    Abstract An impediment to understanding the origin and dynamics of the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG)—the most pervasive large-scale biotic pattern on Earth—has been the tendency to focus narrowly on a single causal factor when a more synthetic, integrative approach is needed. Using marine bivalves as a model system and drawing on other systems where possible, we review paleobiologic and biogeographic support for two supposedly opposing views, that the LDG is shaped primarily by (a) local environmental factors that determine the number of species and higher taxa at a given latitude (in situ hypotheses) or (b) the entry of lineages arising elsewhere into a focal region (spatial dynamics hypotheses). Support for in situ hypotheses includes the fit of present-day diversity trends in many clades to such environmental factors as temperature and the correlation of extinction intensities in Pliocene bivalve faunas with net regional temperature changes. Support for spatial dynamics hypotheses includes the age-frequency distribution of bivalve genera across latitudes, which is consistent with an out-of-the-tropics dynamic, as are the higher species diversities in temperate southeastern Australia and southeastern Japan than in the tropical Caribbean. Thus, both in situ and spatial dynamics processes must shape the bivalve LDG and are likely to operate in other groups as well. The relative strengths of the two processes may differ among groups showing similar LDGs, but dissecting their effects will require improved methods of integrating fossil data with molecular phylogenies. We highlight several potential research directions and argue that many of the most dramatic biotic patterns, past and present, are likely to have been generated by diverse, mutually reinforcing drivers.

    Abstract Student evaluation of teaching (SET) questionnaires are ubiquitously applied in higher education institutions in North America for both formative and summative purposes. Data collected from SET questionnaires are usually item-level data with cross-classified structure, which are characterized by multivariate categorical outcomes (i.e., multiple Likert-type items in the questionnaires) and cross-classified structure (i.e., non-nested students and instructors). Recently, a new approach, namely the cross-classified IRT model, was proposed for appropriately handling SET data. To inform researchers in higher education, in this article, the cross-classified IRT model, along with three existing approaches applied in SET studies, including the cross-classified random effects model (CCREM), the multilevel item response theory (MLIRT) model, and a two-step integrated strategy, was reviewed. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the four approaches were also discussed. Additionally, the new and existing approaches were compared through an empirical data analysis and a preliminary simulation study. This article concluded by providing general suggestions to researchers for analyzing SET data and discussing limitations and future research directions.

    Abstract Background: After COVID-19, more and more travelers are more inclined to walk in cities, and the sensory elements of streets can have a significant impact on urban tourism. Local residents and travelers have different perceptions of the street and preferences for its use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and analyse the streets from the perspective of locals and travelers.
    Method: In this study, a questionnaire was designed to obtain local residents' and travelers' evaluations of the sensory elements of the street and a quadrant analysis of the street's sensory elements was carried out using the IPA-Kano model.
    Results: The results of the study show that travelers are particularly concerned about maps and signage guidance, while local residents are more concerned about the green environment of the surroundings and how well it is maintained.
    Conclusion: There is a difference in the indicators chosen by the two groups in the results of the comparison between locals and travelers, and this study is hoped to provide some data support for future urban managers and designers to learn from and refer to for street improvements and renewal.

    Abstract The study aims to promote network toxicology strategy to efficiently investigate the putative toxicity and underlying molecular mechanisms of environmental pollutants through an example of exploring brain injury induced by ATBC exposure. By utilizing ChEMBL, STITCH, GeneCards, and OMIM databases, we identified 213 potential targets associated with ATBC exposure and brain injury. Further refinements via STRING and Cytoscape software highlight 23 core targets, including AKT1, CASP3, and HSP90AA1. GO and KEGG pathway analysis conducted through DAVID and FUMA databases reveal that core targets of ATBC-induced brain toxicity are predominantly enriched in cancer signaling and neuroactive ligand receptor interaction pathways. Molecular docking was performed with Autodock, which confirmed robust binding between ATBC and core targets. Together, these findings suggest that ATBC may impact the occurrence and development of brain cancer and brain related inflammation, whereas pose risks for cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration, by modulating the apoptosis and proliferation of brain cancer cells, activating inflammatory signaling pathways, and regulating neuroplasticity. This research provides a theoretical basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of ATBC-induced brain toxicity, as well as establishing a foundation for the prevention and treatment of prostatic diseases associated with exposure to plastic products containing ATBC and certain ATBC-overwhelmed environments. Moreover, our network toxicology approach also expedites the elucidation of toxicity pathways for uncharacterized environmental chemicals.

    Abstract The study aimed to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of prostate injury induced by 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol (BPS) exposure and propose a novel research strategy to systematically explore the molecular mechanisms of toxicant-induced adverse health effects. By utilizing the ChEMBL, STITCH, and GeneCards databases, a total of 208 potential targets associated with BPS exposure and prostate injury were identified. Through screening the potential target network in the STRING database and Cytoscape software, we determined 21 core targets including AKT1, EGFR, and MAPK3. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses conducted through the DAVID database illustrated that the potential targets of BPS in prostatic toxicity were primarily enriched in cancer signaling pathways and calcium signaling pathways. These findings suggest that BPS may actively participate in the occurrence and development of prostate inflammation, prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and other aspects of prostate injury by regulating prostate cancer cell apoptosis and proliferation, activating inflammatory signaling pathways, and modulating prostate adipocytes and fibroblasts. This research provides a theoretical basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of underlying BPS-induced prostatic toxicity and establishes a foundation for the prevention and treatment of prostatic diseases associated with exposure to plastic products containing BPS and certain BPS-overwhelmed environments.

    Abstract Second/foreign language education has been approved emotionally tense due to its inherent challenges, adversities, complications, and ambiguities. These factors can affect various language teaching and learning domains. Hence, it is critical for EFL teachers to be buoyant and tolerant of ambiguity so that they can teach efficiently and prevent a sense of hopelessness that can damage everything. Although there are investigations on these variables in L2 contexts, their main focus has been on EFL students and teachers' perspectives have been largely ignored. Against this shortcoming, this study aimed to review the definitions, conceptualizations, and research findings related to teachers' academic buoyancy, ambiguity tolerance, and hopelessness. Moreover, practical implications for EFL teachers and teacher trainers are presented to increase their awareness of language teaching challenges and ways to overcome them. Finally, the study provides directions for future research.
