Abstract During the month of Ramadan, which falls on the ninth month of the Hijri Calendar, Muslims are obligated to observe religious fasting. The goal of the study was to examine the impact of fasting on various blood parameters, specifically zinc, magnesium, pre-haptoglobin-2, serum copper, total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol levels. In a study, a group of volunteers consisting of 20 men and 10 women agreed to partake in the fast, abstaining from food and drink for approximately 14-15 hours each day. The researchers collected two blood samples from each participant, one before the start of Ramadan fasting and another after 29 days of fasting, serum was separated and analysed for specified parameters. Serum zinc levels showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease after fasting. On the other hand, serum magnesium levels exhibited a significant (p<0.05) increase, Regarding pre-haptoglobin-2, there was a small, insignificant increase observed after 29 days of fasting. However, the study did not identify any significant changes in serum copper, total cholesterol, or HDL-cholesterol levels. Based on these findings, the study concludes that Ramadan fasting may necessitate zinc supplementation or an increase in the consumption of zinc-rich foods. Furthermore, it suggests a decrease in the intake of high-fat foods. These recommendations aim to counteract the observed decrease in serum zinc levels during fasting.

Abstract This study develops a methodology to identify hot spots of critical forage supply in nomadic pastoralist areas, using the Afar Region, Ethiopia, as a special case. It addresses two main problems. First, it makes a spatially explicit assessment of fodder supply and demand extracted from a data poor environment. Fodder supply is assessed by combining rainfall-based production functions and rule-based assessment for prevailing land use. Fodder demand is based on a data consistency check of livestock statistics concerning herd size, composition and geographical distribution. Second, individual herd movements have to be evaluated jointly in concurrent migration patterns to assess local pressures on fodder resources. We, therefore, apply a transition model that relates stock levels to seasonal migration routings for all Afar sub-clans jointly so as to localize the hot spots where feed demand exceeds forage supply. Critical areas come to the fore, especially, near fringes of Highlands and in the southern part of the Afar. A sensitivity test shows that ‘Baseline’ scenario is close to the ‘Best’ but under ‘Worst’, the Afar region would fall into despair. We conclude that the model is a useful tool to inform policy makers on critical areas in the Afar region.

Abstract Background: Childhood malnutrition is a public health issue in developing countries, leading to a double burden of malnutrition, which is associated with both overweight and underweight.
Objective: To assess body weight satisfaction and perception as well as body weight modification experiences, among adolescents from Saudi Arabia.
Method: This study utilized a cross-sectional design targeting adolescents who attempted to modify their body weight. A questionnaire was constructed to measure their demographics, body weight satisfaction and perception, and experience concerning their weight modification attempts. The chi-square test was used to assess the association between the ability to modify weight and maintain the modification according to the ability to set an appropriate weight target based on the age and height of the adolescents, method of weight modification, and receipt of support to modify weight.
Results: A total of 285 adolescents were recruited. More than half of the sample were female (58%); most respondents were secondary school students (73%). Nearly 45% had abnormal body weight where 12.6% were underweight, and 32.3% were overweight or obese. Most of the recruited sample were unsatisfied with their body weight (63%). Although 52% of the adolescents had a normal BMI, only 35% perceived their body weight as normal. Nearly 75% of the sample were able to modify their body weight. However, a smaller proportion were able to maintain the modification they achieved. The most frequently selected body weight modification method was dieting (83%), followed by exercise (69%). Only 40 adolescents (14%) reported consulting a physician regarding their body weight modification attempts. The most frequently reported source of support for weight modification was the family (51%), while the lowest frequency of support was reported concerning schools' contribution (29%). Upon assessing factors associated with the ability to modify weight or maintain the modification, a higher frequency of adolescents who indicated they employed dieting behavior were able to maintain the modification compared to other weight modification practices (
Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of collaboration between families, schools, and healthcare services to improve adolescent body image and ensure the adoption of healthy body weight modification practices among adolescents.

Abstract Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, has been burnt and rebuilt seven times, earning the title of an urban phoenix. Its strategic geolocation in the heart of the Mediterranean gave the country leverage for the economy, by becoming a hotspot for trade through its different ports. Its cultural and religious diversity provided a fertile ground for businesses to grow, most importantly the banking and healthcare sector. The strategic location also put the country in the eye of the storm of different major crises, leaving the small country a crippling state, swamped with political corruption, nepotism, fragile infrastructure, and an overall dysfunctional system. In October 2019, the collapse of the banking system led to a state of hyperinflation in the country, with the financial and economic crisis in Lebanon now ranked in the top 10 most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century. This crisis exposed the extent of corruption and dysfunctionality: a fragmented healthcare sector struggling to protect the vulnerable populations especially cancer patients, a workforce seeking exodus due to challenging work conditions amid a state of hyperinflation, and a fragile infrastructure unable to withstand climate changes in one of the hottest and driest areas on the planet, the Middle East. Despite being caught in this turmoil, Lebanon still managed to update its national climate pledge under the Paris Agreement. However, the financial recovery plan that is aiming to revive the economy and overcome short-term financial challenges, has a risk of affecting long-term climate-proofing efforts. In a multilevel crisis-torn country, it might be difficult to look on the impact of climate change in particular on cancer care, without accounting for the other ongoing troubles. In such circumstances, protecting public health becomes a major challenge yet a priority. The resilience of the system is currently being tested as the crisis evolves, and should be continuously monitored.

Abstract Background: Evidence suggests that some Somali youth who settled in Canada struggle with substance use problems, yet research remains limited in understanding the Somali community's experiences and struggles in supporting their youth affected by substance use.
Objective: This study aims to contribute important knowledge in understanding substance use among Somali Canadian youth and access to treatments in Canada and the transnational cultural healing services available in East Africa.
Methods: Qualitative interviews (n = 37) were conducted in a metropolitan Canadian city and Nairobi, Kenya, from May 2016 to May 2017. In addition, a field study (n = 4) of rehabilitation centers in Kenya was carried out.
Results: Through thematic analysis, five main themes were identified: (i) discrimination and racism in the school environment, (ii) emotional pain and self-medication, (iii) low literacy on substance use and treatment in the Canadian context, (iv) stigma, and (v) dhagan celis (cultural rehabilitation) in transnational setting.
Conclusions: The study provides evidence of the need to address substance use and trauma among refugee youth in the post-resettlement context especially as Canada currently deals with a significant public health crisis in the form of opioid overdose and substance use.
