Abstract [Purpose] To clarify the inefficiency of wide-based walking from kinematic and exercise physiology perspectives. [Participants and Methods] Participants consisted of 20 healthy male university students who performed treadmill walking under conditions of normal walking and wide-based walking (20-cm stride width). The lateral center of gravity movement, gluteus medius muscle myoelectric activity, oxygen uptake, minute ventilation (tidal volume, respiratory rate), heart rate, blood pressure, and rating perceived exertion just before the end of constant load exercise (4.0 km/h) were compared between the two walking conditions. [Results] All the measured parameters except for tidal volume and diastolic blood pressure were significantly higher during wide-based walking than during normal walking. However, when Δ is the difference between the two conditions, no correlation was found between Δlateral center of gravity movement, Δgluteus medius muscle myoelectric activity, Δcardiopulmonary parameters, and Δrating perceived exertion. [Conclusion] Although the precise mechanisms underlying the inefficiency of wide-based walking could not be clarified, cardiopulmonary indices such as oxygen uptake were significantly higher during wide-based walking than during normal walking. This suggests that improvement of wide-based gait is warranted from a kinematic perspective and an exercise physiology perspective.

Abstract [Purpose] We aimed to determine the autonomic response in patients with rotator cuff tear-related nocturnal pain using nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-eight patients with nocturnal pain who were diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear and received steroid injections, and whose nocturnal pain improved, were divided into a control group (14 patients) and a failure group (14 patients). Pulse wave was measured continuously using BACS Advance equipment (TAOS Co.) for a total of 17 min: 5 min before isometric hand grip, 2 min during isometric hand grip, 5 min after isometric hand grip, and 10 min after isometric hand grip. The autonomic nervous system activity was assessed using detrended fluctuation analysis and approximate entropy. [Results] The α

Abstract We report the synthesis and microscopic investigations of two chiral helical porphyrin supramolecular polymers with different coordinating metals that are expected to be capable of serving as synthetic macromolecular motors driven by thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, based on their microscopic images, we propose a stepwise process for the formation of higher-order structures. These porphyrins formed completely different association states, and this was reflected in the marked differences in the shapes of the supramolecular polymers. The Cu-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymers formed H-aggregate rods in diisopropyl ether, then grew into superhelices and then into ribbons. On the other hand, Zn-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymers formed aggregates based on van der Waals interactions in diethyl ether, then grew into fibers and then grew into multiple-helices and ribbons. In addition, we imaged the interaction between long and short chains of the Cu-TChOAlaCPP supramolecular polymer by fast-scanning atomic force microscopy, and we indicated the availability as a macromolecular motor driven by thermal fluctuations.

Abstract Video analysis has become an essential aspect of net sports, such as badminton. Accurately predicting the future trajectory of balls and shuttlecocks can significantly benefit players by enhancing their performance and enabling them to devise effective game strategies. This paper aims to analyze data to provide players with an advantage in the fast-paced rallies of badminton matches. The paper delves into the innovative task of predicting future shuttlecock trajectories in badminton match videos and presents a method that takes into account both the shuttlecock position and the positions and postures of the players. In the experiments, players were extracted from the match video, their postures were analyzed, and a time-series model was trained. The results indicate that the proposed method improved accuracy by 13% compared to methods that solely used shuttlecock position information as input, and by 8.4% compared to methods that employed both shuttlecock and player position information as input.

Abstract Objective: The mean age of cancer diagnosis has decreased, while the mean age of first marriage and child delivery has increased in Japan in recent years. Accordingly, an increasing number of pregnant women are being diagnosed with cancer. Pregnant cancer patients must consider simultaneously receiving cancer treatment and continuing their pregnancy and make related decisions. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) who support patients and their families experience conflict over which care should be prioritized between that for the patient and that of the fetus. Supporting pregnant cancer patients and their families in such complicated situations is challenging. This study aimed to explore the process of support for continuing cancer treatment for, and pregnancy in, cancer patients, based on shared decision-making (SDM) between the patient, her family, and HCPs.
Methods: This was a qualitative, descriptive study carried out with six nurses, five clinicians, and three obstetricians with experience of providing decision-making support to a pregnant cancer patient and her family. Individual interviews and a focus group interview were conducted.
Results: We identified ten categories, of which the following five are integral to the process of providing support for pregnant cancer patients: "Preparing for SDM with the patient and her family;" "HCPs working in a team while clarifying their individual roles and responsibilities;" "confirming the intentions of the patient and her family in setting the orientation;" "improving the system for HCPs to provide support to the patient during cancer treatment," and "providing the patient with support that helps her make informed decisions."
Conclusions: Decision-making support is provided to both the patient and her family, and HCPs work in teams to provide support. Moreover, HCPs continue to provide support to the patient and her family after a decision has been made.

Abstract Objective Rapid eye movement (REM) obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by apnea and hypopnea events due to airway collapse occurring predominantly or exclusively during REM sleep. OSA is a potential risk factor for metabolic dysfunction. However, the association between REM OSA and risk of adverse health outcomes remains unclear. The present study investigated the association between REM OSA and metabolic syndrome (MetS), including the MetS components of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, in the Japanese population. Methods In total, 836 Japanese patients with mild to moderate OSA were enrolled in this study. We compared the prevalence of MetS, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, between REM OSA and non-REM OSA via univariate analyses of descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses. Results The prevalence of hypertension was 68.3% in the REM OSA group and 56.6% in the non-REM OSA group (p<0.05). In addition, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was significantly higher (37.0%) in the REM OSA group than in the non-REM-OSA group (25.2%). Logistic regression analyses showed that the prevalence of hypertension and MetS was significantly greater in the REM OSA group than in the non-REM-OSA group. Conclusion Our findings suggest that patients with REM OSA, regardless of age, sex, and body mass index, are at a higher risk of developing hypertension and MetS than patients with non-REM OSA.

Abstract Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly changed our daily life. Owing to the imposed restrictions, many educational facilities have introduced remote teaching. This study aims to clarify the association between remote teaching and Japanese university students' sleeping habits.
Methods: The participants were medical students at Aichi Medical University. We used data from an ongoing longitudinal sleeping habits survey. For the participants who enrolled in the university during 2018-2020, multilevel analyses of sleep duration during weekdays and weekends across 3 years were conducted, adjusting for sex, grade, place of stay, sleep problems and lifestyle habits.
Results: Among the students enrolled in the university, the data of 677 in 2018, 657 in 2019, and 398 in 2020 was available for analysis. The mean sleep duration during weekdays (in minutes) was 407.6 ± 60.3 in 2018, 406.9 ± 63.0 in 2019, and 417.3 ± 80.9 in 2020. The mean sleep duration during weekends (in minutes) was 494.5 ± 82.5 in 2018, 488.3 ± 87.9 in 2019, and 462.3 ± 96.4 in 2020. Multilevel analysis conducted for the 684 participants who enrolled during 2018-2020 showed that sleep duration during weekdays was associated with the place of stay and survey year. Moreover, students reported significantly longer sleep duration during weekdays in 2020 than in 2019, but no significant difference in sleep duration was found between 2018 and 2019. The other multilevel analysis found sleep duration during weekends to be associated with the survey year, sex and always doing something before going to bed. Sleep duration during weekends was shorter in 2020 than in 2019 and longer for male students and students who always do something before going to bed. Ten students were reported to have a delayed sleep phase in 2020.
Conclusions: Students' sleep duration increased during weekdays and decreased during weekends in 2020. This difference could be explained by the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of remote teaching.

Abstract Sarcopenic dysphagia is the term for swallowing difficulty associated with loss of mass, strength, and physical performance, which leads to increased pharyngeal residues. Unlike sarcopenia, presarcopenia is characterized by low muscle mass without decreased muscle strength or physical performance and can develop into dysphagia due to low skeletal muscle mass. This retrospective study investigated the impact of presarcopenic dysphagia (PSD) on 1-year mortality in patients with cancer and dysphagia who underwent a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). An operational definition of PSD based on presarcopenia and pharyngeal residues was adopted. The psoas muscle mass index (cm

Abstract Background: Enucleation has been reported as a minimally invasive surgery for Warthin's tumor (WT). However, the definite indications for enucleation have not been clarified.
Methods: Enucleation was indicated by the following findings: findings of WT, cystic fluid, or benign leukocytes by fine-needle aspiration cytology; a well-margined and homogeneous pattern on imaging; and a tumor location in the tail or preauricular area of the parotid gland. We reviewed 552 cases treated with parotid gland surgery in our hospital.
Results: A total of 108 tumors were treated with enucleation and included no malignant solid tumors or pleomorphic adenoma. Enucleation demonstrated low invasiveness and complication rates. Revision surgery for WT reappearance after enucleation was rare and showed minimal scarring, with a lower risk of facial weakness.
Conclusions: The indication criteria for enucleation were validated. Such enucleation is useful, as it is associated with minimal invasiveness, low complication rates, and safety in revision surgery.
