Abstract Background: Contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasonography (CEIOUS) and indocyanine green fluorescence were interesting tool for the visualization of intrahepatic neoplastic nodules. The combinations of the 2 technologies could increase tumor detection and the radicality of resection, allowing the use of a pure laparoscopic approach.
Methods: The patient was an 81-year-old man with a history of hypertension and treated hepatitis C infection, with a sustained serological response from 2018, previously undergoing laparotomic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in segment 8.During his regular hepatological follow-up, a 25 mm nodule was detected in segment 1, in a retrocaval position. Considering clinical presentation, good liver function (Child A5-MELD 8) and imaging, pure laparoscopic resection of the caudate lobe was performed using fluorescence imaging and CEIOUS navigation guidance.
Results: The operation last for 205 minutes. Blood loss was 100 mL and no blood transfusion was required. She resumed diet on the next day and was discharged 4 days after the operation. Histopathologic examination showed 27 mm HCC with a clear margin. Contrast computed tomography scan performed 3 months after the operation showed no recurrence of the disease.
Conclusions: A laparoscopic isolated caudate resection for HCC located in the retrocaval portion of the cirrhotic liver seems to be feasible in selected patients and fluorescence imaging and CEIOUS navigation guidance could guarantee a safe and successful surgery.

Abstract Titanium and its based alloys are frequently selected for designing biomedical implants and it is thus necessary to study as detailed as possible their corrosion behavior in biological solutions, such as those in the human body environment. In this paper, with the use of molecular orbital calculation, we designed and developed alloys in the Ti-19Mo-xW system (x = 7, 8, 9, and 10 wt%) and investigated the influence of different contents of tungsten on the behavior of Ti-19Mo-xW alloy samples following corrosion in simulated body fluid (SBF). The values of Bo¯ (bond order) and Md¯ (the metal-orbital energy level) were calculated for each alloy and correlations were established between Bo¯ and the content of tungsten. It was found that with the increase in tungsten content, the value of Bo¯ increases. Regarding the values of the corrosion resistance in SBF that resulted from the investigated alloys, the Ti19Mo7W alloy is distinguished by the lowest value of the corrosion current density and the lowest corrosion rate.

Abstract Properties such as lower melting temperature, good tensile strength, good reliability, and well creep resistance, together with low production cost, make the system Bi-Sn an ideal candidate for fine soldering in applications such as reballing or reflow. The first objective of the work was to determine the thermodynamic quantities of Bi and Sn using the electromotive force measurement method in an electrolytic cell (Gibbs' enthalpies of the mixture, integral molar entropies, and the integral molar excess entropies were determined) at temperatures of 600 K and 903 K. The second objective addressed is the comprehensive characterization of three alloy compositions that were selected and elaborated, namely Bi25Sn75, Bi50Sn50, and Bi75Sn25, and morphological and structural investigations were carried out on them. Optical microscopy and SEM-EDS characterization revealed significant changes in the structure of the elaborated alloys, with all phases being uniformly distributed in the Bi50Sn50 and Bi75Sn25 alloys. These observations were confirmed by XRD and EDP-XRFS analyses. Diffractometric analysis reveals the prevalence of metallic Bi and traces of Sn, the formation of the Sn

Abstract Objectives: Ultrasonographic scanning is currently the most widespread imaging diagnostic procedure. The method provides real-time morphological, vascular and elastographic information in a non-invasive manner. In recent years, harmonic vascular examination has become accessible using intravenous contrast agents. In urological pathology, this procedure is used in the detection and evaluation of vascular and ischemic complications, in the classification of complex cysts according to the Bosniak system, also in the renal lesions with uncertain etiology and in acute pyelonephritis for the detection of abscesses. The contrast agent (SonoVue) is angiospecific and can be used in patients transplanted immediately after surgery without adverse effects or impaired renal function. Thus, it is desirable to be used in the nephrological pathology of the renal graft and to develop diagnostic models based on the evaluation of renal microvascularization, as well as the quantitative data resulting from the graphical representation of the specific parameters. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the current state of the literature regarding the place and role of contrast substance ultrasound in the early diagnosis of acute renal graft dysfunction and to make a differential diagnosis of this pathological entity.
Method: This review quantifies the role of contrast ultrasound in the diagnosis of acute complications of the renal graft. The research was conducted based on the databases PubMed, MedScape, Cochrane, according to the search criteria such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound + kidney transplant, "time intensity curves" + "kidney transplant", filtered for the period 2004-2018.
Results: In the nephrological pathology of the renal graft, contrast-enhanced ultrasound is a valuable tool, superior to Doppler ultrasound in predicting the evolution of the renal graft, identifying very small early defects in renal microvascularization. A number of studies succeeded in identifying acute graft dysfunction, some of which establish its etiology - humoral rejection versus acute tubular necrosis. On the other hand, the contrast-enhanced ultrasound parameters do not have the ability to distinguish between cellular and humoral rejection.
Conclusions: If, at present, the histopathological examination is the only one that can differentiate with certainty the cause of acute renal graft dysfunction, we consider that contrast-enhanced ultrasound, as a non-invasive imaging technique, opens a favorable perspective for increasing the survival of the renal graft and decreasing the complications in the renal transplant. The combination of other ultrasound techniques, together with contrast-enhanced ultrasound, could lead to the development of new diagnostic models.

Abstract Background: Microinvasion (MI), defined as infiltration of the portal or hepatic vein or bile duct and intrahepatic metastasis are accurate indicators of a poor prognosis for mall hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC). A previous study showed that intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) definition of MI-HCC had a high concordance with histological findings. Aim of this study is to evaluate overall survival and recurrence patterns of patients with MI-HCC submitted to hepatic resection (HR) or laparoscopic ablation therapies (LAT).
Methods: A total of 171 consecutive patients (78 h; 93 LAT) with single, small HCC (< 3 cm) with a MI pattern at IOUS examination were compared analyzing overall survival and recurrence patterns using univariate and multivariate analysis and weighting by propensity score.
Results: Overall recurrences were similar in the 2 groups (HR: 51 patients (65%); LAT: 66 patients (71%)). The rate of local tumor progression in the HR group was very low (5 pts; 6%) in comparison to LAT group (22 pts; 24%; p = 0.002). The overall survival curves of HR are significantly better than that of the LAT group (p = 0.0039). On the propensity score Cox model, overall mortality was predicted by the surgical treatment with a Hazard ratio 1.68 (1.08-2.623) (p = 0.022).
Conclusions: If technically feasible and in patients fit for surgery, HR with an adequate tumor margin should be preferred to LAT in patients with MI-HCC at IOUS evaluation, to eradicate MI features near the main nodule, which are relatively frequent even in small HCC (< 3 cm).

Abstract Renal cancer (RC) represents 3% of all cancers, with a 2% annual increase in incidence worldwide, opening the discussion about the need for screening. However, no established screening tool currently exists for RC. To tackle this issue, we assessed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) profiling of serum as a liquid biopsy strategy to detect renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most prevalent histologic subtype of RC. Thus, serum samples were collected from 23 patients with RCC and 27 controls (CTRL) presenting with a benign urological pathology such as lithiasis or benign prostatic hypertrophy. SERS profiling of deproteinized serum yielded SERS band spectra attributed mainly to purine metabolites, which exhibited higher intensities in the RCC group, and Raman bands of carotenoids, which exhibited lower intensities in the RCC group. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the SERS spectra showed a tendency for the unsupervised clustering of the two groups. Next, three machine learning algorithms (random forest, kNN, naïve Bayes) were implemented as supervised classification algorithms for achieving discrimination between the RCC and CTRL groups, yielding an AUC of 0.78 for random forest, 0.78 for kNN, and 0.76 for naïve Bayes (average AUC 0.77 ± 0.01). The present study highlights the potential of SERS liquid biopsy as a diagnostic and screening strategy for RCC. Further studies involving large cohorts and other urologic malignancies as controls are needed to validate the proposed SERS approach.
