Abstract Background: Foreign nationals residing in Japan account for approximately 2% of the total population (i.e., approximately 2.6 million people). Of these, 12% are not proficient in speaking Japanese and 25% experience difficulty reading Japanese. Therefore, a simple, convenient, and accurate scale in the native language of foreign nationals is required to support their mental health. In this study, the Public Health Research Foundation Stress Checklist Short Form (PHRF-SCL (SF)) was translated into five languages and the reliability and validity of the translations were confirmed.
Methods: The five translated versions of the PHRF-SCL (SF) have been reverse-translated into the original language, Japanese. The creator confirmed that there were no inconsistencies between the Japanese and reverse-translated versions. A total of 777 adults aged 18-64 years participated in the study. They were asked to complete the native language versions of the PHRF-SCL (SF) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 (DASS 21) online.
Results: An exploratory factor analysis yielded the same four-factor structure as the original. Internal consistency was confirmed by the alpha coefficients of the subscales. Participants were classified into two groups on the basis of the severity classification obtained from each subscale of the DASS 21. Scores of PHRF-SCL (SF) are significantly higher in groups classified as symptomatic by DASS 21, thereby confirming construct validity. Concomitant validity was confirmed based on correlations with the DASS 21.
Conclusions: English, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, and Vietnamese versions of the PHRF-SCL(SF) have been prepared. Although these versions are subject to further statistical analysis, the results were sufficiently substantiated for practical use. This scale is expected to contribute to the promotion of mental health services for people from these countries.

Abstract Purpose: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) may influence the prognosis of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). We assessed the prognostic value of evaluating TILs in the primary and metastatic sites of synchronous CRLM as well as metachronous CRLM.
Methods: We examined 90 patients who underwent curative primary and liver metastasis resection for colorectal cancer. CD8
Results: Fifty-one patients had synchronous CRLM, and 39 patients had metachronous CRLM. In synchronous cases, the overall survival (OS) was significantly worse in patients with low CD8
Conclusions: The immune microenvironment between synchronous and metachronous CRLM might be different, and these differences may affect its prognosis.

Abstract Background: Although patient-risk stratification is important for selecting individualized treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), predicting the oncologic outcomes after surgery remains a challenge. In this study, we identified a nectin family gene panel (NFGP) that can accurately stratify oncologic outcomes in patients with PDAC.
Study design: Comprehensive analysis of the expression of 9 nectin family genes identified the NFGP, which was assessed for predictive performance in 2 independent public cohorts (The Cancer Genome Atlas [TCGA] n = 176; International Cancer Genome Consortium [ICGC] n = 89). It was subsequently trained and validated for the in-house training cohort without neo-adjuvant therapy (NAT, n = 213) and the validation cohort with NAT (n = 307).
Results: Using the Cox regression model, NFGP derived from 9 nectin family genes accurately stratified overall survival (OS) in TCGA (p = 0.038) and ICGC (p = 0.005). We subsequently optimized NFGP, which robustly discriminated postoperative prognosis, OS (p = 0.014) and relapse-free survival ([RFS] p = 0.006) in the training cohort. The NFGP was successfully validated in an independent validation cohort (OS: p < 0.001; RFS: p = 0.004). Multivariate analysis demonstrated the NFGP was an independent prognostic factor for OS and RFS in the training (p = 0.028 and 0.008, respectively) and validation (p < 0.001 and 0.013, respectively) cohorts. The subcohort analyses showed that the predictive performance of NFGP is applicable to the patients' subcohort according to resectability or adjuvant therapy status. Additionally, a combination model of NFGP score and CA19-9 level emerged with improved accuracy for predicting prognosis.
Conclusions: This study established the predictive significance of NFGP for oncologic outcomes after surgery in PDAC. Our data demonstrate its clinical impact as a potent biomarker for optimal patient selection for individualized treatment strategies.

Abstract Introduction: at least 90% of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were expected to know their HIV status by 2020. However, only 84% are aware of their status. This study determined the frequency of HIV testing services visits (HTS) and its related factors to HTS visits among adults in Homa Bay County, Kenya.
Methods: this was a cross-sectional study. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected. A backward stepwise logistic regression analysis was conducted for quantitative data by gender. Qualitative data were thematically categorised into factors of HTS visits by gender.
Results: a total of 645 adults participated in quantitative survey and 17 in qualitative survey. There were no gender differences in the frequency of HTS visits (males=56.3%; females= 58.7%, P=0.785). The frequency of visits was however significantly different between the rural-based (Rachuonyo North=87.5%; Ndhiwa=58.7%) and urban-based (Homa Bay Town=36.8%) facilities at P<0.001. In males, HTS visits were positively associated with ´being in Protestant church´, ´partner´s attitude´, and ´being accompanied by a friend to HTS´. ´Distance to HTS´ was negatively associated with HTS visits in males. For females, 'sexual intercourse in the past 2-5 months´ was positively associated with HTS visits. ´Being in a polygamous marriage´, ´not married´, ´community HIV testing´, and ´affordability of transport cost to HTS centre´ were negatively associated with HTS visits.
Conclusion: there were no gender differences in the frequency of HTS visits. Social position for males and position in the family for females are suggested as the factors influencing HTS visits in Homa Bay County.

Abstract The heterothallic group of the plant pathogen Phytophthora can sexually reproduce between the cross-compatible mating types A1 and A2. The mating hormone α2, produced by A2 mating type and utilized to promote the sexual reproduction of the partner A1 type, is known to be biosynthesized from phytol. In this study, we identified 2 biosynthetic intermediates, 11- and 16-hydroxyphytols (1 and 2), for α2 by administering the synthetic intermediates to an A2-type strain to produce α2 and by administering phytol to A2 strains to detect the intermediates in the mycelia. The results suggest that α2 is biosynthesized by possibly 2 cytochrome P450 oxygenases via 2 hydroxyphytol intermediates (1 and 2) in A2 hyphae and secreted outside.

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effect that social skill deficits had on depression in junior high school girls. Social skills and symptoms of depression were measured in a survey of 775 junior high school girls. About six weeks later, symptoms of depression were measured again, along with occurrence of stressors during the interval. It was found that social skill deficits were significantly associated with depression. A hierarchical regression analysis indicated that after partialling out the influence of first depression scores, social skill scores contributed significantly to the prediction of post-interval depression scores. In addition, we found an interaction effect of social skill and stressor scores on post-interval depression, and girls with social skill deficits became more depressed when they experienced stressors.

Abstract The aim of this nationwide survey was to investigate the use of Kampo medicine by Japanese physicians who worked in the core cancer treatment hospitals which were designated by Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Among the 900 physicians surveyed, 92.4% reported having prescribed Kampo medications, of whom 73.5% reported having prescribed them for cancer patients. Despite this high percentage and the finding that only 9.7% of the physicians reported that they considered Kampo medications to be harmful, only 23.1% of the physicians expressed high expectations of the efficacy of Kampo medicine in tumor suppression and the exertion of immunostimulatory action. In contrast, many cancer patients have expressed the belief that Kampo medications can suppress tumor growth, and several studies have reported that they exert immunostimulatory action. To resolve this discrepancy in patient and physician expectations and to clarify the research findings, further research into the effectiveness and harmfulness of Kampo medicine in cancer treatment is warranted.
