    Abstract Recent years have witnessed the tremendous success of diffusion models in data synthesis. However, when diffusion models are applied to sensitive data, they also give rise to severe privacy concerns. In this paper, we systematically present the first study about membership inference attacks against diffusion models, which aims to infer whether a sample was used to train the model. Two attack methods are proposed, namely loss-based and likelihood-based attacks. Our attack methods are evaluated on several state-of-the-art diffusion models, over different datasets in relation to privacy-sensitive data. Extensive experimental evaluations show that our attacks can achieve remarkable performance. Furthermore, we exhaustively investigate various factors which can affect attack performance. Finally, we also evaluate the performance of our attack methods on diffusion models trained with differential privacy.

    Abstract Diffusion models have been remarkably successful in data synthesis. Such successes have also driven diffusion models to apply to sensitive data, such as human face data, but this might bring about severe privacy concerns. In this work, we systematically present the first privacy study about property inference attacks against diffusion models, in which adversaries aim to extract sensitive global properties of the training set from a diffusion model, such as the proportion of the training data for certain sensitive properties. Specifically, we consider the most practical attack scenario: adversaries are only allowed to obtain synthetic data. Under this realistic scenario, we evaluate the property inference attacks on different types of samplers and diffusion models. A broad range of evaluations shows that various diffusion models and their samplers are all vulnerable to property inference attacks. Furthermore, one case study on off-the-shelf pre-trained diffusion models also demonstrates the effectiveness of the attack in practice. Finally, we propose a new model-agnostic plug-in method PriSampler to mitigate the property inference of diffusion models. PriSampler can be directly applied to well-trained diffusion models and support both stochastic and deterministic sampling. Extensive experiments illustrate the effectiveness of our defense and it makes adversaries infer the proportion of properties as close as random guesses. PriSampler also shows its significantly superior performance to diffusion models trained with differential privacy on both model utility and defense performance.

    Abstract Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have shown remarkable success in image synthesis, making GAN models themselves commercially valuable to legitimate model owners. Therefore, it is critical to technically protect the intellectual property of GANs. Prior works need to tamper with the training set or training process, and they are not robust to emerging model extraction attacks. In this paper, we propose a new ownership protection method based on the common characteristics of a target model and its stolen models. Our method can be directly applicable to all well-trained GANs as it does not require retraining target models. Extensive experimental results show that our new method can achieve the best protection performance, compared to the state-of-the-art methods. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with respect to the number of generations of model extraction attacks, the number of generated samples, different datasets, as well as adaptive attacks.

    Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the technique and practical significance of using a simple hernia needle in single-port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy in pediatric patients.
    Methods: The study conducted a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients who underwent treatment for inguinal hernia using single-port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy with a simple hernia needle at Yellow River Sanmenxia Hospital from June 2018 to May 2023. The medical records of all the children were collected, and clinical characteristics, procedural information, and follow-up data were carefully reviewed.
    Results: A total of 848 patients underwent inguinal hernia repair, with ages ranging from 7 months to 13 years (2.99 ± 2.49 years), including 756 males and 92 females. A total of 528 cases of unilateral hernia and 310 cases of bilateral hernia were reported, with intra-operative findings revealing contralateral occult hernia in 253 cases. Single-port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy was successfully completed in all patients, with no instances of conversion to open surgery. The mean operation time for unilateral hernia repair was (7.50 ± 4.80) min, while for bilateral hernia repair it was (11.55 ± 7.27) min. Five patients presented with subcutaneous emphysema, while two patients experienced a recurrence of inguinal hernia. No complications, such as scrotal hematoma, trocar umbilical hernia and testicular atrophy, were observed. The duration of the follow-up period ranged from 3 to 24 months.
    Conclusion: The promotion and utilization of single-port laparoscopy combined with a simple hernia needle in clinical practice are justified. Our initial investigation indicates that this surgical approach is both safe and dependable for the management of pediatric inguinal hernia. The procedure presents numerous benefits, including the utilization of uncomplicated instruments, straightforward operation, a clear curative impact, minimal tissue damage, rapid recovery, and the absence of scarring.

    Abstract With pixel miniaturization, the performance of high-resolution quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) usually degrades. Considering the dimension of ultrasmall pixels, herein, a barrier architecture based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that promotes the radiative recombination of neighboring quantum dots is rationally designed to improve the device performance. Au nanoparticles (NPs) are embedded in an insulating polymer to form a honeycomb-patterned barrier layer via the nanoimprint process. Each pixel fabricated in the void area (average diameter of 1.5 μm) of the barrier layer is surrounded by a number of LSPR-NPs to enhance the luminescence. The resultant green QLEDs with a resolution of 9027 pixels per inch show a maximum external quantum efficiency of 11.1%, a 42.8% enhancement compared to the control device. Additionally, the lifetime of high-resolution QLEDs is obviously improved by the LSPR effect.

    Abstract Kidney disease is a major driver of mortality among patients with diabetes and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is responsible for close to half of all chronic kidney disease cases. DKD usually develops in a genetically susceptible individual as a result of poor metabolic (glycemic) control. Molecular and genetic studies indicate the key role of podocytes and endothelial cells in driving albuminuria and early kidney disease in diabetes. Proximal tubule changes show a strong association with the glomerular filtration rate. Hyperglycemia represents a key cellular stress in the kidney by altering cellular metabolism in endothelial cells and podocytes and by imposing an excess workload requiring energy and oxygen for proximal tubule cells. Changes in metabolism induce early adaptive cellular hypertrophy and reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton. Later, mitochondrial defects contribute to increased oxidative stress and activation of inflammatory pathways, causing progressive kidney function decline and fibrosis. Blockade of the renin-angiotensin system or the sodium-glucose cotransporter is associated with cellular protection and slowing kidney function decline. Newly identified molecular pathways could provide the basis for the development of much-needed novel therapeutics.
