7 were frequently overexpressed in human HCCs and were associated with the poor prognosis. Shorter survival and poorly differentiated histology were linked to high BRD4 or CDK7 expression levels. Interestingly, co-overexpression of BRD4 and CDK7 was a more unfavorable prognostic factor in HCC. Treatment with JQ1 or THZ1 alone exhibited an inhibitory impact on the proliferation of HCC cells, while JQ1 synergized with THZ1 showed a more pronounced suppression. Concurrently, a combined JQ1 and THZ1 treatment abolished the transcription of oncogenes ETV4, MYC, NFE2L2. Our study suggested that BRD4 and CDK7 coupled can be a valuable biomarker in HCC diagnosis and the combination of JQ1 and THZ1 can be a promising therapeutic treatment against HCC.

Abstract It is critical to accurately align a quantum photon detector such as a superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) to an optical fiber in order to optimize its detection efficiency. Conventionally, such alignment requires advanced infrared imaging equipment or sophisticated microfabrication. We introduce a novel technique based on the simple idea of reflected wave intensity measurement which allows to determine the boundary of the sensor and align it accurately with the fiber. By routing a light wave through an optical fiber for normal incidence on the surface of the sensor chip, and separating the reflected wave coupled back into the fiber from the input signal with a circulator, we can observe the variation in the reflected wave intensity when the beam spot of the fiber crosses the boundary between the sensor and substrate that have different reflectivity, and adjust the position of the fiber such that its output falls on the sensor. We evaluate quantitatively the precision of our alignment method, as well as the conditions that must be met to avoid photon loss caused by light beam divergence. After demonstrating the working principle of our scheme and verifying the alignment result experimentally, we employ it for efficient input signal coupling to a TES device, which is used for photon-number-resolving measurement to showcase the successful application of our alignment method in practice. Relying on only ordinary and widely used optical elements that are easy to operate and low in cost, our solution is much less demanding than conventional methods. Dramatically easier to implement and not restricted by the detection mechanism of the sensor, it is accessible to a much broader community.

Abstract Preventing high concentrations of fine particulate (PM2.5) to realize the goal of sustainable development is becoming a challenge for rapidly urbanized cities. Increasing vehicle emission due to inefficient urban form is thought to be the main cause of traffic congestion and increased PM2.5 concentrations. Previous efforts attributing PM2.5 concentrations to urban forms are yet to reach consistent conclusions on practical environmental protection strategies. In this study, we considered urban compositions and their spatial configuration to propose a new measurement—urban configuration—and document the effects of urban configuration on PM2.5 concentrations. Using 330 Chinese cities as our sample, we found that the areas of two types of urban facilities, namely, residence and industry, are positively related to PM2.5 concentrations, and the area of public service facilities is negatively related to PM2.5 concentrations. Regarding the spatial configuration of different urban compositions, we documented that residence–industry accessibility is a key factor of PM2.5 concentrations and plays a more important role than the residence–commerce accessibility. We also compared the influence of two accessibility indices (distance- and gravity-based accessibilities) and further found that the effect of reducing the residence–industry distance is more remarkable than the effect of increasing residential or industrial area on reducing PM2.5 concentrations. Our results indicate that the key to reaching sustainable urban expansion is to synchronize urban constructions with spatial configuration optimization. For Chinese cities, a 7.52% increase in residence area requires at least 1% decrease in the average residence–industry distance to eliminate the incremental effects of newly constructed residential region on PM2.5 concentrations. This study casts new light on the relationship between urban configuration and PM2.5 concentration and provides decision makers practical and realistic approaches in realizing sustainable ...

Abstract After the financial crisis triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States in 2008, many scholars believed that the unstable transmission of shadow banking business in the banking system is the main factor causing financial turmoil. This paper proposes a dynamic complex interbank network system model with shadow banking in which the dynamic complex interbank network system differs from the traditional banking network and is formed by the interrelated business between shadow banks and commercial banks to explore the effect of shadow banking on the systemic risk. The results show that the existence of shadow banking will increase the systemic risk, accelerate the speed of bankruptcy of banks, reduce the survival ratio of banks, and increase the strength of central bank assistance. The smaller the number of shadow banks in the system, the higher the degree of credit connection among commercial banks and the smaller the systemic risk.

Abstract BackgroundJoint Commission International (JCI) accreditation plays a significant role in improving the quality of care and patient safety worldwide. Hospital leadership is critical in making international accreditation happen with successful implementation. Little is known about how Chinese hospital leaders experienced and perceived the impact of JCI accreditation. This paper is the first study to explore the perceptions of hospital leaders toward JCI accreditation in China.MethodsQualitative semi-structured interviews were used to explore the perceptions of the chief operating officers, the chief medical officers, and the chief quality officers in five JCI-accredited hospitals in China. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview transcripts and identify the main themes.ResultsFifteen hospital leaders participated in the interviews. Three themes emerged from the analysis, namely the motivations, challenges, and benefits related to pursuing and implementing JCI accreditation. The qualitative study found that eight factors influenced hospital leadership to pursue JCI accreditation, five challenges were identified with implementing JCI standards, and eight benefits emerged from the leadership perspective.ConclusionPursuing JCI accreditation is a discretionary decision by the hospital leadership. Participants were motivated by prevalent perceptions that JCI requirements would be used as a management tool to improve the quality of care and patient safety in their hospitals. These same organizational leaders identified challenges associated with implementing and sustaining JCI accreditation. The significant challenges were a clear understanding of the foreign accreditation standards, making staff actively participate in JCI processes, and changing staff behaviors accordingly. The top 5 perceived benefits to JCI accreditation from the leaders’ perspective were improved leadership and hospital safety, improvements in the care processes, and the quality of care and the learning culture improved.
